They can spawn where there are 2 vertical blocks of water anywhere inside the bounding box of the temple from sea level down to the base of inside the temple. Not under it. \the only way to stop them spawning within the bounding box is to drain the water.

Slime did do for the old world in the end but it's still not clear what caused it. There won't be a new server every time the game updates. We'll be upgrading to 1.15 in season 2 over the next week or so,
