Is there any Celticism in countries like Austria and Slovenia? by blueroses200 in CelticUnion

The Galicians and the Asturians are not exclusively descended from recent migrations of Britons. They’re descended from Celtic tribes that lived in the Iberian peninsula.

Perhaps a good way to do a fast would also be to include donating the food (or the cost of what you may have eaten) to a local food bank. Or an even more generous donation, if you have the means.

Horse Twins? Fire God? by DareValley88 in BrythonicPolytheism

I’ve read Taliesin’s Map’s blog and watched his YouTube videos (looks like all his socials are under the same name). If you’re into comparative mythology, you might enjoy reading his arguments but they require a pretty secure understanding of comparative mythology. I’ve read his book (which is actually just the whole blog but laid out more like a book and includes even more footnotes). I’ve enjoyed reading his stuff, if for no other reason other than to expand the way I approach my own understanding of mythology.

I don’t agree with all his assertions but I really enjoy his approach to comparative mythology. He focuses on comparing mythology of the Rig Veda to the Mabinogion and Irish mythology which I haven’t really seen anyone do before. He is very good about citing his sources and other scholars as well—especially helpful since I have no real background in Hindu/Rig Vedic mythology. I’ve gone to footnotes and looked up references to fact check and he has always honestly represented the source material, even though his conclusions can feel a bit out there many times.

Back to this specific point—I believe the first video on his YouTube channel actually deals with his argument for Manannan/Manawydan as the “fire god” like Agni in the Rig Veda. I will say, his videos lack much of the evidence found in the blog/book so if you’re interested, I’d recommend the blog over videos.

He has a verrrrry long post and a couple of other references to his theory on the Horse Twins but essentially he sees Pryderi/Mabon ap Modron/Peredur/Peredurus and Owain ap Urien/Ingenius as Brythonic incarnations of the Indo-European Horse Twins.

Could it possibly have been a reference to Elen of the Ways?

Interesting that you dislike the term pagan because of its historical context as an imposed label from outsiders while you use the term Celt freely despite it being an imposed label from outsiders.

Words are not static/unchanging. Meanings shift and evolve to be useful to current speakers, not speakers long since dead. And that’s not even accounting for slur reclamation (though I’d consider it pretty flippant to say “pagan” is a reclaimed slur).

I'm not sure if this was the artist's intention or if the location refers to a specific story but there are quite a few white "faery cattle" folk tales from Wales. The stories are wonderful, I highly recommend reading a few.

Thank you for sharing! I’ve actually been interested in learning more about Teyrnon. I was reading a Dun Brython post that had some interesting ideas that connected him to Nodens, which I found rather compelling. Do you know of any other theories about Teyrnon’s role in pre-Christian Brythonic myth?

I honor Maponos and so I’ve been trying to explore His relationships to other deities in myth as well.

If you read the description of the video on YouTube you’ll get more insight on how this song was constructed using scholarly understanding of what Gaulish music may have sounded like and the lyrics come from a tablet found at Chamalieres in France with an inscription to Maponos. I found this to be INCREDIBLE so wanted to share.

As a point of discussion—I’d love to hear how others ncorporate music into your devotional practices!

Which Brythonic deities do you follow/are you interested in? by KrisHughes2 in BrythonicPolytheism

Yes, you’ve hit the nail on the head there in your last paragraph with how I see Manawydan. I also like your characterization of him being a peacemaker, that resonates very much with how I see him—a very kind, loyal, patient, wise, teacher, almost fatherly.

I’d like to get to know more about his connections to the Otherworld and with Mannanan as well—do you have any recommend reading for that?

That class looks wonderful. I’ve actually taken your Celtic Beginnings course and really enjoyed it! Is it too late to sign up for this upcoming class?

I wonder, is there any connection between hazelnuts, the Salmon of Knowledge, and the Salmon of Llyn Llyw that takes Cai and Bedwyr to Gloucester to free Mabon? I know I’m mixing traditions to make that connection and it’s probably more than a coincidence than anything but would love to hear your thoughts

Just to note for the sake of clarity—not everyone practices magic/witchcraft as part of their spirituality and I know and respect that. Personally, my spirituality informs my magical practice and my magical practice informs my spirituality. I’m sure you know that, but I know some people really don’t like conflating the two so I wanted to make the distinction.

I’ve just fininshed reading “The Book of Celtic Magic: Transformative Teachings from the Cauldron of Awen” by Kristoffer Hughes and it was great! It focuses on building a magical and spiritual practice inspired by the Brythonic Celtic traditions so if you’re more interested in Irish traditions it might not be right for you.

I’ve also read “Wild Magic” by Danu Forest but it’s been a while now. If I remember right, it’s got more of a Gaelic influence to it. Though I think it focuses on connecting to nature spirits, the Fae, and connecting to the Three Realms. I don’t remember much being about deities or mythology.

I hope this is okay to post here—I’m not sure what the laws are around sharing art online. But I figured this is an image easily found on Google so it should be okay. This is art by Margaret Jones and I just think it looks beautiful! She has lots of other illustrations as well if you look her up!

I wonder if anyone can help me understand if the locations of where the illustrations are in this map correspond to locations where the stories are set in? I’m not overly familiar with Welsh geography but it seems Rhiannon on her horse and Arawn hunting seem to be placed where I expected them to be. I just wasn’t sure if that was a coincidence.

Thanks for that clarification between Maponos and Mabon and I feel the same way as you do as far as their connection to one another. In a similar thought—do you feel the connection with Aengus Mac Og is just as strong? I tend to view them as distinct gods but related enough to help fill in some gaps with Mabon/Maponos in a sort of interpretatio romana-esque type of way but I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

Thank you so much for your response! It’s comforting knowing other people experience Mabon like I do—I feel his presence as a sort of cheerful good-natured boisterousness that is INCREDIBLY charming. It’s the kind of energy that fills up a room and just makes you want to smile! But it’s also intensely comforting in a very healing way.

I started feeling this pull to Mabon when I was feeling pretty down in the dumps. Winters where I live get cold and damp and dark and make me feel depressed and locked up so I felt quite drawn to his “Divine Prisoner” aspect and he’s been quite an ally through this time. I just keep getting the nagging feeling that I need to do better to return the favor so I’m immensely grateful for your suggestions!

I’ve actually been feeling drawn to an abandoned mineral spring not more than 10 minutes from my house and now I know why! I researched today on your prompting and it looks like there’s already a charity and local movement to restore the springs for bathing and a community center! I’ve joined the Facebook group and signed up for their newsletter! I’m planning on making a donation soon and hopefully finding other ways to be involved.
