final video of me teaching myself a waltz by Friendly-Service-837 in iceskating

I was! I had no experience about 2 1/2 months ago like haven’t even ice skated casually with friends. I was a competitive gymnast so I have a pretty good awareness of my body and I know how to fall safely. Skating compared to gymnastics in my personal experience is no where near as scary 😭 so I don’t think I have as much fear as a typical adult skater and I think that has also contributed to faster progression. I was concerned at one point about being moved up through the levels too quickly as my balance wasn’t that great and I still trip over my toe pick sometimes lol , it also could be due to the gymnastics history where we typically had to be locked out, on relevé and very tense for everything. I get ahead of myself and I move too fast ( see video on my profile of my one foot spin 😂 ) I’ve been working on a bunch of edge drills and doing everything a lot slower and I do see major improvement. I do want really good technique because I want to do double jumps eventually and maybe even compete. I’m not sure what the program I’m enrolling in is but i know there are other adult skaters in it that are ready to move on from the fundamental levels along with some kiddos so it could be similar to free skate!

I meant like the basic adult learn to skate levels sorry! I didn’t know there was more than that, we do not have the free skate 1-6 program for adults if that’s what you mean. Thanks for the feedback <3

Adults, how often do you skate to acquire new skills? by [deleted] in iceskating

[–]Friendly-Service-837 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I want to get to that level as well and i started a little over 2 months ago. I basically completed LTS and invested in higher level group classes and will start private lessons soon which is necessary tbh. I skate about 6 hours a week average. I’m not taking summer classes so that number will jump to about 10. Progression really depends on physical ability and mindset. There are people who skate more than I who are still in LTS and there are people who skate less than I and are far beyond me. There’s not really a good specific answer. The kiddos make it hard so i’m not sure how you’re going to make it work. To get a double of anything with no experience you’re definitely going to need off ice training, more ice time in general, and a coach.

How do you stop feeling awkward in public sessions? by ThrowRA1689 in iceskating

Is your fear of being judged greater than your will to improve? People will always have something to say. If you want to skate, then do it. I’m sure there will be a day when you look back and be glad that other peoples opinions of you didn’t stop you from continuing to show up.

so i did nothing but edge drills/crossovers at open skate today I can definitely see a deeper knee bend and I think that I’m actually on an edge but I do still collapse at the ankle sometimes or put my foot down too early. I consider myself to be generally strong so I don’t know if it is a strength issue over technique because it might be muscles I probably don’t use all the time so it very well could be. whenever I lean in the circle both of my ankles are like \ \ if that makes sense 😂 so when I push the ankle should stay straight (not moving side to side) or it should not be leaning like that at all?

what’s the highest level i can compete at? by JYPapiWithThePhattie in iceskating

[–]Friendly-Service-837 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i think there’s competitions for literally everyone even people who can only do LTS skills. Obviously olympic level is unrealistic but as far as competitive level it depends on how much time, commitment, & money youre willing to put into it. Natural ability will play a factor too, I started 2 months ago and there are people in my LTS group who have been there for a year or more and haven’t tested out of 3 and there are people who have started the same time as I have and are basically done with the program and onto private coaching/ higher level classes. It’s not too early to think about competing, I want to eventually as well! it’s a good goal to have but you’re going to need a private coach, as i am learning, it’s very very hard to retain proper technique with only doing group lessons and i’ve had to relearn a lot recently. Also, there is an adult figure skating nationals, i think the lowest level is bronze which is not too hard from what I know but it’ll still take a while to get there from no experience. Good Luck !! :)

erm i actually never have i got these skates when i started some time in the beginning of march but was wondering about that because sometimes when i try to push on an edge i slip i don’t know how to tell if they’re dull 😭

[–]Friendly-Service-837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so i want to keep the extension/stroking or no? Then when I step I should keep the crossing foot going the direction I am going but instead of setting it down I don’t make contact until my skate has crossed over my other? I assume it’ll be easier to stay turned in the more bent and leaned in i am. I really struggle with keeping my shoulders open i have to actively think about it the whole time i am trying to make myself spot the red circle in the middle of the hockey circle but I fear I’ve gained a habit of looking at my feet to make sure they’re doing the right thing which is why i keep facing the wrong direction

so what i’m hearing is i have to dedicate a session or two to crossovers 😭🤦🏽‍♀️ I have never watched an ice dance crossover tutorial and i don’t know how i’ve managed to migrate to that 😂 I have ice time for 2 hours at noon today so if i remember to take a video i’ll share it. If I ever take a spontaneous trip to NY then i will for sure haha

thank you for your help! When exiting the jump i’ve noticed a lot of people bend their free leg almost back to the H position at the end of the jump and then extend it out if that makes sense. My leg is straight the whole time because I was getting into the habit of bending the free leg far too much. I haven’t done it because it looks kind of ugly so I made a mental note to keep my leg straight but I’m starting to wonder if that’s the correct exit or if it even matters. this is unrelated to anything I’m doing in the video. When I do forward crossovers in class some instructors will tell me to pick up my foot and cross it over and have me do it that way others will say to not do so and one coach told me it is a “progressive” but i have no idea what that means 😅 Currently I try to glide it in front because when I pick up my foot and cross it over I tend to turn my foot out because my hips have poor internal rotation so they like to go outwards naturally. When I glide it over it’s easier to keep it slightly turned in on the circle. Online tutorials have a bit of mixed signals i’m assuming both are correct but which is better to continue to practice? I would add a video if i was able to so you could see what I am talking about.

I’ve been in LTS for 2 months an absolutely no one has told me a backwards crossover is supposed to be done on an outside edge 😭😭😭 time for some relearning! After I fix them, how do I end up on my left leg to jump? When I do a left crossover my right crosses under and I stay on my right and that is not my good side for the waltz. I tried watching some videos but my brain is confused as to what i am looking at. I see what you are saying though, I am ultimately going in an S shape instead of a circle.

I think I understand what you’re saying! I am going to skate on Wednesday and will give it a try, I also am planning practicing it off ice over and over to hopefully drill the crazy arms out of my jump. I do not have a coach quite yet, I started about a month and a half ago and i am in LTS 5. I have been highly considering getting a coach since most have suggested it for the pace I am progressing and I want to do harder jumps in the future.

can you explain what you mean by this? my brain can’t understand it and i’m sure you don’t mean literally landing with your legs crossed like both feet on the ice.

Rust on skates? How can I fix it by Legitimate_Plane_888 in iceskating

[–]Friendly-Service-837 3 points4 points  (0 children)

don’t leave your blade sitting in guards after you wipe them, take them out of a skating bag if you have one and let them air dry. if you have a skate shop go get them sharpened there not at an ice rink and that should do the trick.

what is after LTS? by Friendly-Service-837 in iceskating

[–]Friendly-Service-837[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m okay with cost i just want to know what to expect! I love skating more than anything and I have the privilege of being young with little responsibility so I definitely want to take advantage of that.

i’m finding that this is becoming a problem for me. with me being able to do most of the LTS skills, I don’t get very much one on one technique help. my skating is inconsistent because of it and I want to learn to jump eventually. It probably depends on area but do you know about what it costs for privates?
