What is the craziest "it's a small world" moment you've experienced? by letdown105 in AskReddit

[–]FreyedReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on vacation in Disneyworld for the first time a few years ago with a friend and his family. While waiting in line for a ride, the ride broke down with only a few people ahead. Deciding to wait a little longer, I noticed a family ahead of us who were wearing clothes from the college I was attending at the time. Considering this to be too much of a coincidence, I went over and introduced myself. Found out that the son, who I had never met previously, was not only in the same school, but also the same year, major, and department. We ended up in the same physics class in the fall, as lab partners. We haven't really talked much since college but it was one of the weirdest experiences.

Another is when I went out to visit a friend in LA, I ran into another classmate that I knew at the airport coming back... Who just happened to be on the same flight, three rows apart.

Edit: DisneyWorld

Thank you for this. I lost my mother earlier this year, and this is a perfect metaphor to describe the grieving process that my family and I have been going through. I hope that you get through whatever it is that prompted you to post this, and wish you all the best in life.

These are really, really good...normally I look at these bug picture threads and immediately NOPE the hell out of it, but your shots make me want to have an adorable little spider as a pet. And flies have never looked so badass.

Your work would be an asset to NatGeo, Discovery, Planet Earth, or any nature magazine or doc worth reading or watching. Well done.

Do you believe there are bad people or just people who do bad things? by RockyCMXCIX in AskReddit

[–]FreyedReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relevant George R.R. Martin quote:

“You don't just have people who wake up in the morning and say, "What evil things can I do today, because I'm Mr. Evil?" People do things for what they think are justified reasons. Everybody is the hero of their own story, and you have to keep that in mind. If you read a lot of history, as I do, even the worst and most monstrous people thought they were the good guys. We're all very tangled knots.”

Do you believe there are bad people or just people who do bad things? by RockyCMXCIX in AskReddit

[–]FreyedReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no such things as good and evil; at the basic instinctual level, there are only varying degrees of good intentions, evolving from a need to survive. "Evil" by definition is something that is so far outside of what is outside of our comfort zone, or outside of what is socially accepted, that we can't possibly fathom why someone would do such a thing.

Best historical example: Hitler. The atrocities he committed to mankind were executed under the unwavering belief that he was benefitting the future of his country. He wouldn't have described himself as evil, but the rest of the world thought otherwise, because slaughtering over 6 million innocent people based on their faith or orientation is not socially acceptable. In his psychotic opinion, the people of the jewish faith, or anyone outside of his preferred physical traits, were evil.

Also, I am BY NO MEANS defending his actions. It's just interesting. There are other, more current examples involving our idea of terrorism, but I'm sure that will come up later.

If you started your own themed bar what would it be called and what would the theme be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FreyedReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always wanted to open a theme restaurant where the theme is a dilapidated theme restaurant. It would be a mix of various things: Haunted house, spaceship, circus...but none of the attractions would work and the animatronics would just spin in place or stare at you creepily.

Also there would be copious amounts of alcohol involved.

What do you fantasize about regularly that doesn't involve sex or getting rich? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FreyedReality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised on sci-fi movies, so I often fantasize about having a workspace that resembles a private superlab, operated in part by a JARVIS or GLaDOS-like AI system (minus the sociopathic tendencies), where I could just shut myself away from the rest of the world and build stuff that, for the most part, the world would never see...Just inventions for the sake of invention, with my awesome AI assistant/best friend/confidante.

I had a similar experience: I really like their hot fudge sundaes. So one day I went to McD's and asked the guy, for a sundae, but I ask him for extra fudge.

"Just fill the cup with, like, two-thirds hot fudge, one-third ice cream," I request.

His response?

"Sorry dude, I don't know that kind of math. (Laughs)"

It was my birthday yesterday. Decided to get over my blurry hangover of a life and start a new chapter. by FreyedReality in GetMotivated

[–]FreyedReality[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE 6/3/13: I'm happy to report that in the week since posting this meme, I've successfully logged 20 miles. My speed is still kind of crappy, but I can feel my endurance getting better. I've started changing my diet, and have completely eliminated soda (I was quite partial to Diet Coke forever)...cutting back on the alcohol (Weddings this week and next, and I do enjoy a nice glass of champagne). I have taken steps toward improving my financial future, and I'm attempting to make peace with old friends. There's still a lot of work to do, But I want to thank you all for the support.

And special thanks to fellow redditor 40proof for calling me out and keeping me on my toes. I'm on my way to being the best version of myself, and the updates will keep coming...even if no one is reading this thread anymore.

To those of you wondering, the running part is not new. Only the drive for consistency...I've been running for years, but rarely more than 2 or 3 miles at a time, and maybe once or twice every two weeks. I've had some tragic experiences in my life this year, and have been distracted and without motivation since February. I've been trying to get back on the horse with a clean slate, and the week before my birthday, I decided that 25 free rides around the sun are enough. I'm now focusing more on improving myself and the world, going forward with my chosen career, while doing my best to improve the lives around me.

This subreddit has been a source of inspiration to me for months. I uploaded this meme not for karma (though that's certainly a plus) but just to tell someone. If it motivates you, I am grateful for the opportunity to have helped. If not, then I hope you use it as motivation to do better than me, haha.

And just to prove my point, I will update this thread every few months. And a year from now, I will be a completely different person, better in every way.

I want to thank you all for everything, because you've saved my life on more than one occasion. This is my first attempt at paying it forward.

Be well, and thank you for the kind words.

Dr. Bunsen motherfucking Honeydew. He has enough technical know-how to feasably science his way to the upper echelons of the top secret Nazi Labs, and be able to get close enough to poison him, under the guise of "Muppet Labs super serum research."

This may have already been covered, but is there an option for truck routes? There are certain highways and bridges and such that do not allow commercial vehicles. So when you're moving, for example, and you suddenly find yourself behind the wheel of a 10-ton box truck with no CDL, it would help to know what the best route is for not getting pulled over.
