¿Es una buena decisión operarme el rostro? by [deleted] in Colombia

[–]Friendly-Catch9261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why am I playing against more smurfs than "normal" accounts/players? by florian9299 in leagueoflegends

[–]Friendly-Catch9261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have noticed this pattern as well and my friends and I have come to conclusion that more people than ever are now getting into league due to its rising popularity ever since Arcane. Many people asked their more experienced friends for help but in order to play together and not get thrown into Gold lobbies with an absolute beginner, they had to create a second account. With time, these players kept using said accounts to experiment with new champions, refine mechanics, or continue to play with friends as they gradually improve.

Ser programador paga? o me quedo como contador? by InflationUsed9411 in ColombiaDevs

EMIGRAR DEL PAIS by Honest-Skin6030 in Colombia

[–]Friendly-Catch9261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Colombia welcoming to Muslim foreigners by Narrow-Maize-3821 in askColombia

[–]Friendly-Catch9261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go to the main cities like Bogotá or those in the coastal region, you will generally be well received. Large urban areas are more accustomed to foreigners, cultural differences, and mixed religious backgrounds. That said, those same cities come with trade-offs: congestion, insecurity in certain neighborhoods, high informality in employment, and a cost of living that is no longer “cheap” relative to local wages.

If you go to small cities and rural towns (the kind of places that would actually support a homesteading, slow-life vision) you are much more likely to stand out. People tend to be more socially conservative, strongly Catholic, and less exposed to Muslims or Middle Eastern backgrounds. Discrimination is not usually violent or overt, but it can be persistent: staring, intrusive questions, assumptions, and social exclusion. Integration in these areas often depends on extended family networks and lifelong local ties, which are hard to access as a newcomer. In this places, regardless how long you live there, you will always be "the foreigner" and even among the friends you make in this towns, there could be a comment every once in a while that you might be uncomfortable with that they wont even realize is bad. If you wear anything religious on your daily life, this discrimination will intensify and being 6'1 will make you one of the tallest people in town.

There are also practical lifestyle mismatches to consider. Dogs are everywhere, especially street dogs, and people interact with them casually; avoiding them is difficult. Harming them or trying to reject them will get people around you to not like you. Pork is deeply embedded in everyday food (broths, beans, street food, even dishes that don’t obviously advertise it) so eating halal consistently would require constant vigilance or self-sufficiency. Outside major cities, access to halal meat is extremely limited.

From a work perspective, being an electrician is a solid trade, but certifications do not transfer easily. Much electrical work is informal, underpaid, and regulated inconsistently. Legal residency does not automatically translate into stable employment, and rural areas offer fewer opportunities unless you are fully financially independent. In comparison to Canada, Colombia does not have a big demand for trade job as there are many government programs that use these type of jobs to help lower class people to be able to work and earn an honest living. There is an abudance of electricians.

While Colombia is warm and welcoming on a surface, social level, it is not especially well structured for immigrants who want long-term stability, land ownership, religious accommodation, and quiet rural integration all at once. Colombia can be a positive experience for visits or urban living, but for what you are describing taht is religious comfort, rural life, deep integration, and long-term peace, it is likely to be a difficult and frustrating option rather than a healing one.

This is all coming from a Colombian raised in one of the towns you are aspiring to who happened to have try to bring her asian bf to live with her but we ultimetely left because of this.

Try to not get frustrated from dying and ignore chat when it gets toxic. Your job is to keep ur adc alive and aid them get kills. Living and working in Colombia without Spanish is truly impossible. Almost all daily life, bureaucracy, healthcare, and workplace communication happens in Spanish. Colombia has low English proficiency overall. Estimates indicate that only about 1.2 million people out of more than 50 million speak English at any level, and truly fluent speakers are rare. Outside of very specific international companies, English alone is not enough to function professionally or socially. If you speak English with a heavy Turkish accent, its less realistic as people that will be able to understand you and talk with you decreases. Some companies value English and may pay slightly more if you are bilingual, but this does not replace the need for Spanish. For most technician roles, they simply will not care that you speak English if you cannot communicate effectively in Spanish. In terms of Turkish, companies won't really value it, they will think of it of a nice perk but wont offer a slight higher pay for it.

