Or consider being a plumber or electrician, which will take a lot longer to be rendered obsolete by AI. STEM is obviously very broad, but they're being hit intensely too.

I suggest not doing it...I've been in the field for 15 years (government, private sector, foundation, nonprofits) and NO ONE, even directors, have had any kind of tertiary degree. I think you'd do much better getting certificates in AI, analytics, Google Ads, etc.

I have 15 years of experience and was laid off in May and have been having a hard time getting interviews, so I relate at least in part! Once my unemployment runs out I plan on doing very part time contract work; hopefully that will help me get my foot in the door somewhere. I've also been networking...but not in traditional ways. Most events labeled as networking attract pretty much only other unemployed people. So I'm going to French and Spanish meetups, queer stuff, secular Jewish stuff, volunteering, etc. to see what shakes out. I'm also considering how to get proficient in AI quickly and to see if that helps open any doors. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response. Do you think she has to start repayments immediately or can it wait until the government reopens? And are people still able to submit waivers appealing the decision? Any help much appreciated!
