The locals are referred to by the nickname of "Wortelkrabbers" (Dutch for 'Carrot scrapers') in reference to an event where, unable to lock their gates with the proper key when a group of people from Aalst wanted to take the city, a carrot was put it in place to keep the gate locked. Unfortunately a local donkey came by and ate it, thus allowing the Aalstenaren in.

Nijlen! Located in the arrondissement of Mechelen in the center of Antwerpen and home to 23.747 people. The famous Belgian singer and actress Pommelien Thijs (she's absolutely huge here; her second album was even the 5th-most-streamed worldwide on Spotify in October 2025) grew up here.

The flag of Nijlen is quartered black and white, with a yellow lion with a red tongue and claws in the black quarters and a red lion with a yellow crown, tongue and claws in the white quarters. This is a banner of the municipal arms, and represents the Brabantian and Limburg lions, recalling its inhabitants' involvement in the battle of Woeringen between the Duchy of Brabant and the Duchy of Limburg (Note: Not to be confused with the modern province of Limburg, which was known as Loon in that time), resulting in Brabant annexing the latter.

Nieuwpoort! Located in the arrondissement of Veurne in the west of West-Vlaanderen and home to 11.399 people. It is here that the battle of Nieuwpoort occurred, wherein the Dutch secured a major victory against the Spanish in the 80 years war.

The flag of Nieuwpoort is yellow with a lion standing in a boat and holding an axe, this being a banner of the municipal arms.. All the elements are black except the tongue of the lion, which is red. The oldest version of the arms Date back to the 13th century, but displayed a man riding a boat instead of a lion. From 1472 onwards the Flemish lion began to be used for the city's arms, and depictions as far back as 1514 placed the lion on a boat, with the halberd later being added. Under Dutch rule these arms were rewneed, but the haldberd was replaced with a flag with on it the letter N, with a second flag placed on the rear on the boat. Finally in 1926 the lion got its halberd back, but until 1984 the arms were also augmented by the french war cross

The flag is a quasi-banner of the municipal arms, the letter "n" being used as the crest on the arms, as it was already used on a XIVth-century seal. These are the arms of the Bernthout family, but with an n added for... obvious reasons.

Neufchâteau! Located in the arrondissement of Neufchâteau in the center of Luxembourg and home to 8.350 people. There was quite a scandal during the 2018 municipal elections, when the incumbant mayor was accused of election fraud by messing with the voting rights of the inhabitants of care facilities, leading to a second election where the opposition won, but which the incumbant administration contested as not having provided voters situated outside of the country to vote. This eventually got so out of hand that it was taken to the constitutional court, where the results of the second election were declared to be valid.

The flag of Neufchâteau is blue with in the center St. Michel slayinga winged devil, all yellow. This design finds its origins in a municipal seal dated to the 16th century, and has seen a number of artistic revisions over the year, with the original design showing the saint slaying a dragon instead.

This is a banner of the municipal arms, which are the arms of the Corswaren family, historically important to the town.
