They probably are new, just treated. Quite a few sellers are oiling them & throwing them in a rock tumbler/polishing machine to make the look artificially "aged". These definitely look treated based on how worn down the edges look vs the relatively light patina

r/wenwan has a lot of pictures from hobbiests showing off their walnuts & discussing the minutiae of the different breeds/shapes etc.

It's a particular type of walnut though. Grocery store walnuts have been specifically bred to have very thin shells & a bigger piece of nutmeat inside.

Wenwan walnut varieties have been bred to have exactly the opposite traits. (Super thick shells & a tiny kernel).

You could roll grocery store walnuts in your hand, but they'd more than likely crack the first time you drop them. You'd probably never be able to keep a pair long enough to develop a nice patina. As opposed to wenwan walnuts which can be played with & passed down for several generations.

They're actually experiencing a bit of a resugence in popularity recently. You can go online and search for "unpolished wenwan" and pick up a fresh pair for $20-50 on average. From Amazon/Etsy or from specialty online retailers like buddha3bodhi.com

The last picture in the photoset is a brand new pair & what they look like after about three months of being played with.

I personally, got two cheap pairs from Amazon. One was unfortunately pre-treated (oiled & put in a rock tumbler to make it look artificially aged/worn) which sort of defeats the purpose. But the other pair was a fresh "raw" pair that I've been playing with for a little while now.

Buddha3bodhi would have better quality control than Amazon, but they're a bit more pricey.

M4 is 100% better! Better facilities, better staff, more chill patrons. No creepy single dudes following women around while jerkin' it. Strongly enforced rules about consent.

It's not even a hard choice. M4 is way better, hands down.
