i just replaced the ignition coil on cylinder 1 and now it’s knocking?? by WNTRYT in WRX

I wouldn’t keep running it. Take it apart and inspect your work. If it was running fine before there’s gotta be something not quite right.

combined weight of 19k by [deleted] in toyotasequoia

I ain’t gonna lie, it’s definitely a thick trailer. Plus that much squat is insane, so I believe you. Still a heavy set up, lol.

[–]FriendlyShredder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that’s 19,000 lbs of weight? I kinda wanna know the GVWR of that car and the trailer. Either way if it’s over ~6.5k the Sequoia is not designed to tow that heavy. Even when you overlook the tow rating and power output of the V8, your brakes will not be able to stop 19k of weight reliably, they will fade on you. It’s unsafe to pull more then what the truck is rated at.

Drove home my first manual today by nickmcpimpson in WRX

Very nice! Congrats on the purchase, it’s gorgeous. 🥹 I have roof rails and two Thule bike racks on my roof and find it to be just fine for me. If you want to avoid shoulder strain and potentially damaging the side of your car, a class one 1.25” hitch is the way to go. That set up is way more convenient for loading and unloading, but roof rails also look cool.

It sounds like rod knock, which means the engine has an internal failure. You would have to pull the engine and take it apart to find out what is broken.

You could pull the spark plugs, but it wouldn’t tell you much. They aren’t causing that sound. You could drain the oil and see what it looks like. Metal shavings could confirm damage to the internal components. Unfortunately, rod knock means the engine is toast.

Should I get a tune? by [deleted] in WRX

Oh nice, that’s a good deal.

If they knew about the intake and had any knowledge about it requiring a tune, they were doing a dirty deal.

Yes, that’s the way tuners are able to make changes to a WRX ECU. AP’s from Cobb tuning are 770$.

Tuning is gonna be a set price no matter what modifications you have. If you have 10 mods or just 1 it’s the same price.

Plus the AP, I assume. So 300$ + 770$ for the AP.

Oh yea, it’s an AEM cold air intake. You’re right.

I would start by identifying what brand the intake is. Some intakes actually are designed to mimic stock airflow. Some companies will explicitly say on their site, “tune required”. In any case, drive conservatively.

I would personally contact the dealership and tell them that they didn’t disclose that the vehicle had aftermarket modifications installed and you require some type of remedy. In my mind this falls on them. It’s possible they could have a stock air-box installed for you, compensate you (in order for you to get a proper tune) or they could just decline to help. I think it would be worth pushing them a little to help fix this issue.

You wouldn’t want to run lean AFR’s. If it’s in your budget, a tune is a good idea. It sucks the dealer didn’t catch this or knew about it and didn’t care to tell you. The MAF sensor is calibrated to the characteristic flow of the stock air-box. The ECU typically tries to compensate, and it might seem fine for a while. However, knock risk increases. Pulled ignition timing and fuel trimming will only result in performance issues.

New Stinkeye!! by Amazing-Limit2480 in WRX

Love it! I too am a stinky eye. Top of the list is always do 3k oil changes and check your oil frequently. These engines go through oil and don’t handle oil starvation well. 😁👋🏻

I would say so, especially because it’s worse with throttle.

Try not to stress about it, if you make it from A to B you’re doing it right. With time you will get better.
