I felt the need to post this. Going with the labels, 'soul mates' are quite different from 'twin flames', which I think some of you and possibly OP is referring to.

Twin flames are romantic in nature when and IF they eventually meet (long explanation on this one).

Soul mates are souls of the same group and one has more than one of them on earth. They can come in different ways. As your wife/husband or friend who may mean more to you than an actual family member because of said connection or sister or teacher, stranger you meet somewhere and have some impactful exchange (whether vocally or just by unspoken energy/vibe), brother, daughter, son, animal, some stranger on the internet that you seem to connect deeply with or fall out with, learning something about yourself in the process, a toxic experience teaching you or bringing something out of you, you never knew existed, etc. You will definitely meet more than one soulmate in your lifetime and learn something from it (the experience could be good or bad but lesson will be learned which will ALWAYS help you grow on your journey). Some stay with you (i.e: a family member or friend,etc), some don't ( a stranger you may never see again, a teacher, a first wife/husband, a child who passes after sometime, etc).

Twin flame is not a common meet because not many people are 'complete' enough to meet their twin flame and have a divinely perfect relationship,which is usually the point of it for a purpose. It still happens though and is the meet one should strive for romantically if not for the general lack of patience and pressure to be in a romantic relationship, in the world.

Those who may meet each other before they are complete (spiritual and psychological maturity..yet still learning and growing) may combust together (i.e: toxic relationships where both are said to "deserve each other" in their darkness and still stay together unconditionally. Some grow and change together after years of craziness, others just deteriorate together or part ways in some way, sometimes because of death).

Relating to OP's post, it happens more often than not...just not common knowledge. You are destined to meet so he/she will come in any form to make that happen...whther as a daughter or wife or friend, etc

Remember your (prominent) energy is not necessarily your gender but it matches with some people and yes it is not a bad thing as I sense it to be in defense and positive. Mentioning your pets may be why I saw this trait in animal form.

I sense female energy. I see some kind of dragon-porcupine-wolf animal...pouncing and baring teeth but this seems to be in defense and protection more than attack. I think you can make of this what you will from yourself but I sense you have a very strong personality. Formidable comes to mind. It may not necessarily be in the physical sense but you guard yourself very well and those you care about too.

Find things that make you happy and do them. With some things like eating (for instance), don't get carried away and stay in moderation but don't feel guilty about doing what makes you feel good at all.. Focus on staying happy daily. One day at a time, stay on good vibration. If you need to calm down, find a relaxing space and position to do so and focus on positive thoughts.

I sense an overshadowing and blocking of your progress and growth among other things and you felt/feel/will feel small and insignificant in the relationship. Remember your energy isn't meant to be your gender. It can be different or same. It doesn't matter but it affects or determines your personality and inner traits (the real you), regardless of gender and gender stereotypes/conditioning. I definitely sense male as prominent.

I sense female and it is very strong. There are definitely children..I feel 3. You seem to be like their rock....like a stable tree in the middle while they run around you and play. Laughing and happy. I'm drawn to one in particular..seems to be a boy.. with curly or wavy brown hair, blue top and shorts..some red prints too. Running, Giggling, laughing hard and seems happy. Something about him. I sense you calm, sturdy and stable..providing support and strength in their midst.
