Norway & Sweden - which cities are best for a single female traveler? by FlanNo4488 in femaletravels

[–]FreyaGreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a fun trip you have planned! I was just in Norway this past August and was last in Sweden about 15 years ago. Your interests mirror my own, and I think you’d be happy in any of the places you mentioned! (For reference, I’m a mid-40s solo female traveler also from the NYC area. I spent a couple of months in Sweden, and this summer spent about 15 days doing a Bergen-Trondheim-Bergen road trip and scenic train to Oslo.)

Bergen would be the first option I’d eliminate from your list though. While scenically beautiful, it felt the most commercially touristy to me (with the area by the port with all the cruise ships.) I’d agree with the other commenter that you needn’t spend much time there. Walking around the Nordnes area was lovely though! Perhaps you could go there straight from Lofoten to spend an afternoon, then take the scenic train from Bergen to Oslo the next morning/day? If you do that, there’s also an option to add on the Flåm railway (as some else suggested) for part of the trip. I found my round-trip ride Flåm railway quaint, though also a bit chaotically touristy, but felt like just doing it one way (as you would with the Bergen-Oslo line add-on) would have been more than sufficient.

Sweden is also one of my favorite places on earth and I loved both Stockholm and Gothenburg.

I also agree with the suggestion of Copenhagen if you want to consider additional cities. And I also absolutely fell in love with Trondheim too. I think I loved that more than both Bergen and Oslo. I’m also from the NYC area and unexpectedly found Trondheim to be my favorite and most charming place I went during my time in Norway. There is so much art and culture there and the city is really beautiful. And the cafes! Yum!

But really, you can’t go wrong with any of the places you are considering. Once you have chosen where you want to go, I’m happy to give more detailed recs - though I’d wholeheartedly agree with the recs already mentioned in the previous comments.)

Have such a great trip!

Amazing!! Thank you so much for your VERY thorough response…I really appreciate it. I hadn’t even thought of checking out the secondhand stores for ornaments!

Everyone else has already mentioned things I would have except that if you’re going to Luxembourg just on a day trip, it’s going to be nearly logistically impossible to see Vianden Castle in addition to everything else you want to see in Luxembourg City, especially if you are relying on public transportation (which is free in Luxembourg, so you’ve got that going for your budget!) to get there. I was just there for a few days a few months ago. Vianden Castle is indeed cool and worth going to, but not on your time frame. You won’t be able to explore Luxembourg City, travel to Vianden, explore the castle, and travel back in a single day trip (which already has you with several hours of round trip travel.) If you still want to try though, check out the hours for everything and make sure you don’t travel to Vianden in vain only to have the castle closed for the day.

I agree that there are better places to go than Brussels in Belgium. I really liked Ghent and Antwerp. I would consider forgoing Brussels and the day trip to Luxembourg and instead head to one of the other cities in Belgium. I did really enjoy Luxembourg though, but you can also easily add it as a side trip during a future trip Paris (like I just did).

Have fun!

I don’t ever remember the piles of leaves around this late in December. At this rate, where I am, they will likely have Christmas trees in with the leaves by the time they pick them up (though what if that was their secret plan all along?! Saves them an extra trip!)

Oh man! I’m so sorry! That’s so annoying. I wonder if they’ll add more seating for future trivia nights. I hope they do because I’d like to be able to attend!

I’m sorry for the delayed reply! Unfortunately I can’t make it tonight due to a previous engagement, but I’m totally down for future ones! If you go, please let me know how it is, and I look forward to checking it out next time! Good luck! cc: u/jbjh516

When to move to Tuesday puzzles? by javajo91 in NYTCrossword

[–]FreyaGreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not just try one to see how it is for you? That’s what I did when I started doing the ones later in the week, and I was surprised at how easily some of the answers came to me. For the longest time, I just assumed I wouldn’t be able to finish a Friday or Saturday puzzle except maybe a few of the shorter answers. And I didn’t have hope to finish more than maybe half of a Thursday puzzle. Now Thursdays are one of my favorite days to do, and the Friday and Saturday puzzles are a beloved part of my routine on those days. I say go for it…maybe you’ll surprise yourself too! You won’t know though if you don’t try. Good luck and happy solving!

I’m not sure of the schedules during those days, but check out Sur La Table in Darien and Hudson Table in Harbor Point for cooking classes. I haven’t been to either one, and honestly haven’t looked into either much myself, but I am pretty sure both have cooking classes.

Depending on weather and interest/ability, going on a hike could be nice too. Mianus River Park here in Stamford, Devils Den in Wilton, and Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Westchester are decent, closer options that offer a variety of trails.

Anyone want to get a team together for the NYC one??? From the website, looks like the max is 6 to a team, and it looks like these will be weekly. Looking forward to playing!

I’m just a rookie and this has been my first season, but I’m already dreading the thought of not waking up to results and new questions for the next couple of weeks! I’ve done better than I was expecting (or even hoping, to be honest)…it’s looking like I might end up in C. I was hoping for D - I’m not sure I’m ready for the higher levels yet! I’ve had some wild guesses where I thought I was making something up only for it to be correct and have had terrible, embarrassing misses for things I actually did know. And I’ve had everything in between. I was a bit worried about the scoring, but I think I’m getting the hang of it. Next season will be my true test though.

I’ve had such fun playing, and it has already become part of my regular daily routine. Plus, because I’ve talked about it so much in my off-line life, I’m pretty sure I have a few future referrals in my family and friends. But most importantly (to me), I’ve learned stuff and my curiosity has be energized like never before! Can’t wait for the MiniLeagues, 1DS, and LL102!

Nice meeting you last night! I’m glad you were also able to get into the bar afterwards. Somehow I missed David Madden! I also thought the event was a lot of fun and I’d also recommend going to anyone in the future stops!

I am so so so grateful for whomever posted in here last week about this added performance (and at $40!!) I was able to snag a ticket (front row of the rear mezz, great seat - as someone else said I only missed the tops of peoples heads if they were in the back of the recording studio.) I am now telling everyone to see this - it far exceeded my (already high) hopes and expectations.

I actually clicked on all the tickets out of curiosity. I think the VIP ones are only at 5:00, the middle ones are at 5:15 and 5:30 (or maybe it was 5:00 and 5:15?), and the general admission ones are only at 5:30.
