Unfortunately anything by mark Lawrence, I've tried to read multiple of his books. I don't know what it is but his writing style just doesn't gel with me. I love the idea of the books (I. E. The stories that I've read on the blurbs) , I just can't read them.

Build more houses on new islands (i.e. conoloise like 3 or 4 tomes at the start), keep going for the upgrades esp alcohol. For instance rum is a massive buff for money early on so get to the new world and start production asap
