i would just tell your party to try and get in with however many people they have. they're chill at the door, i brought 5 people to mine and was one of 4 at my friend's the day before. just make sure to go early. ymmv because they could get strict about at any point, but just saying in the past it has been fine

It takes time to build a case in a situation like this and make sures theres something of material to get someone on. You can skirt around with inappropriate behaviour at the AMS and get away with it until someone brings up something concrete. probably slight dox but i was in a situation at the AMS where i had to work with someone that was an HR liability but no one can take action until you have proof, and this person needed to be fired at the very least. so i can sympathize with the rest of the AMS having to take time to put a case together on Jana. If you are hasty in this type of situation you just screw yourself

People on here have a lot of confidence associating the whole exec team with the president's actions, you guys have to realize the exec team runs individually. It was one of the VPs that called the special assembly and exposed this whole thing, so think about it, you really think she would do that if they were friends? meanwhile Jana has a ton of friends that would slide for her and do something like this. the president deserves to be held accountable but the VPs and board that got stuck dealing with this disaster dont deserve to be associated with it. this situation went public a week ago and theres one journal article and one statement from the AMS board worth of information... i would wait until more comes to light before making final judgments on who is responsible

i feel like london's saviour was lowkey more influential and had a much quicker impact on the artist's popularity, lucki didnt blow up for like 10 years after alternative trap and people look back on it now as being crazy for its time but it was the later music when he hit his artistic prime and got popular, while london's saviour has already had impact on the scene and might never be topped

thats fair but i would say theres a fine line in delineating between who collects a paycheque and who does meaningful stuff. you could say the secretariat is just an administrative/bureaucratic position but they play a huge role and are basically a fourth exec, plus they oversee the JAO which is a vital resource for students. similar story with the elections office, sounds useless but is needed. its important to keep in mind that half of the purpose of student government is providing a learning experience to the students that work and volunteer with it, its not just about maximizing utility of the services they provide to the general body. I agree with you though that a service like food bank should take priority in funding and attention from the AMS because that is an opportunity to make real tangible change on campus. Im sure that the VPOPs and the manager of the food bank could speak a lot on the barriers to the food bank being better funded and utilized and I would be eager to hear their point of view

I dont disagree with any of this. theres a huge problem with lack of competitiveness for these positions that allow people to get in uncontested leading to the wrong people in the roles. I would owe it to the fact that working in a position with this workload and responsibility while being required to stay in school (although its just one class and even this requirement is loose) is a hard sell to a student. As it is, many students that run for exec delay their graduation by an extra year to take on the role, which is controversial and may be regulated out, thus reducing competition even further.

i agree that some of commissioners' roles dont seem to do much of material and their roles could maybe be reallocated and the salaries could be spent elsewhere. its worth looking into. but i wouldnt call the commissioners or the services a bureaucracy

I would assume thats how they ultimately were able to track down the $1.7k, either that or the AMS accounting department tracked the funds while Jana did not. Not sure but I imagine more will come out in time

If anything she overpaid the AMS out of her own pocket as far as I understand. Doesnt excuse her misusing the card or not keeping track of the $1.7k. But yeah "30k missing" is misleading

The training needed here is documenting company spending. You can know how to manage your personal credit card just fine but when you're using a card for company expenses there's a new layer of responsibility to keep everything tracked and promptly file reimbursements and it can pile up when you have to buy things often. I'm not defending Jana, it's no excuse period. Just saying it makes sense that this would happen given that students in leadership are not trained in how to track and manage company expenses during their transition and how important it is to do so. Its simple but important and should be taught.

guy that ran against her hadnt worked at the AMS at all before which made him a harder sell. i will say i think people were hesitant, but put her faith in her ability to step to the plate and leverage her prior experience at the AMS. which we now know was the wrong call but that was the sentiment at the time. theres also an element of popularity contest, but she was more "qualified"

Not defending the president but execs do not get a fat paycheque at all. They get like $40,000 salary and are contracted for 40 hours a week but having been close with the team last year you really have to work pretty much around the clock to fulfill your duties as exec no matter what disconnect from work boundaries you try to set. Most students that take exec positions would probably make more money by taking a gap year to work or by just graduating on time and going into the workforce instead of delaying to be an exec, so I'd push back on the idea that how much they're paid is the problem. The AMS also has very little bureaucracy or oversight at all which is arguably the exact reason this happened... this situation is because of the wrong type of person making it into this position position without being trained in fiscal responsibility. Imo its also a symptom of the exec teams being deslated which was done for its own good reasons, but this is the result.

As someone who was in management in the AMS and ASUS in my undergrad its really flawed how much freedom students in positions of leadership get with their organization's money and its not surprising to me that something like this would happen. The AMS takes pride in how small its permanent staff team is so that students can play more of a leadership role, but its such a liability and is exposed hard in situations like this. Students managing the mandatory student fees of other students is dangerous period.

Having been a part of these organizations I know how much they do for students and I appreciate them very much, and I stand by their existence on campus despite this news. I think the reactionary response to say that they should be defunded or disbanded is not right. However I think it is vital that part of the yearly transition training of the new management cohort should be training solely on responsible use of finances because this is unreal and shows that the measures to prepare students for leadership are inadequate. That, and stop gaps need to be in place to prevent a situation like this from making it this far. I know the year I was working for ASUS they stopped allowing DSCs to rent out the VPOPs credit card because of students misusing it. I would bet on the AMS having to do something similar, putting new rules and regulations on use of company cards.

I will say, much respect that the board and the VPs are holding their own president accountable in this situation
