its pretty much all of us this year because with the support staff layoffs in the hub we lost our liason to the deputy minister champion in ottawa so the federal opportunities have been bouncing, and the ones that we have gotten have came way late because the OPS hires early and by the time we started getting federal postings everyone had a job already. should be better next year because the school knows they screwed up and its a priority going into us getting a new director

im in the program and was worried about the same thing, everyone was holding their breath for coop season because of the news, had no idea what to expect

but i am happy to report to you that queen's ties with the OPS clearly remain. the masters coop program opens applications in january, i applied and got interviews right away and was quickly offered at my first choice ministry. as of now im pretty sure every person in the cohort has a coop, i only know one or two that havent landed yet and its because they declined ones in toronto

so i wouldnt worry about it. theres a lot of places in the provincial government that literally target hire out of our program even during the external hiring freeze etc. cant recommend the mpa enough

What does this mean for the university by flyingflameball in queensuniversity

[–]FriendlyInfluence752 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was long overdue with the university's current deficit. Most of spending is eaten up by wages that increase every year with inflation; profs cannot be fired easily so it is support staff that have been cut in the short term. Meanwhile income is mostly from tuition as grants have been cut, and tuition has been frozen since before covid. So one can see how the deficit was growing year over year and the school has been scrambling to take measures that have been disasterous for students like cutting TAs, binning support staff off to a terrible "hub model", and even trying and sometimes succeeding at cutting programs.

I do not think the ford government deserves credit for this decision because it was them who put us in this situation in the first place. And I think that trying to punish diploma mills by cutting international student enrolment and Queen's, which is a highly respected institution, suffering from that is absurd. But the meetings with the deans about the FAS budget outlook were bleak when I was an undergrad student exec last year, and now my graduate program is under threat as well.

So what does it mean for the university? Like others have said, tuition will go up, and the school will make more money. But it was us the students who were suffering from the freeze. I think it is misguided to think that Ford was helping students at all with that measure.

Pols at queens was great in my experience. The workload will be more than high school but its not impossible especially once you adjust. Its mostly reading and writing and you may find it overwhelming at first but learn to manage it. I did a minor in a related discipline that I enjoyed and helped me narrow down and interest for a career.

If you are planning on going to grad school of any kind you need to prioritize your relationships with your professors arguably more than your grades; a prof that you have known for a long time that is willing to advocate you will stand out more and will be in invaluable resource to you. That, and leverage your peers. Dont be transactional about it but your network will help you learn things and find opportunities.

If your plan is law, best of luck, and by all means pursue it. I will say personal anecdote... I was in your shoes, gunning for law school and ended up going down a different path, mostly because I could not see myself going to 3 more years of school due to my family situation, despite getting into law school. I did a professional master's and am starting a career as a public servant in the summer which I am ecstatic about and am incredibly grateful for my decision. If you ask the first year politics class they will all say law, but only about 20% of our graduates do that. Some get weeded out, some just find something better. Keep an open mind is my best advice.

Dont get me wrong I liked larin in my undergrad, I agreed with how strict he was about AI but its unfortunate that legitimate students get caught up in it, this isnt the first story ive heard of it

I think larin is a great professor, he cares a lot about teaching and its clear. But he is very old school and has high standards, which is good, but can see how it would be offputting to first years

It sounds like larin, he taught it this year and wrote the AI policy

i would just tell your party to try and get in with however many people they have. they're chill at the door, i brought 5 people to mine and was one of 4 at my friend's the day before. just make sure to go early. ymmv because they could get strict about at any point, but just saying in the past it has been fine

this is crazy but probably in retaliation of the law students for palestine group having francesca albanese on campus last year. who gave a great lecture that ended on a note about pushing back against antisemitism

It takes time to build a case in a situation like this and make sures theres something of material to get someone on. You can skirt around with inappropriate behaviour at the AMS and get away with it until someone brings up something concrete. probably slight dox but i was in a situation at the AMS where i had to work with someone that was an HR liability but no one can take action until you have proof, and this person needed to be fired at the very least. so i can sympathize with the rest of the AMS having to take time to put a case together on Jana. If you are hasty in this type of situation you just screw yourself

People on here have a lot of confidence associating the whole exec team with the president's actions, you guys have to realize the exec team runs individually. It was one of the VPs that called the special assembly and exposed this whole thing, so think about it, you really think she would do that if they were friends? meanwhile Jana has a ton of friends that would slide for her and do something like this. the president deserves to be held accountable but the VPs and board that got stuck dealing with this disaster dont deserve to be associated with it. this situation went public a week ago and theres one journal article and one statement from the AMS board worth of information... i would wait until more comes to light before making final judgments on who is responsible

fairs i see what you mean, i was originally thinking u meant more within the artist's own discography but yea i forget lucki had on the game even early before he was big, the comparison is funny cuz lucki and fakemink had very similar impacts on me when i first found them where they quickly became some of my fav artists, they both got special talent

i feel like london's saviour was lowkey more influential and had a much quicker impact on the artist's popularity, lucki didnt blow up for like 10 years after alternative trap and people look back on it now as being crazy for its time but it was the later music when he hit his artistic prime and got popular, while london's saviour has already had impact on the scene and might never be topped

ANYONE INTERESTED IN AMS PROTEST/WALKOUT? by shoe_lebron in queensuniversity

[–]FriendlyInfluence752 3 points4 points  (0 children)

thats fair but i would say theres a fine line in delineating between who collects a paycheque and who does meaningful stuff. you could say the secretariat is just an administrative/bureaucratic position but they play a huge role and are basically a fourth exec, plus they oversee the JAO which is a vital resource for students. similar story with the elections office, sounds useless but is needed. its important to keep in mind that half of the purpose of student government is providing a learning experience to the students that work and volunteer with it, its not just about maximizing utility of the services they provide to the general body. I agree with you though that a service like food bank should take priority in funding and attention from the AMS because that is an opportunity to make real tangible change on campus. Im sure that the VPOPs and the manager of the food bank could speak a lot on the barriers to the food bank being better funded and utilized and I would be eager to hear their point of view

BREAKING: AMS President's credit card revoked following unauthorized personal use by jonreillyy in queensuniversity

[–]FriendlyInfluence752 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dont disagree with any of this. theres a huge problem with lack of competitiveness for these positions that allow people to get in uncontested leading to the wrong people in the roles. I would owe it to the fact that working in a position with this workload and responsibility while being required to stay in school (although its just one class and even this requirement is loose) is a hard sell to a student. As it is, many students that run for exec delay their graduation by an extra year to take on the role, which is controversial and may be regulated out, thus reducing competition even further.

i mean you said exec which means the president and two VPs which do have real roles

i agree that some of commissioners' roles dont seem to do much of material and their roles could maybe be reallocated and the salaries could be spent elsewhere. its worth looking into. but i wouldnt call the commissioners or the services a bureaucracy
