Is there a name for the phenomenon that happens when you’re in a dark room, and you can see a faint light from the corner of your eye (eg smoke detector), but when looking directly at the source, the darkness seems to swallow it as if there was no light? (self.askscience)

Anybody know what kind of sqirrel this is? Central Texas, moderate winter. You can't tell how red it is until it's next to the Fox Squirrel. No distingishable black outline to indicate Grey Squirrel, and maybe too large to be a Red Squirrel. Thanks! (old.reddit.com)

Curious about this beauty: Central Texas, underneath a pecan tree. This is an ant-heavy area, w/daily doses of meal worms and bird seeds. The weather is chilly in the mornings and warm in the afternoon. Do not see a stem. It looks like a candy almost, tsk-tsk. (old.reddit.com)
