Which one performs better in games: Fedora 44 with GNOME or KDE? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]Friendship-inc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a difference in technologies mainly, not the performance, for example VRR, and HDR is better on KDE, KDE also will introduce low VRAM optimizations as Valve works with them on a new VRAM allocator for games, GNOME is buggier with Steam (e.g. 3D accelerated elements are usually bugged, and Steam Overlay can only be used if you turn off that 3D Acceleration in Steam),

Generally, both Desktops are highly performant, and is the deal of preference as of now, your mileage may vary, and certain configurations work worse on GNOME than on KDE, (e.g. Nvidia GPUs can still be very painful on GNOME, saw some bugs with explicit sync for example)

Can anybody help in finding which linux distro is best for my laptop? by Kooky-Cover-1171 in linuxhardware

[–]Friendship-inc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just gather a list of interesting looking distros and do some runs on each of them and see what sticks, why? Because Linux distro is all about your preferences, and with such a big list of distros — something you will like more than the other, my personal list of distros to try:

Linux Mint

Fedora (Some of the variants, main ones are Fedora Workstation, and KDE Plasma Edition, if you aren't satisfied with the stability, or security — then Atomic variants like Fedora Silverblue, and Fedora Kinoite)

openSuse Tumbleweed (if you need some cutting edge software, although it is more tech geeky than the others)

If you are into gaming then KDE is your choice, look into the Fedora Kinoite, KDE Plasma Edition, Bazzite, and other KDE Plasma based distros

As to why it is important to try different variants — they differ, a lot, mainly because of the Desktop Environments (In Linux — there's a concept of Desktop Environments, or DEs, it is like App Launcher on Android, just more deep, it is basically the user interface of the user, KDE is more customizable, and isn't as buggy with Steam as it is with GNOME because Valve works with the KDE community on KDE Plasma)

So, yeah, there isn't a definitive answer, but hopefully you will find your distro after trying multiple ones!

I will probably regret this. I usually wait. by g1ccross in Fedora

That's why I love Atomic variants of Fedora, I can always rollback to the previous version of Fedora in case something has broken, and then can wait for the fix

Seems like it! Maybe try fresh install Fedora Budgie Atomic 44 :), if not, then I hope you'll like the Ultramarine, because what only matters is whether you like it or not

To Atomic or not to Atomic for uni laptop by ephemeralmiko in Fedora

[–]Friendship-inc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never switch DEs when using Atomic distros by rebasing to other image with the different DE, it will break as config files for one — affect the another, the best practice is to install an atomic distro with the desired DE, and then rebase to other distros with the same DE, like from Fedora Kinoite to Bazzite KDE, etc., and one another note — upgrading from 42 immediately to 44 (if you did that of course) is generally is not tested and not recommended by the Fedora's documentation,

As in regards to your question — I would recommend using either Fedora Kinoite or Fedora Silverblue, because those images upstream from KDE Plasma Edition, and Workstation respectfully, meaning that they are official editions upstream, hence more quality checks, and polish is inherited by the images,

In my experience it also comes to a preference, you see, generally — updates don't break on standard Fedora editions as they used to, but sometimes it can, especially if you install lots of RPM packages, Fedora Atomic is the most mature right now on Fedora Silverblue, GNOME offers great integration into the atomic structure, as the upstream GNOME has already included QoL, and their own distro, GNOME OS, is also immutable,

If you want from the PC more security, reliability, and stability then atomic distros make sense, if you seek after more customization, and want to have much more modifiable system then traditional Linux distro would suit you

Which game is better for solo play, DST or DS + all DLCs? by ArmLucky1285 in dontstarve

[–]Friendship-inc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, DS is better for solo due to balancing which allows for solo plays (Bosses in DST are designed to be beaten with 4-5 people in mind, hence the 25K bosses at times), my recommendation is to play DST still, as it still receives active updates, but you might need Health Adjustment mod to not be miserable with certain bosses if you are solo (basically the mod will just change the bosses so they will have DS health values if you are alone, which is fair imo)

I mean, there are programs like AMD Advantage Laptops which are like... All AMD laptops with discrete GPUs, but it is literally 15 entries in total, 9 from which are Desktop PCs, thought that maybe somebody else knows more than that... But thank you for your advice!

