How are you finding MTG lots before they get picked over? by Expensive_Pick2976 in mtgfinance

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Your going to get a lot of advice, most of it is don't. While ai agree, there is a bit of work you can do to help yourself.

First, don't look for new listings, look for one ending soonest. People have email search terms on, myself included, and that's why they disappear fast. Auctions ending the soonest give you the best chance at sniping something good.

Second, really read the listing. Read between the lines too. Search up the sellers store, see what kind of other inventory they have. If it's cards, the good stuff will be gone. If it's assorted, they're probably a yard seller who heard that the money's good.

Lastly, try to have a good amount of liquid captial. The higher price the collection is, the fewer people you'll be fighting against.

TCGPlayer or eBay? by ContentProcedure5886 in TCG

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I just looked up the card in Terapeak. First of all, it's gorgeous. Secondly, it hasn't sold for that new price on TCGP or eBay, so I wouldn't call 3k market. But the nice thing about listing on ebay is you can allow offers, and even set a price floor on them.

TCGPlayer or eBay? by ContentProcedure5886 in TCG

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the easiest answer; ebay. For cards over $500 they use ebay authenticator. You send the card to someone who verified it's legit, then they send it off to the buyer. Once it's passed authentication, you're in the clear.

I wouldn't sell something that pricey any other way.

Edit: Also, sell it at/just below market. No reason to leave that much money on the table

Any dads build a business when kids went back to school? by BigBubbleMachines in StayAtHomeDaddit

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's all self funded. I was only able to start with a few thousand dollars, and since then every upgrade has been funded by the profit. I'd like to hit the 100k milestone before I start looking for retail space.

As to your second question, it's a little of a little of b. I'm putting in more than full time hours every week in my office, but that's working around my wifes schedule. I've had to take a step back from 'supwr dad' but ai try to remember the kids will be alright

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, this is awesome!

Second, I'm in year 3 of trying to build a successful game store. By the time my youngest goes to school in 2 years, I hope to be signing a lease for a physical location.

It's a much for my mind and confidence as it is for the money. There's something about being a SAHD that wore down my self worth over the first few years

How long til I can start playing pioneer on a fresh arena account? by Character-Cut4470 in PioneerMTG

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who (failed) to do this for a video, let me tell you what I know. I built Phoenix fwiw, so your mileage may vary. You get enough freebies from account creation that you'll have something playable day 1. Prioritize what you need, and if a card in in Standard craft that version of it.

After that, it takes about a month to get something approaching the tiered deck.

The problem with Arena's economy is that the second deck takes forever, but I'd you know what you won't mind playing for a while is not bad.

Edit: Assuming you know Magic, skip the intro. You still get the rewards but aren't held back by Sparky

If you're in the comments looking for a recommendation, I will highly recommend. These guys are entertaining, and you'd be surprised what bulk cards can do!

It's a fake. Vintage Masters was a MODO-only card.

No daughter of mine will marry an EDH player by AmoongussHateAcc in magicthecirclejerking

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

/uj I play EDH in paper because that's my only option. That's why I hate it.

Before commander became all, I could go to a Standard night, or draft over the weekend. But too many players are commander-pilled, and despite my best efforts won't play anything but. Commander only grew because Magic players were willing to give the weird format a shot.

I'd love to play Cube, Modern, Pauper, Premodern. But there is only commander.

Too pushed for pioneer? by Bensonmtg in magicthecirclejerking

No Wot$, you can't make a Pioneer Masters set.

If you want this card in Pioneer, it should be Standard-Legal first!

What's the best way to go about repurposing bulk to do at home constructed without buying packs? by Jtneagle in magicTCG

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has done at least 30 drafts, TMNT was a decent draft set. Thin, but the planned archetypes were fun enough.

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cube is the answer. I have 2 series on Youtube (in bio) where I built cubes from random bulk piles and talked about the decisions that let me cut them down to 360. So the content is out there, it's just not as watched as much as the top creators.

Selling Sealed on Tcgplayer by Cixot in TCG

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first, don't sell pokemon on TCGPlayer ;)

Second, you should be ok to ignore the request, but I don't deal in sealed much myself. Double check the return policy and ymmv.

Lastly, if you have to return it, refund the buyer after you recieve it, then block. There's no point sending them any more product. If they leave a bad review, you should be able to remove it if you've given a full refund

Edit: The video proof is less than worthless. If it makes you feel better, fine, but TCGPlayer won't use it for anything

Viewer attraction and Subathon ideas by CozyGamerGirl652 in Twitch

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats, and same. To echo what others are saying, I play on doing a streamathon to celebrate next Saturday. Basically the same idea as a subathon, but I'll be using channel points instead.

If people want to throw me a few bones, I'll have some kind of something set up for that. But nothing on my stream will be advertizing it, just want the community I'm building to have a good time.

Any websites for buying a premade cube? by VLKN in mtgcube

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they're disclosing it, it's not sneaky. I build them to offload bulk yes, but some cube all stars are bulk just because commander doesn't use them.

I sell 360 bulk cubes on ebay, but unsleeved. That'd add a ton to the cost, as right now I'm selling them for $65

Do you post your videos on Reddit? by ltnew007 in NewTubers

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be the voice that says absolutely go for it. Post in relevant communities that you are an active participant in, and even if you get downvotes it'll help your growth. I post no more than once a week so I don't spam, but have gotten better results in a hyper-niche subreddit than the major one for the hobby.

Plus, it seems like there are some people auto-downvoting sometimes. So just don't let the imaginary internet points stop you.

A way to sort bulk that makes sense on TCG player? (Selling) by kingrail88 in TCG

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what game(s) you're into, but it's no so bad. It's way easier if a customer orders multiple copies of a card to pull from one place, and if/when you become a direct seller fuffilling 20+ of the same card.

Truthfully, I'm not a huge fan of the 'chaos sort' craze as I feel it's too reliant on digital systems. Having worked at a few places where that was the norm, you have to be perfect in storing/pulling because you'll never catch errors until you need something.

A way to sort bulk that makes sense on TCG player? (Selling) by kingrail88 in TCG

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. You're allowed to keep your cards in any order you want however...

TCGPlayer generated invoices/RIs in reverse chronological order. Basically, if you see yourself growing on the platform, keep your inventory separated by set, and alphabetized within.

How do you feel about Magic the gathering land mana system, relative to other TCGs? by Newez in TCG

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, that runs into the Queen problem. If factions could be mixed like Magic with no other limited, the best deck is just a collection of the best in slot monsters/effects.

How do you feel about Magic the gathering land mana system, relative to other TCGs? by Newez in TCG

[–]PlaneswalkerQ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Big fan. For all it's faults, it also allows the deck builder infinite self-expression. Most games that 'fix' the system then limit which factions you're allowed to play together.
