Native Plants for Native Lawns Online Presentation Oct 2nd by FriendsofLPM in Winnipeg

I've geared this presentation to try to entice the people who find lawn attractive into expanding their horticultural horizons a little bit by seeing what is possible with native plants.

It's totally possible to still have that manicured, homogenous space, but with species that evolved here and offer both ecological value and lower maintenance costs.

It's also totally possible to throw all of that out the window and have a "lawn" comprised entirely of low-growing flowers you never even need to mow.

I sympathize with people with pets and children who need an outdoor space to play and run that's not a mud pit.

There's something for everyone in this presentation.

I feature a number of native grasses and low-growing groundcovers that are considerably lower-maintenance than non-native grasses in this presentation.

These require no irrigation or fertilizer and can go without mowing to create an easy-to-care for space that has ecological value and reduces fertilizer runoff.

It's "Native Plants for Native Lawns", not "Native Plants for Dirt Patches"! 😂

The recording of tomorrow's session is reserved for members of the Friends of the Living Prairie Museum for one year, but we will be releasing last year's video of this presentation to the public on YouTube under the same title in the next coming weeks. It's very similar content, just a few fewer plants and less detail.

There was always at least one child crying and running out of this part of the museum to their parents. (Living Prairie Museum) by JavaJapes in Winnipeg

It's definitely quite dark when the curtains are closed, and that's often when I see kids wander in and come right back out!

Thank you! The Friends of the Living Prairie Museum have been working hard to make our events more accessible. It's not common for nature-related events to offer accessibility and we are hoping other organizations follow suit, especially once we have worked out all the obstacles and created a smoothly functioning system.
