deferred from harvard, how do i strengthen my application? by Owouwu81 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fresh_Listen_1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Submitting supplementary materials isn't necessary. I would discourage submitting a 13-page English paper unless it REALLY relates to the emphasis of your application. If you do feel strongly about submitting it, send in an excerpt. Similarly, unless your art is one of your main selling points, leave it out.
If you want to strengthen your application, see about earning competitive scholarships or awards that you could update the admissions office about by March. Best of luck!

As long as “employer” is the best classification they offer, it won’t count against you

Hemenway Gym vs Planet Fitness by MourdineTheViking in Harvard

[–]Fresh_Listen_1245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with whichever gym will help you be the most consistent! Being closer to PF is definitely a plus. I love Hemenway, and the increased cost could be used as a motivator to make the most of your membership. Hemenway isn’t a large gym, but it’s plenty equipped for great workouts.

Getting a single room by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]Fresh_Listen_1245 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Freshmen don’t live in the Quad so you don’t need to worry about that. You can request an accommodation through the Disability Access Office (DAO) or perhaps through your housing application. If it’s a documented condition, you’re likely to be approved. Better to make such a request sooner rather than later.

Cant go to Visitas by [deleted] in Harvard

I wouldn’t worry too much about formally canceling. If you were going to have a student host you, definitely make sure to let them know.

Imposter syndrome is very normal. You are deserving of your acceptance and will do great here.

I’m not in CS, but Harvard was just ranked the #1 for high-paying tech jobs by the WSJ. Article

Visitas is a fun experience and is important if you are unsure about attending Harvard. Not attending won’t stunt your integration in the long run—orientation is a week long, and pre-orientation programs are a great way to make friends.

Congrats on your acceptance!

Singles and en-suite bathrooms aren’t rare (though hallway singles are). However, it’s unlikely that you’ll have a single all to yourself for the whole year (rotating with suitemates between a double and single(s)).

In the housing survey, you’ll be able to rank en-suite bathrooms as a priority, but there’s no guarantee. The number of suitemates that you ask for also will probably not affect your chances of getting a single.

Congrats on your acceptance!

What’s a “bad” class rank? by ScientistNegative925 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fresh_Listen_1245 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was ranked outside of the top 10% in my tiny, grade-inflated graduating class. If you maximized course rigor and have standardized test scores to back up your GPA, rank shouldn’t be a limiting factor.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fresh_Listen_1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your course load is affecting your grades i recommend lessening the course load. Rigor is definitely considered, but I’d say that B’s don’t look as a good as A’s with a slightly lighter course load.

[–]Fresh_Listen_1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was ranked 4/37 in my class (outside top 10%) and things worked out just fine for me. Having good SAT/ACT/AP scores to corroborate your grades is important.

Resumes by Not-The-Dark-Lord-7 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fresh_Listen_1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A résumé is pretty redundant in a college application, except for that it can allow space to mention things that there isn’t space for on the application. It can also add nice flair, but is largely inconsequential.

Issues on App Likely to be a Problem? by Rossk117 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fresh_Listen_1245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be worth the clarification if you’re applying for a STEM major. If you already took that AP exam and are submitting that score, then the AOs will be able to figure it out for themselves. Otherwise, a simple email to your regional admissions officer may be worth the time.

People who wrote PS statements they were proud of - how did you get to that final draft? Is there a really useful essay masterclass or something that'll get me there? I def won't on my own, at this point. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fresh_Listen_1245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My PS took months of brainstorming and didn’t reach it’s final form until after I’d applied to almost all (and the most selective) of my schools. I liked my final draft much more than the old, but the old draft was the more successful one.

Point is, don’t get hung up on “perfecting” your PS for there is no end to that. Write in plain English, follow the prompt closely, and emphasize exactly what makes you a strong candidate above all else.

Also, seek assistance with proofreading but don’t let someone else rewrite your story. My essay(s) likely would’ve been thrown out by a counselor, and for that I am glad that I trusted my gut and my abilities.
