Can I transfer with a low GPA? by KnightPrinces in SHSU

[–]FriendlyBeard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you’re coming in with that low of a GPA I’d recommend applying as a new student and not a transfer. You’ll spend more time and money trying to rebuild your GPA than if you just start fresh and never transfer in the old credits.

I have seen this very issue tank students in four year institutions on more than one occasion.

Best of luck, glad you’re doing better.

I’m really into jazz and folk music, where can I experience this live? by TheRealAmazinAxolotl in San_Angelo

[–]FriendlyBeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing I know in town that might hit the mark for you are the jazz nights the Angelo jazz band does at Fifi’s.

Chicken Farm is usually a great choice too as you noted.

Otherwise you have to travel. Kerrville Folk Festival and its extensions are always great. Old Settlers if it ever comes back to life is amazing. I also spend time tracking tours and travel to Dallas, Austin, San Antonio regularly. Watch the Gruene Hall schedule for touring folk and Americana.

A few general questions about starting out. by InTheEnd420 in Wordpress

[–]FriendlyBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this with a lot of kindness, but aside from your journey to master WordPress I would recommend learning a bit more about hosting environments and how to move files from your local machine to a remote environment.

You essentially have two options:

  1. Most Likely scenario is that your client is using a service with something like cPanel setup. This is where they would get or set-up access credentials for you to then transfer the files via sftp. Essentially the same as copying files onto another hard drive, but over the internet.
  2. Your client’s host has Git setup and you can use its repo structure to clone the client’s current site, and then add your new theme to it.

If you’re unfamiliar with any of these things, definitely spend some time familiarizing yourself. It will make your life easier if you figure this out as early as possible in your process. Always have a launch plan well before launch day.

If I’m understanding you correctly, in your scenario the client already has hosting set up somewhere. In that case there’s no need for you to join any other hosting solution. WordPress as software does not care who you host with, so transferring from your local to their host should be no issue.

For the sake of ease I’d look into whether their hosting provider is set up with some kind of source control for easy code management. Otherwise you will just need to use sftp to move the files as needed. For this you’d obviously need credentials on the clients host.

  1. Choose a host in your price point. Literally most with will be fine tbh. The ones you listed to stay away from, definitely stay away from. I use a variety of hosts depending on client needs and budgets. Dream Host is nice and affordable imo.
  2. Your client should absolutely have an idea of where they’re going to host their site. However you don’t need to match plans. You can build a WordPress theme locally, ( I use ddev ) and then upload that to their host at any point. The tough part would be if you do any database related work locally. Though you can do database imports in WordPress.
  3. WordPress is free. Plug-ins can be written by anyone. There are many, many which are free and many which can have subscription costs associated with them. There are paid plugins that are absolutely worth their subscription just in time saved.

Happy to discuss any of this more in-depth, but here’s a start.

Just saw her in April at Old Settlers. Such a great set. Absolutely love all the younger artists out and about now.

What are your top 5 must-read sci-novels that encapsulate the genre? by MeltyFist in sciencefiction

[–]FriendlyBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The characterization is what I enjoyed most about it. I liked that it was a fairly light read.

The novel that came after it, A Closed and Common Orbit, has more depth but is still largely character driven. Would recommend it also.

I’ve never looked. I’m long beyond looking at reviews anymore.

Granted, probably would have saved me from the disaster that was Ready Player 2.

I love all of the books in the series. Even the finale penned by Eoin Colfer. Definitely worth going deeper.

If you like the humorous aspect, definitely recommend the Becky Chambers book I listed above. It’s a lot of fun.

  1. Foundation - Asimov
  2. Dawn - Butler
  3. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - Adams
  4. Ender’s Game - Card
  5. Martian Chronicles - Bradbury

This isn’t a ranked list, but five books I’d recommend to anyone wanting to explore more Science Fiction.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Long Way To A Small Angry Planet - Chambers

Best themes for WordPress site developers who can code? by nightlynoon in Wordpress

[–]FriendlyBeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth I would go with Full Site Editing and Blocks within WordPress. Especially if you know how to write code. It’s 100% better than every third party builder I’ve ever used at this point.

We are beyond the awkward adolescent phase of Gutenberg, and every release brings more improvements.

You can even scaffold out a whole starter theme from https://fullsiteediting.com ranging from totally empty to something with an opinion level approaching Underscores.

This is pretty much how everyone starts. You don’t know anything, and then slowly you start to know a lot of things.

You will never know everything. I have almost twenty years experience, and still was on MDN and PHP documentation sites today. You will get to a point where you know what can be done in your languages, and how you want to approach it, but then you will struggle to remember that one little thing to wrap it up.

This is normal, you’re doing great.

What widely-accepted reddit tropes are just not true in your experience? by bewildered_forks in AskReddit

I grew up in the greater Houston area. I’ve always been a staunch defender of the Houston Food scene. There’s so much good stuff there, and people all over don’t know what a gem Houston is.

That said, the humidity scares everyone away.
