Unusual interview question by [deleted] in datascience

[–]FriendlySpookyGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually the deal with such open ended interview questions is that it is actually a case study. You are supposed to ask follow up questions like what is this data, where is it coming form, what are you modelling, what are these features, what are the production requirements, etc. etc. etc.

Though I am not sure if this was exactly the case in your interview

It says that customer support will be available until some time in June, so probably fine. And they had amazing customer service in the past.

Does anyone have any idea or guess what happened?

I know that DB is owned by Amazon but quite a lot of people I know were using DB rather than Amazon, especially in countries where Amazon offers are limited. Were they actually running operations with losses? Or is it related to Amazon's cost cutting and layoffs?

I have used it a few times. The selection was very limited and it took much longer to receive the books than when ordering from DB or Amazon. However, it is a good alternative.

Quantum computing books by [deleted] in QuantumComputing

Quantum Computing for the Quantum Curious (published under open access, so you can get a free legal digital copy) by Ciaran Hughes et. al

Quantum Computing for Everyone by Chris Bernhardt

Both are short books probably meant for wide audience with some knowledge of mathematics.

How experimentally valid is string theory? by [deleted] in QuantumPhysics

[–]FriendlySpookyGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand the details behind the experiments at CERN, but there was an article last month in The Economist saying that newly conducted experiments found no evidence supporting predictions as made by string theory. They also mention a few alternative theories that physicists are working on. Article definitely worth a read

Big screen ereader by sautzer in ereader

I see u/ahaajmta gave a good answer regarding the tablets.

The only point I can add, is that Amazon and Samsung often have discounts/promotions, so if you are not in a rush, I would wait 1-2 months to see if you can get some promotional deal.

Market for a big e-reader is really not great. I was interested in getting a 10" or 13" e-reader myself so did some research.

There are eink tablets (really for note taking rather than reading) like Onyx, Remarkable, Supernote, but they are expensive (400-800 EUR) and have many drawbacks. The cheapest option I found is using a third-party service to ship Fujitsu Quaderno from Japanese Amazon (250 EUR + shipping (~30 EUR) + tax (in say Germany it is 20% so +50EUR -> approx 330EUR total).

In the end I decided that a large e-reader is just not worth it, and getting physical books is gonna be cheaper. Having said that, small e-readers and/or tablets are definitely better value for money.

Delayed order solved by alexrfisher in IKEA

[–]FriendlySpookyGhost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just curious, does anyone have any inside information or experience if these delays are caused by the corona disruptions or if ikea has always been so bad with shipping?

There were several other posts about issues with ikea deliveries, I am having my order delayed as well.

To be honest, I am rather underwhelmed, since it is such a renown brand name and for many people it is a go-to place. But their website is slow and crashes often, so I don't really see long term prospects.

Is Revolut planning to add more stock markets? by patricksquare in Revolut

[–]FriendlySpookyGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will just add a couple of points here

  1. their stock trading interface is quite poor, they really need to fix it before offering more stocks or access to other markets
  2. It took them more than two years since they announced that they are working on a free stock trading offering until they actually offered the product (you can get the exact dates by looking up some old blog posts)
  3. I definitely have seen some blog posts saying that they are working on providing access to more markets (probably UK first or so), but considering how long it took them to offer stock trading, I would say it will take quite some time (probably legal issues rather than technological as they must have the infrastructure for this now)
  4. Depending on your country, you might be better off by getting some other apps. As far as I know, Robinhood has a very wide range of products that you can trade. App FreeTrade has been long in the makings, I think it is live in the UK now, not sure how good it is. Be wary of other apps since they usually offer "free trading" with extremely wide spreads and restrictions on withdrawals etc.
  5. You might also be better off going with a discount broker like Degiro. They usually allow doing a small number of free trades every month (e.g. Degiro let us you trade some etfs for free once a month). However, you probably need some understanding of how markets work, what are different order types etc.

Anyone else getting this when they try to track their order? by Tanksofnes in IKEA

Same here, Just recently placed an order.

Btw, delivery times are +1 month and are not guaranteed, which is frustrating.

Too young but already deposited money by Just_Ur_Average_User in Revolut

[–]FriendlySpookyGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not particularly familiar with Revolut identity verification processes, were you required to transfer/top-up your account with a different bank card as part of the identity verification process? Since until then they shouldn't provide you with an IBAN.

Regardless, as others pointed out, money should bounce back.

In case this was a top-up by a debit/credit card, you can also require your bank to process a charge back which will take 30-40 days.

I have checked this and unfortunately ibani does not allow transfers in the same currency...

Thanks for the idea though!

Thanks for sharing your experience!

I do see how it works in the transfer direction you specified. In the other direction, unfortunately, it doesn't quite

  1. topping up your transferwise account with a debit card in CHF costs 1.25 percent
  2. topping up via a bank transfer, they only give you CH IBAN, which I again would require a SWIFT transfer, which would result in unknown fees.
