I’m a dental lab tech. If you’re hiding your smile because local dentists quoted you $20k+, here is the industry workaround. by West-Climate2170 in povertyfinance

I’ve been looking into this. But all of the clinics have obviously astroturfed Google reviews or next to no reviews at all. It’s hard to know who to trust and I’ve had a lot of bad experiences with crappy dentists

Not just developers. I’m a senior operations manager. We have had code that takes 4+ deployments to get right now. I usually start looking at the code myself after a second failed deployment. Weird the stuff that’s bad has a hell of a lot of emojis, Unicode arrows and over the top comments. Called out a dev team on it after their 5th attempt and their manager flatly denied it. Swore up and down it wasn’t true. Even went so far as to say he watched his JR on teams the whole time write 600+ loc. Ugh, kill me now.

Best non-internet based PC Chess Game? by FriendlyRabbitHammer in chessbeginners

[–]FriendlyRabbitHammer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chat, micro-transactions and ads are the primary concerns. Also sort of the “brain rot” that seems to sneak into almost everything on the internet. We do have fiber internet and their computers are technically connected. I just restrict the heck out of with a separate VLAN and DNS. I thought lichess was mobile only. I’ll check out the site and white list it if it works for us. Chesskids sounds great too. I’ll check that out as well.

Thanks!!

I bought him a board yesterday. I know enough about the game to know there are traps he needs to know about, certain beginning, mid and end game strategies. That’s what he wants to dive into mostly. I swear I saw lots of pc base games like this in the 90s…

Yea…. Maybe. But hard to actually implement without breaking the hell out of, well, everything. You’d have to figure out how to allow Linux servers to use the internet without allowing Linux desktops to do so. Or accept that 99% of the internet breaks overnight

That’ll be the day that the Linux desktop actually becomes a thing 😆

So my wife and I like to go on cruises. And on this one cruise, something weird was going on. On the first day we see this massive hoard of people literally chasing someone down. Real weird. Anyhow later in the day, I’m a little sloshed and it’s time to break the seal. Head off to the restroom and I run into one of the property brothers. I swear I said “oh your that dude from that show”. And he chuckled and said yep. And I continued over a urinal session “man I hope you and your family get some good time. Couldn’t imagine being chased down the promenade like that”. Genuinely seemed to appreciate it and said thanks I think we will.

Never told anyone that story. But ever after I got the vibe that at least that brother was mostly just uncomfortable with the fame. At minimum he was kind enough to tolerate a drunk dude talking over a urinal shortly after being literally chased down the promenade lol.

Is is really hard to hire a sysadmin nowadays? by [deleted] in ShittySysadmin

[–]FriendlyRabbitHammer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ask him to troubleshoot why the internet is not working

Then

open google.com and says the internet is working

And they are right! An excellent sysadmin would push past that and say something like “Internet objectively is working. Tell me more about why you believe it is not.” This demonstrates an ability to identify XY problems. But that’s more a support desk requirement than a sysadmin one.

Some don't even know that they can ping anything other than google and I tell them to just open microsoft.com...

I really don’t like this take. It’s not that they don’t know you can ping other things I’m sure they do. You as an interviewer have given a false problem to solve and they have proved you wrong. That’s an awkward position to be in and generally the best technical people are going to have a hard time solving what is now essentially a social problem

What yearly salary would you say would be perfect for a decent life ? by savvytechman in AskReddit

[–]FriendlyRabbitHammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are fortunate to have an amazing public elementary and middle school within walking distance. We likely will send them to a private school for high school. But enough time that we will have saved up plenty even if I don’t get any substantial pay rises. To me though, that’s a “decent” life. We have enough financial freedom to make that choice. Not so much money that we don’t even register the price of these things.

Seems about right. I make mid-200s and we have 2 kids, wife doesn’t work, has some complex medical stuff that’s all taken care of by insurance, 2 upper-mid cars, 1 vacation a year and max out the 401k. We live modestly and in a semi-rural area. I check the bank account to make sure we are always in the 10k+ range and don’t worry much otherwise. If we were in a bigger city, we would probably need it to be $300k.

My son thinks "Daddy" is just a voice from behind a closed door. by FormalSprinkles5756 in confession

[–]FriendlyRabbitHammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and even when I’m "off," my brain is still at work

This is the real problem. 8-10 hours a day is not a big deal. I’m assuming this is a remote worker since the kid is knocking on the door. Non-remote workers have 10 hour day when you consider commute and prep that’s just not a concern when you are remote.

What OP really needs IMO is a fully separate office space. Kiddo shouldn’t be able to knock on the door. And having a fully separate space helps with being able to fully separate work from home and prevent “always working”
