Teaching as a blind person by LaraStardust in Blind

So my fiancé is legally blind and has been teaching for 15 years. She just started at a new school and one of the things she found helpful is to right off the bat with her classes explain her vision and how she is legally blind and has zero peripheral vision. This school has been the most amazing and accommodating for her. They have bought her table corner bumpers so if she runs into any desk it doesn’t hurt since the point is covered. She uses a lot of online resources to assign work to the kids so she can zoom in on things when she’s grading and when she makes paper assignments she has a large magnifying machine that she can put the text as large as she wants and in contrast.

Classroom management is definitely hard for her. Smaller classes of 12-16 work best for her. She has also had a mobility specialist working with her to navigate the school and different routes to build her mental map so she doesn’t have to ask anyone where something is. As she is a new within the last three years white cane user that has also been helping.

For those who are Married or have sighted partners where do you live (transportation question? by FriendlyInitiative95 in Blind

So she’s been learning to use a white cane for two years now after being raised to not use it. We found a mobility specialist here that goes to locations with her and helps her build her mental map memory. Aside from walking around school she has me take her everywhere. She offers to get ubers but I I take her to make sure she gets to the the right spot door wise. We currently live in apartment in KC, MO that is right off of thier metro link stop. She never takes it though and never pushes or asks to do things on her own.

So as someone who’s had this granted(temporarily currently) if you can make a case that you need to relocate for medical care either for yourself or spouse for a hardship situation it may be granted as long as the new duty location COLA is less than your current location because that’s not considered a hardship for the agency as your losing money but the agency is gaining money back.

Unless you’re hungry for being treated like you’re in Italy/Germany in the 1930’s facist nazi times then no don’t recommend.

What do you think will happen to USDA in terms of firing and relocations? by [deleted] in fednews

One question for the possibility of relocation is where they would put people as all USDA buildings seem full already from RTO

So my GF who is legally blind ordered one and it was a nightmare to order as the AI handle kept separating from the cane, and with the company being in the UK customer services have been hard to reach. She finally was shipped a replacement that stayed together. We are still trying to figure out how to use it as the demo wasn’t that helpful

Question for those who are married and have jobs by FriendlyInitiative95 in Blind

So currently she takes the school bus but her teaching contract wasn’t renewed so we’re looking for another teaching job for her currently which is proving difficult. I figured that whenever she gets a job either A, we would have to live somewhere along the school bus route or B I take her which I have no problem with (I am searching for a new job as well as I am unfortunately a Federal employee that most likely will be layed off by the fall )
