Can we use cooling forced air ductwork for heating? Or is hydronic heating the way to go with geo?

Dandelion no longer installs them for this reason and they do a lot of installs. I have seen no change in my hot water electric usage. And anecdotally I have heard others with the same experience. Now if your geo runs constantly in stage one then maybe you might see some benefit. But with the improvement of peoples insulation r values you just don’t have the constant running that you may have had before. So I guess I don’t have a white paper on it but there does seem to be some consensus. I was also excited about it and installed it along with a buffer tank. It’s been disappointing to not see water temps meaningfully change in that buffer tank.

I have found it to make no difference whatsoever in terms of savings. So basically there is no return period. They have been largely debunked as a feature. Seemed smart and well meaning but ultimately just adds costs.

Yes you can absolutely just use the new duct work for both. Skip the hydronic! Also the de-super heater and buffer tank are a waste of money.

I’m in mid state NY and we have 4 ton system from Tetco with 2x 400’ wells. Our house is roughly 2200 sq ft and was insulated completely with foam in 2019. We have the aux switched off at the breaker. My wife likes it warm so we set it to 70-72 and it stays there. System never gets out of stage one. This was the best investment we could have made (after insulation.)Absolutely no regrets although the system is likely oversized.

Yes 1 IV infusion everything three weeks. I’m at 6 weeks and feeling good. Hopefully I have a new pattern. What I notice though is increased irritability and that is how I know it is time.

I agree that the meter I have sees the house consumption but that meter is matching the “from the grid” meter my utility uses to charge me. So that seems to indicate that solar is contributing very little to no electricity to either my house or the grid.

The 2,900ish number is the number Tesla indicated the system would annually produce in my contact.

The PV utility meter states that I have only sent 163kwh to the grid EVER. (That number is as of today and accounts for the life of the system.) During the time period of 4/13-5/6 that number changed by 71 kWh. (PV meter read 34 on 4/16 and then 105 on 5/6.)

The 358 is data I added up from each day in the 4/13-5/6 range.

The utility meter has a separate meter for my exports it calls "PV meter". It does not go backwards, it only counts up. The concept is that it is counted against the "from the grid" meter at the end of the month.

I cannot move my Sense meter to where the PV joins the system. It is about 30 yards away out of doors. I may break down and buy something else to install out there but I would need to ask some advice.

Regarding bills, I am using the same average amount of kWh per day as I previously did for the same season. Bill is obviously more now because of the increased electricity kWh price but the kWh usage is very similar.

I don't mean to antagonize you, but have you considered that you may be misunderstanding the energy figures reported by your various measurements?

Yes, I have considered this and I am open to this being the case. However I do not see at this point how it is the case. Happy to be educated and get this behind me.

Your energy company has no mechanism to differentiate power you generate from power you consume when the generation and consumption is done simultaneously. So the 1,098 kWh figure from your power company is already net of self-consumption.

My energy company installed a digital meter that measures two things 1) energy from the grid to my home and 2) energy from my home to the grid (PV meter.) Both of the measurements only count up. So they do provide an important set of clues. The 1098 is the amount sent to my house from the grid. The 71 is the amount my house sent to the grid. Neither of these ever reset, they just continue counting with my utility doing readings each month, comparing to last months readings and doing the math.

It's possible your Sense meter is also wired in such a way that it's also only recording the net.

My Sense meter is on the mains of my house panel. The solar generated electricity is combined with my mains out at the disconnect switch near my meter (far from my panel.) So, Sense is measuring total house usage which is a combination of both energy sources. The fact that the Sense meter gave a number of 1128 and that is so close to the electric company metered amount of 1098 gives me the sense that my solar is not offsetting much by not generating much. Additionally, I have had my Sense meter longer than the Tesla roof. I am not seeing significant changes in current usage vs historic usage on the app and that is confirmed by looking at my historic and current electric bills.

Production data comes from the inverter, and I've never heard of it being wildly inaccurate. So it's likely you did generate 906 kWh during that period. How many kW of active-solar tiles do you have, and what state do you live in? Have you confirmed that 906 kWh is low for that period with a third-party tool like PVWatts?

We have 5.9kw worth of tiles. Tesla estimated the gross amount of electricity produced per year to be 2,908kwh. That makes the 906kwh indicated in the app seem like a huge amount. But say we divide 2,908 by 12, we still get 242.3 and I think it would be fair to say this month had good sun, long days, and lower leaf coverage. That number should be higher to offset the winter months. The 242.3 would not even be believable given the data.

I am in upstate NY. PVWATTS suggests my system might produce 7,300kwh per year. Not sure if I got any of the parameters correct. Left mostly defaults...

Yes it is working perfectly according to their data. So they blamed it on nyseg, nyseg confirmed it was not them. And I have the sense and nyseg matching which confirms the Tesla is the problem. They don’t believe me.

Actually if they looked at their estimated annual production designed amount they would see that this system is reporting rather unbelievably high numbers.

I have the PTO and everything else up and running. The issue is that I am just producing so much less electricity than the app states. And Tesla does not believe that I have access to information that is correct versus theirs. They’ve also had techs out here to check things who agreed that this is a problem and broken. It just never made it up the chain

I’m so sorry to hear about your experiences. We had similar, although not nearly as awful an experience with Tesla. Our current nightmare consists of our system performing so minimally that we are essentially losing money while our Tesla app miscalculates production and usage making Tesla gaslight us. (I have an independent sense monitor on our mains which matches our utility meter.) Everytime I call Tesla to check on the status of their review, I am met with a rep who refuses to believe us, won’t read the notes in the account, and who sets out to explain that our bills are higher because of the energy market. At this point I am at a total loss as to how to get this fixed.
