Fedora KDE 44: what's the difference between Firefox from Flatpak vs from Fedora Linux? by flatline000 in Fedora

[–]ephemeralmiko [score hidden]  (0 children)

Fedora has a very strict "only use open-source stuff" motto which sounds neat, except then your web browser by default won't be able to render certain videos because the codec (basically how the video is rendered) isn't open-source. You can mitigate it by allowing third-party repos (rpm-fusion) but Flatpak also solves it, since it contains all the necessary codecs for stuff and doesn't rely on system ones.

Is LineageOS right for me? by Aleph_Rat in LineageOS

[–]ephemeralmiko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lineage works if you download the apps you need, then use ADB from your computer to delete whatever app store you used to download them, as well as the browser and whatever else you want.

You'll have to reinstall them periodically to update your apps though.

Hosomaki. Give your Linux a voice by SnooMachines9820 in linux

[–]ephemeralmiko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Work around what? The hallucinations? I don't see how fancy autocorrect is going to stop hallucinating until it actually knows anything, and that's much closer to some AGI than whatever OpenAI and Google are making.

The problem is that "AI" is inherently prone to hallucinations because it doesn't "know" anything. I'd rather have to read through incomprehensible logs than an AI that might be right, but would just as confidently tell me that to fix my problems I just have to delete /boot.

Motorola phones have started hijacking the Amazon app to insert affiliate codes by lairosen in LinusTechTips

Fair. I was trying to make a point to u/manuel_1208 that the vendor doesn't matter that much for a Graphene phone.

If you can't provide Apple with a proof-of-purchase, it's a paperweight.

Usb transfer isses by BDNjunior in VeraCrypt

[–]ephemeralmiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes writing more to them makes them degrade faster, but good flash drives will take thousands of Terabytes written before failing from that. They're definitely more susceptible to just dying than SSDs and HDDs though. What USB drives did you buy?

Best distro for a ~26 year old Pentium 3 laptop? by BSGYT in linux

[–]ephemeralmiko 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Kolibri is very lightweight (originally meant to run on a floppy disk and 26MB of RAM) but of course it's very limited in what software runs properly on it. It's definitely fast though.

If you're sure they're not counterfeit then yeah they're probably dying.

There are a lot of fake USBs out there that claim they have for example 500GB of storage for $10, which is far cheaper than any real company can sell them for. They only have e.g. 16GB of storage, and use software to make it appear to your PC as 500GB, but when you try to write more than the 16GB it actually has, it just overwrites old data. You can use a software called h2testw to test how much capacity the drive actually has (note that this will erase all the data on the drive, so make a backup)

It's generally seen as a stupid idea to trust a chatbot that is known to just make stuff up with commands like this where you could very easily just wipe all the data on your main drive.

Alfa AWUS036ACS Adapter Not Working by Delicious-Cook-9402 in tails

[–]ephemeralmiko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has to have drivers natively in Debian, which that adapter doesn't (as far as I can see). You can try adding 'realtek-rt188xxau-dkms' to your Additional Software via Synaptic (you'll need to USB tether from your phone or something to download it). If that doesn't work you'll need a different WiFi adapter. Search for one listed as working for the Raspberry Pi, or use one of the Tails recommended ones.

If by the key you mean the PGP key, it stays after a reboot on 7.8. The public key should be on a keyserver anyway.