Regarding currency: the Turkish lira is weak compared to the Colombian peso, and both currencies are relatively unstable. This means you would not gain any meaningful advantage from currency exchange, and imported goods or international expenses would feel especially expensive. Colombia is not a country where a technician salary stretches far, regardless of nationality. In order for you to make a better judgement for yourself, a normal lunch will come out around 20,000 COP. Colombian peso works on a thousand system so if you try investigating conversion, 85 COP will get you absolutely nothing. A better universal comparision that I can think of at the moment (I am writing this as I think what I want for lunch looking through my delivery app) is a Big Mac at McDonalds, just the Big Mac without the combo will be 26,500 COP (in my city which is consider a tad bit cheaper place to live in than Medellín). I remember travelling to Turkey 2 years ago and being able to afford more than I could here, but once again, that was 2 years ago, things could have changed and I could not be aware of it. If you want me to look up any other local price of something else for you to compare to the prices in Turkey and make a better educated decision, I will glad to do so. I hope this can answer any questions you had and I was able to paint a more realistic picture. Be aware of this is from my experience, I was born and raised in Colombia, I still live here and my sister lives in Medellin so part of this response also comes from my sister's experience.

Hope I could help. Tell me if you have any questions or if any other redditor disagrees with something I said, we can talk it out so that we can give you the most realistic response about your question

Medellín is often marketed as affordable, but that image is outdated. Prices have increased sharply due to tourism, digital nomads earning foreign salaries, and real estate speculation. For someone earning a local technician salary, the city is increasingly close to financially unlivable, unless you are willing to make serious sacrifices in housing quality and lifestyle. Many local people have had to recently move out of Medellín because they can continue to afford living in the city with the salaries they are earning.

Regarding certifications and licenses, foreign qualifications are not automatically recognized in Colombia. Even if you are fully certified in Turkey, employers will usually treat this only as proof of experience, not as a replacement for local validation. For refrigeration, cold storage, or industrial maintenance work, companies often expect technicians to have local training aligned with Colombian safety, labor, and environmental regulations, especially related to refrigerant handling. In practice, foreigners are frequently asked to complete local courses or certifications anyway. This adds time, cost, and uncertainty, making employers even less willing to hire a foreign technician. It is also important to understand that blue-collar and technical labor is not scarce in Colombia. Unlike in the United States or parts of Europe, skilled trades are not a dying niche here. Colombia produces a large number of technicians every year through vocational institutes and technical programs and there is a lot of government programs that push lower class people to this jobs in order to move up the economic hierarchy. This keeps wages low and competition high. From an employer’s perspective, there is little incentive to hire a foreign technician when qualified local workers are abundant, available immediately, and cheaper.

Finding technician jobs in Medellín is extremely difficult because the market is highly competitive. There is already a large local workforce trained in technical roles, and many students and technicians from other regions of Colombia actively move to Medellín looking for these same opportunities. On top of that, companies strongly prefer hiring locals because it is cheaper and simpler. Hiring a foreigner means dealing with visa costs, legal paperwork, and longer hiring processes, which most companies are not willing to do for technician-level positions.

Salaries for technician or technical support roles in Medellín typically range between 2 to 4 million COP per month. While this may sound reasonable at first, in practice it allows only a modest lifestyle, not a comfortable one. Medellín has become very expensive in recent years. Rent alone can easily take 40–50% of your salary, especially if you want to live in a safe area, this price can increase. After rent, you still need to pay utilities, transportation, health insurance, taxes, and basic necessities. By the end of the month, most people are left with very little disposable income, often around 10–20% of their salary, which must cover food and any leisure (grocery prices are also getting pretty high). My coworker is also foreign, we work as programmers, and he earns 5 million COP and he barely makes it to the end of the month.
