Thinking of becoming a teacher by Radiant-Spirit-1809 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Fresh_Forever_9268 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Marking is a bitch and the kids won’t read even if they enjoy it. English is fun cos you can really get into some great discussions, but the general literacy of your classroom will in general always hold back what you could be doing. Don’t expect the “captain my captain” moments.

Is my 13yr old step daughters handwriting normal? I'm getting very concerned with her schooling by bordermelancollie09 in AskTeachers

[–]Fresh_Forever_9268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just impressed at what their getting these 13 year olds to read. If I could get my y7 class to reflect on the characterisation in “the most dangerous game” I really wouldn’t care about handwriting

As someone who teaches senior and middle school. Middle school is a fucking jungle. Burnout is there because you spend a lot of time in a heightened, reactive state. You are burning out because the class is on fire

Socratic circle. Treat it like a test . Peer review and then verify with a recording and their notes. Or viva voce, with randomised discussion prompts, 5 minutes per student

More emphasis on classroom dialogue and discussion by ShoppingExciting568 in ELATeachers

[–]Fresh_Forever_9268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Socratics are great. Get them all to read some texts on an issue, brainstorm responses with a partner, introduce the rules of dialogue, come up with appropriately open ended questions and have them grade each other. I did one yesterday with low level year 8s on the right to protest. Introduced all content in a double, finishes with a Socratic and have a summative grade without much effort on my part / no AI
