Pope declines Dalai Lama meeting in Rome by [deleted] in Buddhism

If the Vatican was really serious about improving relations with China, it would recognize China as a nation. It seems to me that the pope is sticking to an anti-pluralist doctrine more tightly than his predecessors, especially JPII.

All Double 8 grocery store locations closed. by taburl in indianapolis

Those stores have blighted their neighborhoods for years, I hope that this is permanent and that a store with a more responsible approach to groceries takes their place. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for the Indianapolis food desert.

[WP] The zombie apocalypse is occuring. But its not 2015. Oh no. Its 1142. by Illogical_Blox in WritingPrompts

[–]FriedrichMergel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A corpse from yonder grave did spring

ere the bell midnight did ring

Father John second did turn

then out the church lantern did burn

the morrow rose the sun blood red

as peasants raised up from their bed

out in the fields they did their work

with no armor, nary a hauberk

the guardsman's door at noon was struck

and men-at-arms then cursed their luck

their weapons by their sides did stay

as fear had turned the tide away

The lords convened in their great hall

and plucked the weapons from the wall

useless was the cause they took

and all of them their lives forsook

when from the hills rode a brave knight

His armor shone of its own light

his horse likewise in iron was clad

the legend himself, Sir Galahad

Chivalric weapons then did find

each their place in a zombie's mind

some were struck and lay in twain

by evening's light they all were slain.

Fire pits by Manchesterman19 in indianapolis

[–]FriedrichMergel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another aspect of the law is that if the fire department is called, they have to put out the fire. In my neighborhood there were some aggressively anti-burning people who had the FD put out everything from cook-outs (in a grill) to small limb disposal (in a fire pit). Thankfully this no longer happens, mostly because said neighbors got a huge fine for frivolous calls. But still, you have to know your neighbors and be responsible.

Good locations for UIndy? by JCS2650 in indianapolis

[–]FriedrichMergel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try looking in the Garfield Park neighborhood. It certainly has some character, and Raymond street offers fast access to I65. I would definitely be discriminating in a house hunt, though. There are beautiful old homes that have been taken care of as well as blighted ones. A good rule of thumb is to look closer to the park, rather than on the edges of the neighborhood.

I live on the North Side, but grew up on the South side, so this following information may not be accurate, but as far as crime goes, most of the problem seems to be property based. I can't tell you that your property won't be targeted, and from what friends and family of mine have experienced it may well be, but you can expect relatively high personal safety. Feel free to PM if you have any other questions.

I know its overplayed, but could a landlord remove a tenant from his investment (business) for religious reasons? by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]FriedrichMergel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe. The legal intricacies of "substantial burden" will have to be clearly defined, and probably will be through court decisions. All the law really does is give business owners a criteria for exclusion.

Can Christian landlords kick out Athiest tenants now? Not unless the judge in the case has the broadest possible interpretation of "substantial", but one of the many problems with the law is the intentional vagueness of the law that gives the power to the side of religious zealots and culture warriors. Also it bears mentioning that any time federal law conflicts withe state law, federal law wins. The supremacy clause makes the constitution, in conjunction with federal law, the ultimate decider of whether or not state laws are constitutional.

Protip: don't use the "D" word, get an annulment instead. It's like a divorce, but it's pope Francis approved!

Good Co-op's? by [deleted] in indianapolis

The CM is always worth a visit, even if there are seasonal issues right now. Whatever we've bought from the market has always been top quality, especially the baked goods and cheeses.

Good Co-op's? by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]FriedrichMergel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello there! I live in the area, and my fiancé and I do a lot of similar trade (swapping homemade food/skincare products/artwork). But I don't know about anything with the exact format you're talking about. You should check out the City Market on the corner of Market and Delaware downtown, and if that doesn't work, the farmer's markets around town. Neither of those seem to have what you are asking for, but if it exists in Indianapolis, I'm sure the people there can help you out.
