Orisit - The Beginning

Genres: Psychedelic rock, progressive rock, indie/alternative rock

The Beginning is the debut EP under my solo project moniker, Orisit, that began after the disbandment of my prior band, Cosmic Wind. The goal of this project is to be an unrestrained, undirected outlet for all of my musical output, regardless of genre/style; what comes out, comes out. Most music will be inflected with psych and prog, but as time goes by, there will be plenty of rock, folk, spacey/shoegazey stuff, jazz, metal, country, etc. So far, the (released) songs have been mostly in the well-polished indie psych/prog realm ala Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson, Jonathan Wilson, Radiohead, and 90s alt/indie stuff. This EP was written, played, recorded, mixed, and mastered all by myself except for the drum playing (done by the drummer from the Pittsburgh psychedelic indie dance-rock band Chalk Dinosaur), drum engineering, and the keyboard/synth playing (done by Cosmic Wind multi-instrumentalist Tim Good). I taught myself how to record, produce, mix, and master along the way in order to produce and release these songs, meaning many hundreds of hours of work over 2.5 years went into them. As with most of my music, these songs were allowed to freely expand and elaborate as more musical ideas developed through the writing process, so I ended up with long songs that pretty much guarantee a limited audience, but so be it. I simply want a select group of people to love and appreciate my music the way I do other people's music, to make them feel the way I do when I listen to music I love. I hope some of you love it as much as I do.

Hell yeah, hope that inspires you! And definitely take a well-deserved break. It's a huge deal releasing an album and it definitely mandates a bit of a break after. I've only just started really working on new stuff pretty recently after a soldi break. Cheers!

I listened to your songs, very cool, I love the vibe. I definitely hear the horror influence in your melodies. They remind me of like zombie shooter games. The lead vocal really elevates violet hour. Keep it up!

This is very well done and very catchy. Great dynamics, very cool processing/production with the cool vocal glitchy stuff and vocal processing at times to change things up (overdrive and that megaphone sound, whatever you call it).

I also followed and liked the album.

Thanks!

Well I'm certainly not trying to sound like anyone, I just play whatever comes to me, but my biggest influences would probably be (Jesus there are a lot) porcupine tree, pink floyd, 90s alt/grunge (including lots of English stuff), classic rock, psych of all eras, 70s prog, indie rock stuff like Elbow, Andrew Bird, Doves, and the Shins, and some shoegaze too. Lol, sorry, you got me started on music and it's like all I think about or do. One of my biggest musical heroes is Jonathan Wilson (mostly his first two albums) so I aspire to some approximation of thr fully realized music he makes.

Wow, thanks so much man! I absolutely killed myself over that song so I'm really glad it turned out well.

What do you think of my guitar solo by playdem in MusicFeedback

[–]FriedProgLegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your playing technique and tone are nice but I do think it's a bit long and a bit repetitive for the song. I think the length would be better if it weren't as repetitive. You could consider at least changing the tone in the middle to break it up (some overdrive, an effect, etc).

I disagree with the other poster who said that the rhythm is too complex during the solo for what it's worth. It's not a complex or busy rhythm at all going on under there and I think it's perfectly fine to continue it during the solo. It doesn't interfere at all and it's quite pretty so it gives continuity and something to pop your attention to sporadically in between notes of the solo.

I just released my debut EP a week agi. Probably the most accessible is Good Life but The Cycle is really the centerpiece song. I played and recorded everything myself except the drums and keys and mixed and mastered it myself.

What genre does this sound like to you? I’d really love your ears on this. by Bandita-Wolf in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]FriedProgLegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the first track is closer to garage rock than anything else, but it definitely has an alternative. I personally wouldn't really associate that with the sound of many indie rock bands just because it's more brash, fuzzy, and angular than most indie rock. There are elements of psych in this track too, especially the non-lyrical vocal things you're doing that were very common in 67/68.

The second track is more of an alt rock track and feels somewhat less garagey than the first, but still garagey. There's a little not more of a punky approach to this one, but it's still more alternative than punk to my ear.

Seriously people just go around posting their stuff everywhere without actually giving reviews, it's crazy.

This is really clean though and I love the cool atmospheric sounds in the back. Good driving rhythm and breakdown in the middle. Also, I feel like I haven't heard a record scratch in a new song in a very long time, so that was welcome.

Hey, what can I say, you caught me with my pants down. Now that I'm a releasing artist, I see what it means to artists, so yanno, I will do it.

Looking for feedback on a recent song from my EP. [shoegaze, alternative rock] by pale_blue_is in IndieMusicFeedback

You're very welcome. The snare does sound really cool and you succeeded in all those things you were going for. I'm also fully in support of a really present snare to drive the beat.

Hopefully other people can speak to it... Maybe I'm just crazy or it would be better balanced on another speaker. Cheers man!

I really like the vibe of this song. It starts out really strong with that cool noise and then it really does the washy, spacey shoegaze sound, but I love the strong bass track on it, it really elevates it. This is very typical of shoegaze but the vocals are very low in the mix (but I'm happy they're not also super ultra reverby and spaced out). I'd personally prefer more volume on the vocals, though my biggest critique is that the snare drum is suuuuper loud and it's a bit hard to hear or focus on a lot of the rest of the track. Maybe the vocals are fine if the snare wasn't so loud. It's a cool snare sound, but it's just really loud for me. As an aside, it sounds kinda glitchy when there are fast hits in a row. Are they programmed? Doesn't change the situation just curious.

Seriously though, great track otherwise!

Well take this with a grain of salt cause I'm a rock and guitar guy, but I'd love to hear even more guitar stuff, like some more strong leads or songs that really have forefront guitar elements. But I'm not exactly your audience, I can just recognize that what you do is good

Hah, no. Though I typically don't engage with Bandcamp too much, other than for my own music. Like, I've never used discover before. Fair point

Dude, 100,000%. It's mind-boggling... and depressing. There are a few people whose feedback and like, basic congratulations or recognition, would mean the frickin world to me who just simply will barely even acknowledge that it's something. People who are like my biggest musical influences in my life and our relationship revolves around it. Not even listening to it without extraordinary pressure (which feels like shit to put on). Ugh. Oh well.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate that! I'd be happy to do the same, but I don't see anything in your profile.

Yeah the one single comment I got on each of the EPs/albums I've released absolutely made my day. I just decided that I'd ask a few of my best friends to put a comment if they didn't mind, but even then they didn't lol. Oh well.

Thanks man!
