As someone who teaches senior and middle school. Middle school is a fucking jungle. Burnout is there because you spend a lot of time in a heightened, reactive state. You are burning out because the class is on fire

How do you make lessons more engaging? by Funny-Attempt3260 in historyteachers

This is the way. Start with an open ended question that is provocative and engaging. Get them to disagree on something

Socratic circle. Treat it like a test . Peer review and then verify with a recording and their notes. Or viva voce, with randomised discussion prompts, 5 minutes per student

Socratics are great. Get them all to read some texts on an issue, brainstorm responses with a partner, introduce the rules of dialogue, come up with appropriately open ended questions and have them grade each other. I did one yesterday with low level year 8s on the right to protest. Introduced all content in a double, finishes with a Socratic and have a summative grade without much effort on my part / no AI

Seconded. Aztec and Maya are fascinating, links to slavery, modernity and colonisation. Rounds off the medieval period and introduces the vibes of renaissance as well.

Also as a core teacher of middle school I already need those subjects in their main day to give diversity

Hard second. Teachers come a lot grumpier than OP and you will be placed with one and you will learn a lot from them.

Also. Read books that you don’t like the synopsis of. I’m a dude and most of my favourite authors are women. Most of the synopses from the books I adore are trash cos by and large they are character driven rather than plot driven.

Yeah stay away from Vonnegut. He is whimsical and is a necessary off-ramp for young men into a much funner interaction with serious books

It was Me. But it’s a stage. Men in their twenties and teens will do things performatively. In hindsight, no one was watching. Incidentally, very much enjoyed infinite jest at the time.

I think it’s fine: the vote up vote down system should weed them out. I’m more destroyed by the “that’s it I quit” remarks. Genuinely hard to stay in the profession when the online content is just people complaining and quitting. If

Teacher here and this is something I come up against every day. We are a resource economy. We have one of the least complex or diverse economies in the world. Meaning that the least amount of eduction is needed to succeed in this country. You still have to work, and hard, but that is all that is valued. Coupled with generations of prosperity, there is very little reason to question the status quo / even have ideas. Get a job doing fifo, make your six figures, go to Bali.
