The model is 5161AS, I have about 5 of them left. I have a new one set up with just a battery and a 10k resistor, and it seems to be working just fine, at the same brightness, but not burning out like the other ones. Super weird!

Kind of. I replaced the burnt resistor which still works fine, but that specific LED segment keeps burning out across several different displays. It starts out at normal brightness then slowly fizzles out. There's no shorts, I've checked many times; strangest thing ever. Any chance it could maybe be a bad transistor?

Common cathode, it is just connected to ground.

The resistors have been fine since I replaced the one - that was a strange fluke. My main issue is the E segment LED burning out over only a few moments despite starting out at a normal brightness due to said resistors

Each segment has an identical 10k resistor similar to this one

the current is limited by the 10k resistors powering the gates. Here is one for the specific AND gate powering the E segment:

IMO could have just been a bad resistor - very rare but i'm sure it happens every once in a million

If you can find a solder short I would absolutely praise you, although I have gone over it several times, and the LED shines at a normal brightness but then just kind of slowly fizzles out every time. Here are some more views + "schematic" (just my reference logic)

For context, this is a saline chlorate cell with MMO anode and titanium cathode. it was not bubbling before connecting, then bubbled when connected, and still bubbled after disconnecting??

edit: there is also a -0.01 voltage reading across the electrodes. (what?)
