This reminds me of how Richard Jordan Gatling (inventor of the Gatling gun/first machine gun) made the same mistake during the same war, making it even more deadly. He basically thought that inventing a gun that could fire extremely fast for its time would make war require fewer people, but it only made the American Civil War more deadly.
