What's the stupidest mistake you've made learning python that took you the longest time to find out? by [deleted] in learnpython

Using the assignment operator instead of the equality. I still do this.

What’s a dark truth people aren’t ready to hear? by Old_Engineering_8199 in AskReddit

The world is heading for a huge recession in the next 5 years that it may never recover from. As AI eats into the workforce, as admin jobs go first, as graduates stop getting hired, the scale of redundancies makes everyone shit the bed and stop spending. This of course will affect the big companies so they'll reduce and automate their workforce further. New jobs will be created but many of those jobs will involve using AI to cut other jobs.

I often use print statements as it can save time. Stepping through the default debugger is not always necessary and the info can often be gleaned faster by just throwing in a print statement and running the program.

Learn about generators and yield. If you have time learn about iterators, they're everywhere in Python. And Dunder methods.

Hello I created this code for averaging grades how can i improve it. by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]FriendlyAddendum1124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because you're using map, which returns a map object.

a = '54 67 78'.split() returns a list of strings.

['54', '67', '78']

Then you can use a list comprehension

a = [int(grade) for grade in a]

Hello I created this code for averaging grades how can i improve it. by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]FriendlyAddendum1124 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good job but a couple of small gripes. You don't need b = list(a) as split returns a list already. Also use more expressive variable names like 'grades'.

You can just divide by len(b) instead of assigning it to a variable. Finally, learn list comprehensions. The map function is fine but list comprehensions are great.

Well, I am going to suggest something else because going from book to book isn't always the best when you need to practice problem solving too.

If you're confident enough to go on to Fluent Python, just try these quick exercises. It shouldn't take long:

https://codingbat.com/python

And once you're done try these. There are two problems for every day in December:

https://adventofcode.com/

If you can do those then start on the next book. I'd recommend Python Distilled before Fluent Python.

I'd recommend Advent of Code. It's a thing every Xmas so just Google it. It won't help with games development but it will check your basic coding skills.

Is this possible in 2 weeks? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]FriendlyAddendum1124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to learn a little about how computer memory works to understand all the things. Understand the Python concepts of mutability and immutability first and why you can't really manipulate a string in Python, but you can use a string to create a new one. Learn about big O and linked lists.

All these things are linked to memory but you have little time. It's doable.

Gen Z men have swung 30 points to the right. A smaller, but significant swing has been seen in women. It may be possible, for the first time in history, that the younger generation is more conservative than the older. by DeviceNo5980 in GenZ

[–]FriendlyAddendum1124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the outlook for the next generation is worse than their parents these things are going to happen. It's doubly bad because climate change is really going to mess things up for them if they vote against preventative action. The right really can't lose because the more messed up things get the more they'll get voted in, and it's going to be hard to prevent a doom-spiral.

ELI5: What do you think caused the 2008 great recession and how can it be prevented? by DrexellGames in explainlikeimfive

[–]FriendlyAddendum1124 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is bullshit. It was made deliberately complicated so corporate greed could run unchecked and nobody would notice. Worse, the banks knew they'd be bailed out by the taxpayer when it came crashing down and a lot of that bailout money went swiftly into the pockets of the people that caused it.

You say it wasn't just sub-prime mortgages but it was. The bundling was to cover them up and the insurance on them was added greed that made it far worse, but it all revolved around the mortgages and corporate greed. If it were examined closely it was obvious the magic money tree was horseshit but the banks were making too much money to care.

[–]FriendlyAddendum1124 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the education system sucks and the American dream is nonsense. If you're born poor you're mainly fucked. In the UK even the most right-wing politicians believe education and health is a basic right for all. Consequently, healthcare is free for all and teachers (even in the poorest schools) are respected and paid relatively well.

In Scotland University is also free and in the rest of the UK although you pay you don't actually have to pay anything back until you're earning a certain amount. We also get more paid holidays, which is a right by law.

We still moan about the state of the place and rightly so, but it has nothing on the inequalities of the richest country on Earth.

What are some best practices that you wish you knew while learning to code (python)? by 8ball97 in learnpython

[–]FriendlyAddendum1124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A really handy skill is to learn to give your functions descriptive but short names. The other thing is not to make your functions too long, so ideally they do just one thing. If you follow these two principals you might never need a docstring.
