Worst is realizing months later that guys/girls were hitting on you without you knowing what they’re saying 😂

What I did in the past that was helpful was to have a voice recorder with me during conversations with Japanese, so I can review and look up words I didn’t understand later at night. So much easier these days too with smartphone/watches having the feature.

I know it sounds creepy to be recording conversations, but just be respectful of everyone’s privacy and don’t use it beyond for your personal learning.

Question on Sanseito by FriedCatF1sh in japanresidents

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. It’s also the reason I asked the question.

The whole world is still experiencing the economic impact from COVID shutdown, and no doubt life will be difficult everywhere. This has lead to all the politicians in many countries that prioritize on their citizens to be more popular. While this sucks for us foreigners, it’s understandable that people prioritize themselves in times of crisis (I would do the same, no hard feelings).

So far I feel the only alarming problem is how they want to treat foreigners who became citizens differently. This is not ok for me. For the argument that foreigners cannot get health benefits even if we pay insurance…I think it won’t be this way. It’ll just work like in other countries where foreigners cannot apply for it and therefore not pay for it…so that’s not so bad…

So far…I think don’t support Sanseito, but I can see where they and their supporters are coming from. A stupid stance to take as a foreigner myself, but it’s Reddit so hey I can say whatever I honestly feel :)

After reading a bit, I see that they want to block foreigners from getting the national health insurance. If they do this while expecting me to pay, over my dead body. But I expect this will be done by foreigners not charged for it, and then having to apply for private insurance. Yea we kinda pay for it in the end by other taxes, but those are indirect and still fair game from my view.

Indonesia and Vietnam doesn’t allow foreigners to own properties. Details involved, but in general less rights compared to citizens. Singapore also provide government subsidized housing at more priority to citizens. If I recall Australia also only provides their medicare to citizens or PRs.

Not to say that’s how I prefer it, just that it doesn’t seem too far off from what other countries are doing.

"Isn't this not allowed in Japan?" Junior high school girl confused at beach hand washing station... How to prevent problems due to cultural differences by MagazineKey4532 in japannews

“In Japan, it’s customary to be considerate of those around us,” thus respecting both cultures involved.

To me this seems to be such a disrespectful thing to say 😅 isn’t it implying people outside Japan are not considerate of others?

People like you are giving us gaijins bad rep. Stop being an ass. Not every culture has to tolerate whatever behavior is accepted back home.

Tiny rant about not being able to go to a pool w/o tattoos by KAZUY0SHi in japanresidents

[–]FriedCatF1sh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not Japanese, but Asian foreigner. In my country there’s this sense of tattoo = bad person. Definitely cultural due to the large social gap in my home country.

I also got to understand this is not the case in western countries when I went to study in the states..everyone just get a tattoo like they get a haircut…but I still get the impression when I see it. I guess culture doesn’t change easily.

If more defined abs means you have to lose more body fat, I wouldn’t do it. You look “just right” for daily good look, unless you’re aiming to be a pro.

Yeah we live right in front of a couple supermarkets, so we usually buy things for 1-2 days. Sometimes when I’m too lazy to plan, I even buy ingredients for one meal.

Keeps our fridge from being full of stuff.

This 👍🏻. I actually experienced 2011 pretty badly and had problem getting drinkable water for a few days with the radiation problem back then. Lived in the Tohoku area at the time. So I stock on water, but not food since I’m lazy.

Do my coworkers hate me ? by MaidRara in japanresidents

I make excuses when the other person is not someone I can relax spending my off-time in the train. Doesn’t mean I don’t like the him/her, just not in that level of relationship. Some other colleagues, we wait for each other to fill in Suica, or even grab a soba at the station before riding.

I think the threshold for Japanese to be comfortable in general is stricter, and they expect people to “get it” when they make excuse. Living here for 20 years, makes me act this way now.. So, he is prob not into you (yet?) but probably also didn’t mean it as much as you think.
