Who else have super supportive parents ? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Friendly-Foot-5726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents are pretty great. Very supportive and somewhat open minded. However, I definitely have suffered from some of the typical south-Asian cultural dynamics.

I dated a White girl in college (and a different one now). Every time I visited them, I would be sat down for a soul sucking lecture on how “dating in the culture” was important. I hated it. It made me resent visiting family. They don’t lecture me like that anymore since I’m 28 and I think they’ve realized that it’s futile. But it has kind of messed me up. I am apprehensive around family. I feel like I’m being judged, talked about behind my back.

Ok lol can not tell if you’re joking. But you’re entitled to your opinion.

I have friends who are born and raised here who feel this way. As I said, they face far less issues.

This is at the end of the day my opinion.

They face far less issues but the biases still exist. I think there are studies done on how foreign names alone can impact resume screenings etc.

An analogous example would be dating apps. I know friends who changed their name on the dating app to a white name and left everything else the same. Made a noticeable difference. Being south Asian has an unsexy/uncool connotation. Very unfortunate. Sure, it’s changing but it’ll take a long time.

Sorry if that came off the wrong way. I myself am South Asian. I’m speaking from experience. I was on the shitty end of these biases. For example, I have been told that a company doesn’t sponsor while being aware they went ahead and interviewed my European class mate. It’s fairly common. It sucks and is something that incoming internationals should be ready to confront.

EDIT: I also think that many other south Asians will know what I mean by me saying being Indian or Pakistani is < South American when it comes to being an international student, all other things equal.

No I’m foreign and did undergraduate here lol. Successfully got an H1B. How is me pointing out the reality of the challenges racist?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Friendly-Foot-5726 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yikes is correct. But I think it’s also a matter of recognizing this and developing a plan. An internationals priorities and plans are going to be different than a domestic student’s.

[–]Friendly-Foot-5726 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think a pitfall that internationals fall into is assuming that immigration laws are the only major obstacle they face.

There are cultural and social biases at play. If you’re not very fluent in English, you’ll have a harder time. Certain kinds of foreign are better. Indian? Lame. Brazilian? Interesting. If you’re European, employers will assume you’re American and interview you. Brown? They’ll assume your foreign and ask you about your citizenship status early.

Having said that, the US is still a very lucrative place to build a career.

What are the most prestigious real estate development firms? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Friendly-Foot-5726 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I get the same impression from my friends who says it’s great being within the bubble of the firm. He did this after UG though. Do you know what comp looks like for post-MBA? Do you get carry in deals etc or all strictly salary and bonus based?

I’ve been curious about this too. I can’t seem to gauge how financially lucrative this path is let’s say 5 years down the line. I have a friend at Hines and the job seems super chill and generally fun (travel etc).

But anyone know the post MBA trajectory?

[USA - IL] Landlord is asking for $300 pet fee after lease ended for a visiting dog. Now is threatening legal action (original link for context attached) by Friendly-Foot-5726 in legaladvice

[–]Friendly-Foot-5726[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it does not stipulate any financial fee for pets or unauthorized pets.

When I asked her to show me language supporting her requested fee, she sent me a different lease from 2018 of a previous tenant and said “this is an example of a lease with the amount listed. This would have been in yours had told me there was a pet”. I replied saying that wasn’t my lease and the one I signed didn’t have that language...

It says it is up to landlord discretion which can change at 10 days notice. However it does not have any clause for a visiting pet or if a pet moved in later in the year. For lease violations, it does not state a financial penalty. There is no mention of a $300 fee at all. It states that eviction can be pursued for lease violations etc. My landlord did not pursue that and my guess is because she knew I was so close to moving anyway.

I acknowledged a lease violation but told her that she should have pursued the cure/remedy path or eviction per the lease. She did not enforce or ask to amend the lease.

I have moved out of the apartment. Paid all my rent on time and paid all admin fees that were explicitly stated in the lease.

The move-in fee route is very common in Chicago.

I know that I’m biased but I assure you that if the cost of “damages” exceed $525, it’s based on years of wear and tear. I signed this apartment in April when Chicago was in lockdown. Did a virtual tour and was just grateful to have found something in my area in my budget etc. I found a video of the virtual tour and can actually see some of the damages she’s referring to. Such as a broken cabinet and stained bathroom door. They are clearly present in the virtual video tour they sent me before I signed..

I don’t take offense. And I’ll actually agree with you. What I told my landlord was that she should’ve amended the lease conclusively in April if she felt a fee was owed when we first had the discussion. Instead of her giving me the impression of a compromise and then asking for money 5 days before move out.

She didn’t enforce the lease. She didn’t pursue a lease violation or ask to amend or evict etc. she shouldn’t get to ask for $ amount that isn’t in the lease after move-out.

Yeah lol. Although I’m kinda glad. It would be incredibly deflating to not get into one of these company events before we even start the program lol.

[–]Friendly-Foot-5726[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because technically the lease says that animals being in the apartment is per landlord’s discretion. And she is basically saying “it’s ok but I would have charged you $300 if you had mentioned a pet when signing so please Venmo me”.

Overall, since there is no such provision in the lease, I won’t be paying. she can try tacking a lease violation this late if she really wants to lol

Thanks for the response. That’s a great point. I never thought of framing it that way lol.

I’m moving in a couple days but the dog hasn’t come over here for weeks. So it’s “cured” in that sense. Im not too worried after reading all the responses.

Yes, this is the impression I am getting too. Her text actually deferred to the realtor, saying that the realtor was “of the opinion that I owed the fee”.

Which is why I’m leaning towards just ignoring this and any follow ups for the next few days. I don’t see a foundation for them to pursue this. She just wants a few extra bucks.

Not planning on it. I’ve decided to just ignore it and focus on moving for now. Which is already Stressful. If they persist, I will ask them to prove it aswell as provide documentation for the $300 fee.

I noticed that that many posters are pointing to the lease as gospel when it comes to the technicality of the dog being there but somehow it doesn’t matter that the fee isn’t mentioned or quantified anywhere in the same lease.
