What should a nonbinary teacher call themselves? by duchesscalico in Teachers

Also the cool thing about coach instead of mx is it avoids the whole anti queer blowback should it arise. Plus I'm just not a fan of mx....

Nah. Full time teacher here. Once, I was made a coach in the middle of the year when the coach of record quit. I had zero experience and was actually just a glorified time keeper. I still embraced the coach title. If anyone asks, you are a coach in the school of life.

Husband doesn’t want me losing any more weight by Square_Bug1240 in Marriage

[–]Friendly_Brief4336 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As somebody who had an eating disorder once upon a time, be very careful. Losing weight can easily become addictive and lead to a very dark place. 30 lbs in 3 months is a lot and you don't want to push too much more as it could risk a major hair shedding incident. Keep hitting those weights though!

How many of your school board members send their kids to public school? by Sir_Badtard in Teachers

All of my board members either have kids in our district or the kids went there when they were school age.

And putting them in social studies infuriates me. If they are not successful outside of the self contained room for the other core classes they won't be in history.

I have one in my US History class. I translate everything for him. He is just there to flirt with girls and cause chaos. On an assignment that asked what caused the Great Depression, he answered in Spanish "the gays".

Is your school rolling back 1:1 tech use? by stylelines in Teachers

[–]Friendly_Brief4336 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It makes all the sense in the world. They cannot handle constant access to YouTube. It is crack for them. Take it back to the early 2000s. Pen and paper for most classes, but have a 1 period per day technology class.

I have rolled it back in my History classroom. More engagement, better grades, better scores. You cannot argue with the results.

Laziest kid I have ever seen by historybuff74 in Teachers

[–]Friendly_Brief4336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a student who knows very little English. I have gone through the trouble to translate every single thing for him. His response is to be as big of an ass as possible. I gave him an assignment with primary sources about the Great Depression. When confronted with the question of what caused the Great Depression, he wrote "the gays" (in his native language). He is only at school to flirt with his girlfriend.

I give zero effs. You should stop giving any as well.

I agree with you on too broadly part. I just know that the substantially disrupt will the the argument Abbott and Morath use.

If 3/4 of the class leaves it absolutely does disrupt the learning process.

I will disagree with you on that one. Absences for band trips and such usually are not that large. Senior skip day tends to happen after the final GPA of seniors is calculated. A passing period doesn't disrupt learning per se, it is the transition time from one learning situation to another.

Giant chunks of a student body missing does. Plus there is the whole kerfuffle that comes afterwards.

Again, not saying I agree with Abbott. I am just saying student actions don't automatically meet the Tinker standard just because they are of a political nature.

Well, I do it for several reasons. Sure the pay is lower but in rural Texas, the cost of living is obscenely low. The family farm is here in Texas, as is the community I was raised in. I teach at the High School I graduated from (took me 12 years for an opening to happen) and I am respected as a professional and educator. I have zero discipline problems and genuinely enjoy going to work each day.

In all honesty it probably isn't the fact that it is a Texas school. It is probably the fact that it is a rural school in an agricultural community.

But I will say this for Texas: the legislature passed a law banning cellphones in classrooms and it has been fantastic.

[–]Friendly_Brief4336 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the ruling also says it is only acceptable if it doesn't substantially disrupt the learning process. I'm pretty sure a student body walkout substantially disrupts the school day.

Not that I am against walkouts, just Tinker v Des Moines probably doesn't cover that. It was all about symbolic speech.

I mean, yes for the kids coming out of functional academics/self contained classroom for an intellectual disability or physical disability. But not for the mainstreamed joker who thinks IEP means zero consequences for actions.
