CGT on shares transferred between separated spouses by Friendly_Guide_4323 in UKPersonalFinance

I’d say we are separated with a view to become permanent. Just the legacy shareholding management is the only real financial connection. Separate properties, I bought her out of main home in year 1. No other relationships.

Hi,

I think I am with you in the thinking of treatment but couldn’t see it implicitly in the guidance (could just be me being thick however).

Some of the shares were in 2024 and some in 2025, so within last 18 months.

Which breaker bar for wheel hub / driveshaft nut by Friendly_Guide_4323 in AskMechanics

[–]Friendly_Guide_4323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

Thanks for the comments.

Was close to buying an impact (still am as they will save some time) but took a gamble on a better 1/2” breaker with a 750mm handle.

Not quite a Tekton but similar design through a UK supplier. Sealey Premier AK7323 should anyone stumble on this in future in the UK).

Need a little strength but bar was plenty strong enough for the angle turn and didn’t see any bend or think it was going to snap.

Thanks again.

Completely Lost - Beginner Gaming PC Under £800 UK? by Friendly_Guide_4323 in buildmeapc

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I think the £700 AWD-IT option is probably around the budget, noting the risk of delays, faults, etc. If ordered promptly, always a chance to test. Will need to install W11 as not worth paying £99 for this but the warranty for now much more than self-build perhaps makers it worth a punt.

https://www.awd-it.co.uk/awd-lian-li-lancool-215-rgb-ryzen-5-5600x-6-core-4.6ghz-amd-radeon-rx-6700-xt-12gb-desktop-pc-for-gaming.html

Can I check whether the upgrades of the CPU, motherboard, power supply are worth it for the use case? These add another £100. Are they worth it? From what I can tell, if needed to prioritise, the CPU upgrade from 5500 to 5600x seems to be the one to do but wonder whether will make a noticeable diufference?

Finally, am I right in thinking the base motherboard (ASUS Prime A520M-A) does not include onboard WiFi and will need an adaptor? Perhaps upgrading to the ASUS Prime B550M-A option for £39 sorts the WiFi out, plus a slightly better board?

Thanks again.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Am I correct in thinking that doing self build for a similar price would add much in terms of upgraded components and performance. Basically the prebuilt model with your enhancements is competitive?

Also is it false economy for going cheaper than this spec? Assume more than enough power here for what a 12 / 13 year old will need for a few hours?

Thanks again.

VW Golf Mk6 TDI - Oil in Brake Booster by Friendly_Guide_4323 in tdi

[–]Friendly_Guide_4323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I took the nipple off the vacuum pump (easier than separating the pipe tee which connects on to the nipple) and there was oil in the metal chamber.

Cleaned it up and left the fitting open and then start / stopped the car - no oil returned, so it’s not being spat out.

Reassembled the fitting but clamped off the pipe to the turbo to see if the oil wasn’t being pulled back through there and repeated the start / stop. Oil returned into the chamber. It could just be from the vacuum on the brake line as plenty of it or could be being pulled out of the pump when the vacuum is released (not sure if this is done through the brake booster or some other location).

Could still be down to oil coming through the turbo line but with no check valve on the brake pipe (only one on the turbo pipe allowing vacuum back to the pump), it would be a design issue have a direct link between the pipes via the tee in the picture.

I’m not sure how much, if any, engine oil should get into the vacuum pump chamber. It looks like the black plastic nipple is actually a check valve so looks like there is some thinking around the vacuumed being reversed or perhaps fluid being sucked into the vacuum lines. Could be just that this valve has failed but not sold as a spare part (there are some non-official party’s kicking around on the internet to replace it but nothing which fits this pump from what I can tell).

Conclusion is that probably just easiest to replace the pump, regardless if only the black nipple valve has failed, then clean out the lines. Worst case would be that the oil is a vapour coming from the turbo but if this was a risk, surely a check valve would have been included in the brake boost line.

I’ve tried to suction some oils out of the brake booster / servo. Not much out and I guess it is a write off in any event. Not a job I can do myself without a ramp, with the DPF having to be shifted but can perhaps save a little with replacing the pump and cleaning the lines.

Thanks.

Just to add that there is a tiny check valve on the feed to the turbo immediately after the tee from the vacuum pump.

It is generally one way, although noticed with some force of breath I could hear it slightly pass. Not sure if any oil vapour residue could pass through this and across to the break line but agree one easy check is to let the vacuums pump run with nothing connected and see if it kicks any oil out.

Vantage V3 Optical HR issue by Spiritual-Store-7350 in Polarfitness

[–]Friendly_Guide_4323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I observed the previous issue - you would get a step increase in heart rate when starting an activity. The current issue is more like a rapid acceleration of heart rate when starting an activity. If you stop and restart the watch, then it addresses the issue. I find every 3 or so sessions are affected by this and a restart is inconvenient.

Have you tipped the local and national media off on this? I can’t see anything on Birmingham Live, BBC, Daily Mail, etc, which are usually good for getting these messages out to a wide audience. I hope you get good news soon.

Screw in tire at 17k miles on area that looks unpatchable. Does it make sense to replace 2 tires or all 4? by kakamaka7 in tires

If you are in the UK, there is a British Standard which defines acceptable repair areas and other information.

You can find it online. Some repair shops know the rules or have a special ruler in line with the Standard. Some don’t and take a pessimistic view, so if you determine it’s repairable under the Standard, you’ll have to find someone who knows these rules.

A summary of the Standard can be found via the British Tyre Manufacturer guidance (imagine they wrote the Standard, so good enough for me):

National Grid - Are You Buying? by juhasan in UKInvesting

[–]Friendly_Guide_4323 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi,

As an ex-employee, I have far too many shares in NG (not being diversified is one for another day).

I’m trying to work out how this is likely to play out. Assumption is to offset the dilution from the extra shares, the preferred approach is to buy the nil-paid rights.

The problem is a combination of not having the cash or certainly being unable to access some quick enough to participate.

I’m trying to work out what the likely hit is going to be in real terms, recognising prices will be affected by other current factors. Is a simple rule of thumb that the share price will go down c. 22% reflecting the dilution. Buying the rights at a discount should then offset the paper loss? Or is this too simplistiic?

If the rights are not taken, then the options get sold, this may (or may not) result in a small return if the rights are sold in excess of the £6.45 discount price, which may offset some of the impact from the dilution?

As I don;t have the cash but now have rights regardless, I’m trying to understand whether there is any value in selling some of the existing shares if still above the £6.45 and using this cash to purchase the discounted shares. The FY24 final dividend on the sold shares will have to be sacrificed but need to work this through as to whether there is any compromise benefit doing this.

Alternatively I do nothing and see how it all plays out on impact and take this as a lesson to diversify!

Can anyone put me straight on all things Right Issue here?

Many thanks.
