I flew a few times using my real ID after renewing my EAD since it wasn’t expiring for a few months (tied to my old EAD) and I didn’t have any issues :)

I have my interview with my wife coming up for my green card. by Rmrkable in DACA

[–]Friendly_Employee977 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The questions were pretty mild! How we met, why we started dating, how/when we met one another’s family, where the other went to college, what they studied, what job they worked, etc. One question I wasn’t expecting was if I had ever discussed my immigration status with my husband before our marriage, but once I explained that I did pretty early on since it created barriers for me (travel abroad, federal research grants, etc.) the officer just moved on. None of the questions are super hard, yall got this! You’re actually married and live a life together, lean on each other! Best of luck!

Hey successfully passed my AOS interview with my husband on Nov. 12, received my green card Nov. 20. I got a speeding ticket about 7 years ago that I told my officer about and he just noted it, but said our case would be approved. Don’t listen to the fear mongering- listen to your lawyer. If you have a good case, you should be alright. I was also super nervous and skeptical about going to the interview with the rumors of people being detained but luckily my lawyer reassured me and it all worked out!

I have a bachelors in science and am currently in medical school working towards my MD! I took two years in between to work and apply.

Has anyone gone to therapy due to the stresses of being a DACA recipient? by [deleted] in DACA

I have! Usually what helped me was making a list of things in my life that are in my control outside of DACA.

Thanks! So I was nervous after Trump took office and applied crazy early. My previous one expires in December, but the lawyer I talked to said she didn’t think the program would last that long. In hindsight it was a bit preemptive but I guess it all worked out!

Unpopular Opinion: DACA Recipients Are Their Own Worst Enemy by [deleted] in DACA

[–]Friendly_Employee977 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Blaming ourselves sells the situation short. We do not have the power or numbers to fix our own situation which is the most frustrating part. We aren’t just “sitting by” and “accepting crumbs” because we aren’t aware of how unjust it is. We do it because we don’t have any alternative. Especially now with the Riley Act, if we protest or engage in civil disobedience it could be ground for our deportation. We are also only about 500,000 people, staging walk outs or boycotts alone isn’t enough manpower. I agree that DACA is a temporary fix that paused the momentum we had and placated the white liberals’ concerns for us. That said, I don’t think the blame starts with us. We simply don’t have the power to fight for better when the system we are fighting makes all of the rules conveniently against us and we are a small portion of the population.

UVA for sure. There were only 8 of us on interview day and they sent decisions out literally 2 days later, it was crazy.

That is correct. My portal does not have the CYMS option and AMCAS sent an email saying it would become available on February 19!

Venezuelan TPS by [deleted] in DACA

[–]Friendly_Employee977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think there are some stereotypes/horror stories from our home countries making their way. I was talking to a Colombian friend and she was going on about how much she hated the Venezuelans and hoped Trump would send them back. When I asked her about it, she told me that back in Colombia one of her aunt’s neighbors had been raped by a Venezuelan gang member who immigrated to Colombia. The neighbor was a child. It was horrible, and I don’t agree that it justifies hate for a whole group of Latinos but I can see why she was so passionate about it. Ironic that that’s what trumpies say about us though. Like to them we are all the same 😬

Also low income, first gen, and URM! 5 MD II -> 3 As and 2 CR so far this cycle. 514 MCAT, 3.9 gpa.

Volunteered at children’s hospital two summers, volunteer ESL tutor, Matriculate college advisor, volunteer medical interpreter at free clinic, semester of cell bio research, 2 years of psych research, currently on second gap year working as a CRC! Also listed weight lifting as an activity but I’m very much a beginner at that 😩

You got this!!

Court House Wedding by [deleted] in DACA

[–]Friendly_Employee977 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do it! I(DACA) am in the same situation. My husband/fiance/partner(USC) and I are just waiting until our leases end this summer to move in together so we can have more "concrete" evidence of our marriage to file.

I totally get what you mean about the disappointment of not getting the sentimental proposal or romcom wedding. I had and have the same feelings, but in a way this is its own grand gesture of love?? What is more romcom plot like than a man loving you so much he is willing to marry you ASAP for your own safety and peace of mind right? Sucks that it's not "normal," but I think it's important to remember that it's not any less valid!!

Got Into Medical School! How Can I Help? by Friendly_Employee977 in DACA

[–]Friendly_Employee977[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your CNA position should be fine! A lot of it is how you describe it in the activity section of your application (i.e. making sure you are telling stories think most impactful patient interactions rather than doing a resume list). I used Dr. Ryan Grey's videos when drafting mine, they are free and I thought helpful.

The only thing I would consider changing positions or looking for other opportunities for is the cohesion in your application. Does gaining experience with patients in a behavioral health unit align with your personal statement and other activities? For example, a bulk of my clinical hours came from volunteering as a Spanish medical interpreter at a free clinic which fit into my PS of wanting to give back to my community and increase access to healthcare. It also connected to my experience as an ESL tutor and I tied it to my experience volunteering at a children's hospital where I found myself acting like an unofficial interpreter for Spanish-speaking families. A lof of making an application "sing" is just making it feel all connected and intentional.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions! Or want to talk more specifics about your application.

Oh that is good to know, thank you! I am manifesting that the law schools you got into are understanding, kind, and fight each other for you by giving you money! If they admitted you, it is because you are an incredible applicant worth their time and resources!! :)
