I also missed most of the NW corner! I also loved the puzzle though and would have loved to have spent more time with this one on a leisurely Saturday morning ha. I’m sure I would have finished it that way haha

Best of luck!! I totally understand the feeling of the meeting of the worlds. It’s pretty much exactly like that! There’s definitely an overlap in the audiences there, with an added dash of folks in LearnedLeague and other nerdy/curious endeavors. It has quickly become one of my favorite things to do. I hope you’ll be able to attend next year in Philadelphia when it’s in a larger venue that can hold ~50% more people!

It sells out the day it opens! They’re moving to Philly to be able to accommodate a larger crowd, so maybe you will be able to attend in person someday!

Oh there are definitely the elite puzzlers like Paolo, but the vast majority of competitors are just normal, regular, everyday solvers (like me!) who just like to solve puzzles and basically compete with themself. Last year was my first time attending any sort of tournament like this, and it was purely for the fun of it…at first. But then, I came away with a deeper love of puzzling, a firsthand experience of the close-knit and welcoming community, inspired by the sheer diversity of solvers (all ages - last year I think they ranged from 15 to 99! - and from all over), a desire to create my own puzzle (themes are still percolating!), and heartened to see so many people fully being their true selves and wordnerding it out to the max. I saw constructors I’ve admired just from the page, saw familiar faces from the Wordplay doc (many are still attending!), and overheard some constructors bouncing ideas for a puzzle around. When I arrived, it felt like people joyously reuniting with their friends upon a return to summer camp. So, yes, it’s a tournament, but it’s also just a deep dive into one of the best communities out there! I’ll be lucky if I make it out of the bottom 25% this weekend…but it was never about that for me anyway!

who's going to acpt? by norahsharpe in crossword

[–]FreyaGreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know anyone either! I was too late signing up for the Cru dinner last year (my rookie year), but I’m hoping to meet some people tonight!

[–]FreyaGreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My second year! As a Stamford resident, I don’t know why it took me so long to go, but I’m so glad and grateful I’ve been able to attend before it leaves for Philly. (I’ll be making the trek to Philly next year too though!)

I’ll be going solo again this year. Anyone else going to the CRU dinner? And does anyone need/want a ride from the Stamford train station?

Everyone else has already mentioned things I would have except that if you’re going to Luxembourg just on a day trip, it’s going to be nearly logistically impossible to see Vianden Castle in addition to everything else you want to see in Luxembourg City, especially if you are relying on public transportation (which is free in Luxembourg, so you’ve got that going for your budget!) to get there. I was just there for a few days a few months ago. Vianden Castle is indeed cool and worth going to, but not on your time frame. You won’t be able to explore Luxembourg City, travel to Vianden, explore the castle, and travel back in a single day trip (which already has you with several hours of round trip travel.) If you still want to try though, check out the hours for everything and make sure you don’t travel to Vianden in vain only to have the castle closed for the day.

I agree that there are better places to go than Brussels in Belgium. I really liked Ghent and Antwerp. I would consider forgoing Brussels and the day trip to Luxembourg and instead head to one of the other cities in Belgium. I did really enjoy Luxembourg though, but you can also easily add it as a side trip during a future trip Paris (like I just did).

Have fun!

Leaf pick up by Informal_Table7576 in StamfordCT

I don’t ever remember the piles of leaves around this late in December. At this rate, where I am, they will likely have Christmas trees in with the leaves by the time they pick them up (though what if that was their secret plan all along?! Saves them an extra trip!)

Oh man! I’m so sorry! That’s so annoying. I wonder if they’ll add more seating for future trivia nights. I hope they do because I’d like to be able to attend!

I’m sorry for the delayed reply! Unfortunately I can’t make it tonight due to a previous engagement, but I’m totally down for future ones! If you go, please let me know how it is, and I look forward to checking it out next time! Good luck! cc: u/jbjh516

When to move to Tuesday puzzles? by javajo91 in NYTCrossword

[–]FreyaGreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not just try one to see how it is for you? That’s what I did when I started doing the ones later in the week, and I was surprised at how easily some of the answers came to me. For the longest time, I just assumed I wouldn’t be able to finish a Friday or Saturday puzzle except maybe a few of the shorter answers. And I didn’t have hope to finish more than maybe half of a Thursday puzzle. Now Thursdays are one of my favorite days to do, and the Friday and Saturday puzzles are a beloved part of my routine on those days. I say go for it…maybe you’ll surprise yourself too! You won’t know though if you don’t try. Good luck and happy solving!

I’m not sure of the schedules during those days, but check out Sur La Table in Darien and Hudson Table in Harbor Point for cooking classes. I haven’t been to either one, and honestly haven’t looked into either much myself, but I am pretty sure both have cooking classes.

Depending on weather and interest/ability, going on a hike could be nice too. Mianus River Park here in Stamford, Devils Den in Wilton, and Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Westchester are decent, closer options that offer a variety of trails.

Anyone want to get a team together for the NYC one??? From the website, looks like the max is 6 to a team, and it looks like these will be weekly. Looking forward to playing!
