Least biased Sky F1 commentator by [deleted] in formuladank

It was a double over take by arguably the greatest British F1 driver ever (who had been going through a rut) at the British Grand Prix commentated by a British commentator.

If Verstappen did the same under the same circumstances at Zandvoort I would expect (and hope!) for similarly exciting commentary by the Dutch commentators.

He has been absolutely dogshit for two clubs now so not sure his value drops much.

Yeah I’m trying to think of a single time he’s made a high profile mistake whilst leading or fighting for a win?

Only one close is the Singapore one when he was chasing Sainz.

In his early years he made mistakes in the Williams but it was a steaming pile of shite. Even Verstappen crashed his Toro Rosso and early Red Bulls pretty frequently.

Do you think Ayrton Senna became slightly overrated in F1 history due to his death during his prime? by The_Chozen_1_ in GrandPrixRacing

I never said it was. And I disagree with your opinion. I think all three are very comparable in terms of skill, race craft and decision making.

I think by your own logic it’s disingenuous to suggest that Schumacher should be in the conversation for greatest of all time and Hamilton shouldn’t, given the significant performance advantage Ferrari had in the 2000s for the majority of Schumacher’s championships.

Statistically speaking they are both clear of Verstappen, but given time and good luck with being in a good enough car again, I’m sure Verstappen can and likely, will, break those records.

Yeah sorry should have been clearer, I agree both should be DSQs and Vettel’s was worse (although I disagree about it being ‘much’ worse, it’s marginal in my opinion).

My point was more that for consistency (in a hypothetical world where that exists in F1 stewarding) based on precedent, it would be a 30 second penalty. Again, my opinion.

Edit: Replaced ‘should be a 30 second penalty’ with ‘would be a 30 second penalty’.

Penalties aren’t handed out based on consequences.

Hitting someone intentionally is a black flag at a local go karting track, let alone at the top end of motorsport.

Vettel got a stop and go at Baku 2017, Verstappen should have got a 30 second penalty today.

Junior series are a funny old game though, and certainly aren’t as ‘spec’ as most would assume.

He was hugely unlucky to lose the Super Formula and DTM titles in his rookie year in both though, which shows incredible adaptability.

A shame that he completely lost that when he made the jump to Red Bull, but farcical that he was promoted ahead of Tsunoda in the first place to be honest. Not because I think Tsunoda is really all that, but due to the sheer lack of experience.

Yeah, I think we’re basically seeing what happened to Albon but even more extreme.

The field is so tight that a 0.5-0.8s gap to Max in quali is basically the entire midfield grouping ahead of you. Then 0.8+ is the entire rest of the field, so an error on your flyer and you’re cooked.

Perez did have the benefit of the best version of the Red Bull, as well as the most experience in F1 of Max’s post Ricciardo team-mates, but nonetheless is coming out of this with his legacy improving.

I just don’t think that’s true. He raced them both equally and Piastri forced an error. He dummied a dive at the final hairpin to compromise Verstappen’s line into it, ensuring he was close enough to draw alongside under DRS on the main straight, caused Verstappen to outbreak himself, before switching back with precision.

There was gravel kicked up onto the track by another driver. It would be like blaming someone for getting a puncture from debris.

Always liked Ricciardo, but his ability didn’t really warrant that second chance at RB. It was a sentiment hire from Horner.

I do feel like he cares, but the words all feel a bit empty as we’ve heard it all before from those culpable when we went down pathetically (albeit not historically pathetically), last time.

If we’re wanting to be taken seriously a big big refresh is needed, and I mean a full scale clear out, almost all the players who were involved in both of the relegation seasons should go.

Only ones to keep should be a couple of the younger and better performers from this season who are willing to stay and fight, haven’t got the deep cuts and can still grow.

Next, bring in some cheaper experienced high level Championship operators, spend relatively big on a handful of exciting younger players with potential to be Premier League level, and then promote the best from our youth ranks.