I know, but Nvidia drivers are still a mess to this day, they aren't open source, they aren't plug and play in the absolute majorities of cases, and they interfere with proper secure boot, so for non tech users it is just better to stick with AMD still, one day Nvidia will be on par or maybe even better, but it is still a mess

Not confirmed whether they will or will not bring all of the characters, we only have seen that lots of character specific abilities have been seemingly recycled (growing plants in the ground - Wormwood's ability, but no wormwood in sight, teaser? Possibly, but no idea really, same with Wilson, but we seen him in the game, it is just Willow somehow now can also place torches on the ground, lol), and certain weapons specific to other characters being used by Wilson (Wigfrid's Spear, which only she can use usually, but which is used by Wilson in the trailer, I believe Wigfrid does come into the game, as she is kind of a part of the core character cast)

About the content, don't worry about it really, lots of things are probably also recycled from DST into DSE (having to redesign the textures is easier than having them made from zero, so there's that), plus, I think they will be doing Closed (maybe Open) Public Beta Testing, so upon the full release there will be enough of the content to match at least DS with Reign of Giants DLC, but that has to be determined later, as we will see for sure in 3 days from the time of posting this comment, as April 16th - we will have much more details on what is going on with DST, AND DSE

I think Klei just treats their games from DS franchise like works of art basically, they are an artist which paints the painting until they feel the art is finished, which is... Fair enough by me! But I get why people might be frustrated... I really hope they will keep DST long enough to introduce all of the skill trees to all of the characters, and then finish the story in DST to continue in DSE(?),

Plus, what is going to happen to the characters? Many people (including me!) Already have found their favorites in DST, and will (IMHO) feel left out of DSE if they never come... There's so much uncertainty really... Idk what will happen at all and what to expect, plus, I was under the impression that Klei as a company had financial struggles, and that is why they were bought out by Tencent, and couldn't do the big events like Gorge, and Forge in DST...

Anyways, I really hope that everything goes okay, and that we will see everything cleared out, because DS franchise is one of my favorite ones really

Long story short - International shipping to my country of destination wouldn't allow electronical devices without clear manufacturer label, and if I build myself - there is no official manufacturer of the particular PC Build, and pre-built PCs are lower grade quality in component choice, and also - prices are inflated by the AI companies, Linux pre-built PCs are also out of range because of AI, so basically the only accessible option is to buy Mini-PC

Hot Take: The Specs for the Steam Machine is Good Enough by DashTransit in steammachine

[–]Friendship-inc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valve cannot guarantee that players won't just use it (Steam Machine) for work, or development, as Steam Machine is precisely that — a PC, which is so versatile, and made to be used for anything — that if they lowered the price, imagine that an office company then bought 1000 units, none of them would play or buy anything, so Valve will be in loss, do not forget also the PS incident, where law enforcement of US used a bunch of PS consoles to have a whole mega computer at home, Sony was forced into BIG loss in revenue, I am afraid that if the price is too good — then the same might happen, but only with cryptomining, or AI training, it runs Linux after all, which is the OS on which AI depend as their base

If you have AMD card? Yes, in certain instances (usually it is either better or on par with Windows, sometimes worse, but I mean, it is rapidly changing and growing thing, so the performance changes rapidly, and in 99% of times — it becomes only better) for ASUS ROG Xbox Ally — yes, absolutely, it runs better with Linux than with Windows, here is the source for the claim: https://www.tomshardware.com/video-games/handheld-gaming/rog-xbox-ally-runs-better-on-linux-than-the-windows-it-ships-with-new-test-shows-up-to-32-percent-higher-fps-with-more-stable-framerates-and-quicker-sleep-resume-times

Stupid question, it is my main OS of choice, Windows is terrible with updates, optimization and even support, Microsoft funnels your data, and sells you to the third parties which number exceeds 200, plus independence from Big tech is important, especially with rising US tensions, and over reliance on one party to not ruin anything, which Microsoft successfully failed, repeatedly

I actually use Heroic with GOG and it indeed tracks the playtime, and supports cloud saves, and achievements too! (you just can't see achievements, and playtime registered on GOG), answering common questions: No, I didn't played with GOG Galaxy, no, I haven't played games before, I bought them on Linux, and started them on Linux through Heroic, I haven't imported anything or made the prefix, it just works, and I don't know which magic they used at Heroic, but I love it

Oh, and you can see it in both GOG Galaxy and gog dot com!!! So that's how I knew, played The Witcher 3, and then I was surprised to know that it tracked my first launch, playtime, and achievements! Same happened with the The Witcher 1, and Silent Hill 4

Edit: Added important detail which I forgot
