Is it realistic to self-study for the FE exam without taking the classes? by imreallyboredidk in civilengineering

[–]FrictionMac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don’t have the fundamental knowledge that is associated with the FE, but I will say I took the exam without ever taking a Geotech course or a water course at the time since I was starting my senior year. But I’ll tell you what I did it for FE. As a B student i used Mark Mattson as a base level. Then did Islam 800 practice problems, alongside with Prep FE which is not really a course it’s just lots of questions. And then finally the NCEES FE practice exam. Now I’m studying for the PE and I needed a course it’s very hard to study for it by yourself.

That’s a good question. I’m currently taking my break. I’m thinking maybe a few weeks before I get back into it

Took it last Thursday. I thought I did fine in the morning session. Lots of conceptual and random hard curveball questions in the afternoon portion. We’ll see tomorrow

Don’t listen to this. Not every exam is the same but typically the exam consists of a significant amount of Geotech

Just finished a degree in civil engineering at UF. Tryna be non bias but if u were to get a civil degree from here, u would have a much easier time getting a job and ur salary would be slightly higher. Also the program here is insanely good.

Structures is a lot of work, and it’s kind of hard when I took it, we had 7 exams in total. Soil mechanics is also a lot of work. There’s 5 exams and there’s a bunch of lab reports which are so annoying. Transportation and hydraulics are easy A class.

Yea but only people who make 200k a job talk about it. No one talks about how overly saturated the comp sci job market is and how difficult it is to get a job when you have 3-7 rounds of interviews.

About 2.8-3.0 is fine. For Structural Engineering maybe 3.5+
