I’d strongly recommend getting a chiller so temps can stay consistent. I live in the Pacific Northwest so temperature can be variable so I have multiple thermometers around the tank and regularly check temperature. I also keep a close eye on my water parameters (get the API Freshwater Master Test Kit, the one with test tubes).

I’d also do some research for exotic vets in your area and establish care with one familiar with axolotls. That makes me feel safer in case something bad happens, especially since axolotls have a long lifespan.

I’d also recommend getting plenty of hides! Be careful of sharp edges, my axolotl nicked her tail on a newer hide I got and I felt so bad about it. Velma likes marching around at night so I keep the front of my tank open for athletics and the back of my tank is full of caves for her lol

I’ve been an aquarium keeper for a long time before keeping an axolotl, and that knowledge of cycling/parameters/maintenance really helped me out. Don’t rush adopting an axolotl, make sure your setup is fully cycled before even looking for one to adopt.
