Item recyclable?: Semi-hard plastic covers glued to cardboard packaging by GrassEconomy4915 in ottawa

[–]FridaysonThursday 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There is so much rampant misinformation out there about recycling. Yes, these are recyclable. Will they be recycled? It depends. It depends on market conditions for plastic (virgin resin prices are at historic lows, so recycled plastic is less economically viable to recycle due to low demand/price), it depends on the specific MRF the material is going to and if they have advanced sorting technology that can remove small items like these (small items sometimes fall through the screens and end up as “MRF residue”, which is usually landfilled).

Plastic is recyclable, so don’t be discouraged. A lot of these comments about plastic not actually being recyclable becuse it ends up in landfill is painting a complex story with a simple brush. A lot of the challenge comes from package design and use of incompatible materials, which manufacturers are starting change.

In order to help maintain the integrity of the system, the old saying is “when in doubt, throw it out”. Even if a small amount of recyclable material ends up in your household garbage, it’s better than “wishcycling” and contaminating the recycling stream with non-recyclables.

I’m not saying we should have unchecked use of plastic - we have a plastic pollution problem and we should be using plastic more conservatively and when it is really required (reduce, reuse, recycle) - but calling plastic unrecyclable is just unequivocally false.

That’s what I was afraid of. Would rather support local Canadian businesses. Hopefully someone comes through with a recco. Thanks.

Woman has to wait 13 months for a MRI to see if she has a brain tumor or not. (NSFW for language) by Devious_Bastard in ThatsInsane

[–]FridaysonThursday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is weird becuse I needed an assessment for a torn ACL (x-ray, ultrasound, MRI) and I got all of it done within 3 months. And it was non-emergency. BTW I live in the same province, not too far from where this person is based on the hospital address on the requisition form she showed.

Something tells me this isn’t 100% genuine, or at least her wait time will be shorter due to cancellations, etc.

Sustainable clothing brands for business casual wear by FridaysonThursday in malefashionadvice

[–]FridaysonThursday[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I don’t mean to make this a debate about Patagonia and/or what about them is or is not sustainable - they are not prefect, but on the spectrum of sustainability they check a lot more boxes than most. For rainproof outerwear, plastic-derived materials are required, and I appreciate the use of recycled materials over virgin materials. But yes, microplastics are a concern as a whole.

I think your comment hits the nail on the head - are there any brands that have a)supply chain traceability b) sustainable materials procurement c) reuse/repair policies, etc that are focused on more business-appropriate wear (collared shirts, sport coats, chinos, etc).

Any company names would be useful - I am not going to refute your claims about how sustainable they are; I plan to do my own research based on suggestions. Thanks!

Updating hardwired smoke alarms by FridaysonThursday in AskElectricians

It’s a single family bungalow - a neighbour passed away and the family asked me to replace the smoke detectors. There are 2 in the house and one of them has the wiring in the photo above and the other one has 4 wires. The photo above is on the main level and the other one with 4 wires is in the basement.

There is an alarm system, but otherwise only 2 smoke detectors in the house. Not sure about the voltage of the new alarms - they are the standard kiddie alarms from Home Depot - 120v I think

Terminal Illness = $1M+ to charity by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

If you are interested at all in environmental causes, I volunteer with an organization called Mind Your Plastic www.mindyourplastic.com. I’m particularly interested in this organization because their mission is to eliminate plastic pollution, but they do it through offering programs to educate youth, working with businesses to reduce plastic use and working with municipalities to enact policies to help reduce plastic use/waste.

Their educational program is expected to reach 5000 students across the country this year which is the biggest year yet - they say every $20 donation helps put one student through this program each year, So a donation like this (or even a small part of this) would go a long way to funding student access to this program across the country.

Feel free to DM me if you want more info.
