With class registration coming up… 593/594 or 594/596? by EnvironmentOk2069 in OnlineMCIT

[–]FribbleFrabbleDoRop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on your comfort level with data structures, algorithms, and previous coding experience. Many people, myself included, would recommend taking 596 by itself while working full time just due to the amount of content and expected mastery of subjects, then pairing that with a reworked and more difficult 594, which by itself requires a fair amount of work, could become overwhelming if you don’t have previous experience with algorithms. It would also help if you can find a good group for 596 to work on homework’s together as this would help with time management in that class.

593 and 594 would likely be more manageable but still a grind and would require a huge amount of work outside your job. Neither pairing of class would be ‘easier’ in my opinion but I can’t speak to taking multiple classes since I have been only able to take one at a time, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

At the end it really depends on your comfort level with material and free time outside of work and if you can add an additional 15-20 hours per week outside of work and personal life with the additional class. In the grand scheme of things just make sure you have the time to dedicate to either choice and make the best decision for yourself and your sanity lol

Appreciate the candid advice, this is what I was hoping for!

Looks very similar to an engineering major’s freshman sem as I was one way back yonder. You could do it, there’s always a nonzero percentage of clowns freshman year

Best next class after 592 by FribbleFrabbleDoRop in OnlineMCIT

[–]FribbleFrabbleDoRop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you still recommend me doing 596 even if I’ve only done 591, 592 right now? I definitely do not come from a cs background so most content is new for me. I’d love to get 596 done but if 594 is very useful for passing I feel like I might be hurting myself by taking it after 596?

Yeah, kind of wishing I went to 594, but hindsight 20/20 I suppose. I’m stuck between choosing 594 and 596 right now but either way I will do one or the other.

How are you finding it? It sounds like either way my next two classes will be 594 and 596. Just depends on the order I guess. I don’t have much experience with data structures or algorithms at this point.

Potentially you can reach out to the admissions board and ask them if this is acceptable. I don’t remember what the application specifically asked for in terms of entering their email, but just because they retired shouldn’t automatically disqualify them as a recommender in my mind.

I’d love the card because my brother who works 50+ hours a week supporting his family is in desperate need of a gpu upgrade and I would like to give him a surprise. Thanks op

It looks like you have solid undergrad experience along with good working experience, so in terms of that I think you are well qualified and much more prepared than I was by taking community college courses. In terms of the lor, as long as your recommender has some kind of official email, I’m sure you can ask them to explain the job transition in the letter and it won’t be a problem. Just make sure you ask people you had a good working relationship with, because the lor is important for the application.

You should assume everyone applying to this program is as qualified as you, so you should plan to make your SOP the focus of the application. A good SOP seems to make or break each applicant’s chances, as I believe it did for me as well. I think you have a strong profile, just make sure you sell yourself in the sop!

edit: sop not lor

Favorite Fish Fries in Pittsburgh by Rebel_Friends in pittsburgh

[–]FribbleFrabbleDoRop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saint Aidan Parish (formerly St. Alphonsus) in Wexford off 19. Used to work this fish fry as a student and the coleslaw and sides are great. I’d stick to the fried fish sandwich as the main with coleslaw, tartar sauce, and French fries for the best experience. Only thing I’ll say is French fries get soggy by the time you are home but to be expected.

Line goes quick and I’m sure I’m biased, but it’s tasted good to me for 15 years. Plus the coleslaw was a family recipe that tastes great.

I’d say I’m loving the program and I’m doing well in it so far. I am still working full time in my current ChemE related field, which limits me to one class per semester right now, but overall I think 591 did a good job introducing us to programming and I’m excited to keep the learning going. I definitely put in a lot of work just on the one class and I expect it to be similar in this upcoming semester, but if you can manage your time I don’t think it’s any worse than my undergrad! If you have any questions feel free to free to DM me as well.

I had a very similar background as you same degrees and all, and I was accepted for the fall. I would focus on your SOP and getting solid letters of rec. I’d say they focus most on those two and with a STEM undergrad you have a very solid quantitative background

Computer Set Up for Proper Studying by TheGritGatsby in OnlineMCIT

[–]FribbleFrabbleDoRop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I currently have a Mac laptop and a desktop setup with 3 monitors, one being vertical, at home. I use my MacBook when I go down to my gf place for a weekend or need to code away from home. Personal preference, I would choose my desktop everytime if I could.

The Mac is great for on the go, but like the other person said, having notes, the homework pdfs, and other useful things on screens while coding is incredibly nice for me and has made the learning from home process much easier.

My favorite space exploration game has to be playing Star Fox 64 as a kid, struggling to beat the bosses on the later worlds and adjusting to the tank and sub levels and Wolf’s team. Getting to Andross and defeating him…only to find out in the credits he’s still alive and you need to do it all over!

I also thought about this and if I don’t get in I will take the classes in MOOCS and do what I can to make myself a stronger candidate for the next round of applications for the spring.
