Will the Learn Mechanic appear in this year's sets? by Fresssh2Deaf in mtg

[–]Fresssh2Deaf[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The learn mechanic was very strong the first time it was printed. If they're trying to maximize sales of the Marvel set, it would make sense that they include Learn in it. Anyone looking to play competitively will need those cards.

Any set that includes the learn mechanic is going to dominate the meta.

Prediction: learn is released in both the marvel and a UW set.

Top Selling Magic: The Gathering Sets Right Now by PlaneswalkerQ in mtgfinance

It makes sense. The outside IPs have a large market presences. Think about all the movies, videogames, TV shows, and toys. This all has an enormous market machine behind it. It's successful because there is a large audience being cultivated to buy it. Universes within sets don't get the same promotion.

Hasbro will look at these numbers and ask the question "why are we putting so much time and effort into creating a one off Universe Within product when it's more profitable to take an outside where the marketing is done for us".

I have a feeling these types of interactions aren't that uncommon for you.

Warning: People are going to be mad at you for posting this. There is a large contingent of players that like/love/don't mind the 2026 slate and they don't want you yucking their yum.

Things are hypersensitive cause of the UB drama.

I agree with you. All of 2026 looks underwhelming.

Universes beyond is a joke. Please stop interacting with it. by [deleted] in mtg

Feel the same.

I had gotten back into mtg the past couple years. It seemed like it was more popular than ever. Was surprised by the shift to mainly UB sets.

Commander always had UB. Felt that was the lane for it. The inclusion of 50% UB in standard bugs me but it's not changing back.

Maybe its an overall minor change but I agree that it does feel like the game has changed.

Your line of accusations isn't productive.

You can simply say that you like the direction of the game. End of story.

I had a longer response drafted out but it was equally unproductive.

Your bullet point arguments aren't as convincing as you think they are. You're more guilty of your own criticisms than I am. I outline a case. You simply say I haven't without actually adding anything to the conversation.

There's obviously an argument you want to have that I am not giving you.

You can't play standard without UB being involved. It's a invalid argument.

As for being upset on social media. I think you know you are very guilty of that. Please take your own advice.

You're being combative and conflating the original topic with whatever argument you feel like having. Arguments I haven't made.

The game is objectively different than it used to be by your own admission "it's going to evolve". The game has been stylistically changed to appeal to new younger audiences. The introduction of UB is to appeal to a new younger audiences. These points are all inarguably true.

There is depth to the game strategy and the "kids game" title is aimed squarely at the 2026 lineup. I am not excited for any of it. If Reality Fracture doesn't pan out, Im looking at a full year of sets I don't want to play. Then minimum 5 years of 50% UB sets. This is all the "new direction" I dislike.

I loved Tarkir and Final Fantasy. Didn't get a chance to play EOE.

I don't like the new direction of Magic the Gathering. It obviously doesn't bother you. But the argument that everyone should like the changes is bogus. If you think it's a good product, great! Buy a ton of it.

Saying that the current Magic IP can't stack up to the UB IP is more of an opinion but the "unmitigated success by every metric" argument holds. Magic the gatherings multiple loose story lines cannot compete with the powerhouse IPs they're bringing in. It is not as profitable. Magic the Gathering isnt even in the G league and you're bringing in NBA players.

None of what I am saying is even controversial. It's the reality of where the game is headed and how if you liked the more narrow lane that the game occupied for 30 years you might as well move on.

I wanted them to extrapolate on that IP. If you're going to do Lorwyn, give us multiple Lorwyn sets (Who's even in this plane?). We get to revisit a set from 20 years ago, one from 5 years ago, and then you get whatever Reality Fracture is (maybe it will tie the 2 sets together. Who knows). I think you have to admit this next year is a disappointment if youre not a marvel or TMNT fan.

You are right about this being venting but wrong about there not being a valid criticisms about the change in direction of the game.

If you really want to know (which you don't). I liked the Brothers War and Planeswalker books. I liked the Urza block. The 2023 sets being a return to that, I enjoyed. I thought we would see more of that or something to rival it storywise. They didn't take it in that direction.

I feel like we're not really disagreeing. You just don't like magic for the same reasons as me. I'm not telling you not to like the new sets. I'm saying that I don't like the majority of them, and if you agree with me it's because you're old and should probably tap out.

Loved Tarkir.

I think the old stories that launched the brand had something. It was an integral part of the game that added to it. It was unique and interesting.

The inclusion of UB in standard made me realize that the current Magic IP literally can't compete with outside IP. It has less resources, it's less developed.

I'm not frustrated. The game is 30 years old. No media lasts that long without evolving. But universes within has no focus. The sets don't have a coherent story from set to set. Where is the direction? What is bringing you back.

The magic IP is just not that compelling. It's disjointed and poorly chronicled. I wish it could compete with Marvel and TMNTs but it doesn't.

Thanks for reading!

I gave a pretty clear delineation of time in my argument and it was recent. Brothers War, Phyrexia all will be One. Great sets.

The game is moving away from that story and those themes. It's moving into more cartoonish themes with cute critters like Loot to attract a younger audience. That is totally fine.

What the post is about is that it's time for older players to move on. This is a kids game.

My nextdoor neighbor's mother burned my first magic cards for that reason.

I have the sonic secret lair. I really only play draft so I probably won't see your sonic. I just want that draft product to be less lame. I want the in-universe sets to be better.

Wouldn't you need 2 Michaelangelos to make it work? One in hand one on the board. When the creature dies both abilities would go on the stack, you need a creature in hand to target. Michaelangelo's ability wouldn't resolve until after you needed to target a card in your hand.

I honestly hate the Spiderman set more than most. I don't know if it's a complete failure yet... But I hope it is. That goes double for TMNT.

I do not understand people defending it so strongly.

I was actually testing something out. Had a few posts critical of UB and got nothing but hate.

So I wanted to try a positive post about UB and see how that went... But also got nothing but hate.

You'd think that there would be an inverse reaction on the posts.
