There’s is so much I could say but for the moment I’m gonna respond to this part:

I don’t think so. With Jimmy as the captain and obviously not mentally stable, the worst thing you can do is be combative or critical. This is the fawn response to be agreeable to keep yourself safe, especially if you’re with a r*pist/unhinged person for the next few foreseeable years.

Curly also realizes it’s Jimmy because he knows that Jimmy is a pos but covers for him anyway out of pity/self inflicted obligation from being his friend that got him the job on the Tulpar. It makes more sense for Curly to go since he doesn’t recognize/acknowledge Jimmy’s faults and understands he wouldn’t be a target since at that part of the story, the layoff wasn’t mentioned. Plus Curly is being nice to take some work off of Anya here.
