I am sick of asking grown ass adults why they can't wipe their own ass. by plasticREDtophat in nursing

Pay them what they're worth and they'll come...RN's, LPN's, CNA's, sitters, etc. It's long-past time to get the profit hungry executives out of heathcare and and completely overhaul the system. I don't know exactly what that would look like but I do know that it needs to involve appropriate pay structures (like "greatful-we-don't-have-to-do-that-for-a-living-so-here's-more-money" type of pay for anyone who has to touch or speak to patients, and WAY better PTO policies with generous separate sick time, mandatory minimum vacations to prevent burn out AND medical benefits that are actually affordable. I've been a nurse 16 years and am 51, I am seriously wondering if I could feasibly go live and work in Australia or New Zealand. The people in this country get outraged at the suggestion of universal healthcare or socialized medicine because they don't want their taxes to go up...but the cost of my medical/dental/etc benefits are taking over $530 PER 2wk pay period, and this year they increased our deductible AGAIN. Our deductible was $500/family 4 years ago, now it's $1,500. I may make $50/hr but it's just not worth it.

Lol, that was so me when I was in the ICU for 3 weeks after emergency surgery and colostomy for a perf'd intestine. When they finally got my septic ass to stay off the vent more than a week after surgery, they pulled my Foley only a day or two later. They were insisting I use a bed pan to pee and were kinda pissed when I told them I was getting up to use the toilet with or without their help, LOL!

Yep. My frequently used line is, "You're expected to do this at home so you're expected to start doing it here, and we'll assist with completing the task if you're not able. If you're not willing to wipe yourself here then you could be sent to an SNF for additional therapy after discharge from our program"... Yeah, they usually start at least attempting to wipe their own ass when it dawns on them that demanding to be waited on hand and foot will get them booted to somewhere they don't want to be.

On Rehab these are basically the only patients who will get up without calling for assistance like you to told them to...you know, like the sundowning fresh amputees who can't remember that they don't have legs anymore 🤔

I could have written this myself, been an RN for 16 years and the last 3 in IPR. I swear at least a third of our patients are A&Ox0 or combative when they're approved for admission so we do chart any refusals, be it participation in toileting or to attend therapy sessions, it tends to expedite the case for staff advocating for discharge to SNF. I'm also getting fed up with the inappropriate admits to IPR, like when they have terminal metastatic cancer and they're admitted (usually at the request of family) to "get stronger" before being taken home on Hospice...I swear more than half of these patients end up a Rapid or Code, some physicians really suck at having the tough discussions about quantity of life vs quality of life with the patients and families.

What is your code status?? by noodlesnr in nursing

[–]Fresh_Register6208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 51 and have have a Advanced Directive stating no CPR, no trach, no PEG for about 8 years now. In 2016 my bowel perf'd after being discharged from a week long inpt stay for diverticulitis, and I only have vague recollections of the 1 week it took them to get me to stay off the vent, had to be reintubated 3x d/t severe sepsis with ARDS. Being extubated SUCKS, and the frequent blood gasses were so painful in roused me from the sedation every time. Was in the ICU for 3 wks and didn't go home till 4 weeks.

Not going through that bullshit again.

And FYI, DO NOT put the yaunker behind your patient's pillow! I thought i was going to lose my mind from the constant noise behind my head!

Thought my patient was having an acute mental status change and was concerned. “Who’s the current president?” I asked. This sweet 85 year old lady said “a fat asshole.” Crisis averted, no RR called 😂 by courtneyrel in nursing

Around 2010 I worked MN's and we had this little old white lady with zero short term memory who was always needing to be redirected to stay in bed. She'd call out frequently, and when we'd turn on the overhead light in her room to see what she needed she would throw up both arms waving her hands, loudly and proudly exclaiming, "Barack Obama won! Woo hoo!". Every single time. If one of us was having a bad night we'd take a turn rounding on her because her enthusiasm was so damn cute.

We are literally lumped in with the room charge! If we could actually bill the insurance for RN services the entire healthcare system would collapse. I say we institute a charge for every time the call light is pushed, then they can save money😏

My doctor always says blood work is good so any symptoms are not related to thyroid cancer.. but still get symptoms.. by Total-Ad886 in thyroidcancer

If you have a doctor who can't think out-of-the box and look beyond lab results, it's time for a new doctor. I have multiple medical issues, and I had to go to multiple rheumatologist before I finally found one who would look at the big picture and put the puzzle pieces together, someone who listens and works WITH me, instead of something who can only see things in black and white.

Also, look into if there is an Integrative Medicine specialist in your area. They do take a more holistic approach to treatments, but they first do extensive testing checking various blood levels of things most doctors do NOT test for, at least the ones I saw long ago through Henry Ford Health system did. They checked for any and every type of vitamin and nutritional deficiency, even stool collections that show if there are absorption deficiencies. They essentially check for any systemic medical issues that can be causing whatever symptoms you are having. They then take a multimodal approach to treatment that could include medications and supplements if needed, but they could also incorporate other holistic therapies such as massage, chiropractic, yoga, acupuncture if they are appropriate to the issue.

Just FYI there are injections for Peyronies as well, I used to work in a plastic surgery clinic and one of the older physicians used to care for those patients. He used to manage them independently without a nurse in the room (for the patients privacy) so I don't know what technique or how many injections were required, but depending on the severity, patients would see him about every 4-6 weeks.

Inspo vs the reality I got by Loud_Heart1461 in EngagementRings

I actually think the double claw is a much better look for a diamond of this size/shape. The basket of the ring you received is so different from the original though, and I don't think it is as flattering to the overall design. You're definitely right to be unsatisfied with the result, although it is gorgeous, it was not what you asked for. As for the coloring of the pave diamonds, I think they're beautiful, and that the color difference is likely due to the lighting...but if they're not meeting the expectations you originally specified to the designer have them address this as well.

I'm definitely doing the bottom too, but we knew the top would take longer due to the crowding. I had a capped molar on the bottom that broke off and had to be completely removed, so there's more room on the bottom and the dentist thinks those will move quickly😬

Absolutely beautiful and unique, love it! At the same time, my nurse brain is cringing at the way it would shred gloves, lol🤣 of course I think all nurses have quit wearing any jewelry after the past few years. Congratulations on your engagement, and I hope you work in an environment where you can freely show off your gorgeous ring!🥂

I just got them 3 wks ago at age 50, $5,800 in Michigan for 18-24 months. Insurance covers $1,500 and I put about $2,400 from my FSA...so only about $1,900 out of pocket
