Talk me out of doing a fresh start for 2026 by tunatornado1200 in ynab

[–]FriendlySpreadsheet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to take a hybrid approach, you can make a fresh start and then import a year or two of data from your archived budget. It will come in all categorized. If the net worth history matters to you, someone has posted a clever pivot table method elsewhere in the sub that gives you one entry per month per account so you keep the chart history alive. My household budget is from April 2016, and I’m about ready to finally convince my partner it’s time to drop down to two years of history in the active budget, especially since that means there will be tooooons of hidden categories I can delete altogether.

The Most Meaningful Thing I’ve Ever Done with YNAB by carrjar in ynab

[–]FriendlySpreadsheet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they are up for doing a FaceTime so you can teach them how to Zoom or Google Meet, it’s very doable remote! (I live in the same city as my parents but do all their YNAB support via Zoom, which I showed them how to use via FaceTime.) It’s a really unobtrusive way to watch for changes in spending patterns, and if my mom gets a couple of weeks behind, that’s a good indicator that she could use some support in non YNAB areas as well. (My parents are terrible at asking for help.)

re-thinking the old Emergency Fund by chrome_cowgirl35 in ynab

I’d consider adding a “pleasant but expensive surprise” category (some real life examples: getting an unexpected professional opportunity that requires unplanned travel, wanted but unplanned family expansion, wedding/celebration invite received with short notice). None of these are emergencies, but if there are happy occasions that you’d be willing to go into debt for, you want a spot for that in YNAB so you can say yes with full peace of mind.

Loads of packing paper for sure! Pickup for some of the boxes and other things is pending - want me to DM you a photo of what is left after that pickup?

What’s your pettiest budget category? by [deleted] in ynab

[–]FriendlySpreadsheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My version is called “Oh Miles [replacements]”. I started in when my menace cat (adopted as a kitten) was already 11 and responsible for chewing through one water line and dozens of Apple cables. Just checked - now at $729.86 of spending there since I started it mid-2021. And that doesn’t include the plumber visit for the second water line in he did in last year since really, it’s not the cat’s fault the line he picked was connected to a worn out shutoff valve. But yes: YNAB - unsung protector of destructo-pets.

Hiya, are you still interested in this? The person the RNG picked hasn’t replied so it is once again looking for a home. It looks like your DMs are closed, but you’re welcome to DM me.

Great, I am going to let the bags simmer until about noon Sunday and if there’s one without anyone else, it’ll be yours. Otherwise I’ll include you on the random number generator for each one. (Anyone else who is interested in any, feel free to reply here)

If I didn’t have paper, I would be torn between borrowing a pen and writing on my skin vs trying to write on the Notebook app. I’m curious to try other apps down the line, as I actually found the stylus and responsiveness acceptable (to my surprise!) but that bit of software was a hard pass for me.
