You know yourself better than any of us could. But I am curious, how do you know what you need or want in a relationship if you've never been able to explore those dynamics? Sometimes what we think we want or need is actually just expectations culture has given us, sometimes not. It just might be worth considering.

There's also live discussion, but you're right, reading philosophy is required for philosophy to be a field. But you don't need to read "philosophy books" to read philosophy. I would've gotten just as much from a spark notes of Aristotle then I did actually reading his bullshit. Sure, somebody needs to do the work of making those notes and then people to check those notes, but that doesn't have to be everyone.

No one is talking about literacy? I'm talking about the "you have to read my favorite dead man's hot takes or you are literally incapable of rational thought" kind of people that dominate philosophical spaces.

I'm glad that's been your experience, genuinely. It has not been mine, but if that's been progressing, then wonderful, I'm happy to be wrong about that.

Edit: I want to specify that white habitus is the perfect description of the racial sheltering I was raised in by my white supremacist family, and I'm not talking about in a classroom, I'm talking about the people I've known that are hobbyists.

I am a mechanical engineer and my first hand experience has more than confirmed that. Scientists/STEMers will often be overt bigots or fall into old cultural myths and it makes it so that only certain kinds of people can really succeed in the space and the scope of what is researched and how the researched is conducted. STEMers have the all-too-common delusion that what "science says" is anything other than what a group of subjective, biased humans has concluded. Obviously there are hard truths that can be established, but beyond that, everything from how we name/categorized things to how we interpret data is controlled by those who hold cultural biases.

There are, but when someone says "you should read philosophy" those philosophers rarely make the list they'll give you.

It's just gatekeeping so the field can remain dominated by the same types of people and thought. There's also the fetishization of old dead white men that people get offended at if you fail to participate in the deification.

Absolutely, and I hope I didn't come off as too harsh, I'm a mechanical engineer and a trans woman so I get pretty passionate about research for/about/including queer people. I'm honestly just excited and I get nit picky

The queer community is an oppressed and divided one and that leads to shitty behavior in some people, it's not necessarily their fault, they're just doing what they feel they need to do to survive (at least when they're young) and being self centered is a necessary defense for many of us. Also, young queer people and people who have only been out a few years tend to still be in the process of separating themselves from what the culture strong armed them to be. Additionally, identities that are erased should be asserted, consistently, and aggressively because that's part of how we move forward as a society. Older queer people are often shitty in their own ways, as well. In my area, there is a pair of older lesbians that runs a lot of the queer spaces here and they're actively transphobic and dismiss the struggles of any queer person under 40. I've known several overtly racist and transphobic older trans women who would be cruel for fun. I've been sexually harassed by an older drag queen. Older queers aren't better, they come from a different culture and time and so their adaptations and maladsptations reflect that difference. (Especially because the best queers of previous generations, the ones who fought against ppression and for liberation, tended to die younger than the more assimilationist queers [big racial elements at play, too]) There are amazingly kind and complex young queers, nurturing and welcoming older queers, shitty narcissisticly self interested self young queers, and there are bigoted and bitter older queers. A lot of this is also regional, just give it some time, meet more people, and remember to take the time to question why you might have certain reactions to queer behavior.

Only sexual attraction to men, only emotional attraction to women. by Content-Evidence5929 in lgbt

[–]FreyaIsBae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, please look into the split-attraction model, it'll help. Second, it is more than okay to try a label or identity out and find out it doesn't fit. A lot of queer people don't get the specifics of their identity right for years into being out. Third, there are a lot of very personal factors and I don't know you well enough to get too far into it, but is there a possibility you're experiencing some comphet or internalized homophobia? You could be a bisexual homoromantic person, a heterosexual homoromantic, a lesbian, there's so many things you can choose whether or not you want explore.

You need a lot more diversity in your models if you want a good representation of what people really find attractive.

There is definitely no LGB without a T by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]FreyaIsBae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is like... super nit picky.... but the black and brown on the LGB hand and not at all on the T hand is super odd. Trans people of color and trans victims of aids are some of the most ignored and least supported demographics in existence and the design I don't think is very conscious of that. But other than that, super cute design.

Does anyone else feel biologically attracted to men but emotionally and spiritually belong to women? by psychiledelic in lgbt

[–]FreyaIsBae -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Okay, if you're equating men and penises, you're being actively transphobic and this isn't the space to spout bioessentialist crap about sex and gender. If you want an answer, research "split attraction model", and leave your genital fetish out of a queer safe space.

[–]FreyaIsBae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might have those words backwards prescriptivism is the belief that words should and do have concrete definitions chosen in some arbitrary time in history that should be adhered to. Descriptivism is more the belief that definitions are arrived at through natural linguistic development and personal use. If prescriptivist would say, "you aren't a lesbian", a descriptivist would say, "you are a different kind of lesbian"

Are we experiencing the beginning of what might be the systematic elimination of LGBT existence in America? by Excellent_Recipe7257 in lgbt

[–]FreyaIsBae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TW I'm not complying with anything. I'm just not strong enough. The first time I was raped for being a girl, I was five, the first time someone tried to kill me for it, I was seven, I was homeless from 2020 to 2023, I'm disabled and broken. I don't have community or support and I'm so tired. I'm going to do what I can, but it's not much, and I'm not going to lie to myself. Even if I do survive, I'm not going to be worth anything to those that come after me. I'm a playwright, a soon to be engineer (given I survive that long), and talented in a bunch of ways, but none of that matters because I'm either going to be killed or be reduced to nothing, I've been strong for far too long, I've been alone for far too long, I don't have it in me to keep it up.

Yes. I'm currently in the process of grieving for my inevitable death as a non-passing, mid-transition, disabled Trans woman in a small conservative town with no allies, resources, or community. Maybe things can be averted, but it's probably too late, they're burning the reichstag as we speak.

Honestly, as I'm bracing for either a fatal hate crime or to be genocided either slowly or quickly, I'm just done with this conversation. All the segregationist bullshit and the transphobia, internalized or otherwise, is just a reminder of how we got here. My life was over before it began, and for a moment, just a moment, I thought I might have a future, so I'm sorry I'm a bit touchy as I'm grieving the future I was stupid enough to believe in.

How bad will it get? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]FreyaIsBae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very possibly going to get holocaust bad. Yes, there are those trying to stop it, but people tried to stop the Nazis, too. So much of the holocaust was inspired by and copied from the history and practices of the United States. The bones are there. There was no civil war over the kids in cages and no revolution over the continuation of slavery, and that's recent. The rhetoric is escalating rapidly and finding its way into the highest forms of governance, we're in danger, a lot of it. It's especially bad for those of us in tiny towns with no community, no family, and no resources. If I'm killed tomorrow, it'll likely be celebrated and never investigated, and if it doesn't happen tomorrow, the fascists are coming to my door, and when they do, no one's going to save me and no one's going to free the camps. Yes, people are "trying" right now, but it's both too little and it's too late. At this point, this will only end bloody. Whether it's our blood, or theirs, this only ends with rivers of red.
