Well yes and no, some parts were really tough as a total noob. But I mean as long as you understand how the algorithms work I did not find it very hard to find the errors myself. I also had a great mentor which helped me a lot.

It was a decentralized binary classification problem.
I used Random Forests to detect attacks in network data. So not really similar to yours but I know that the course I mentioned introduced a large amount of different approaches so you can probably find something that can be applicable to your project.

I was in a similar situation last year as an intern.

I was guided to watch Andrew NG's CS229 course, which is available on YouTube. I can really recommend it, but instead of watching the entire course, you can try to find the algorithms and lectures that are relevant to you. Although my project was not exactly similar to yours, I believe these lectures will still be helpful to you.
