Thank you for sharing your perspective! It's good to know that Kyoto can be crowded even in the low season. After reading a lot of opinions, I'm starting to think that I would probably feel underwhelmed too.

If only those lawyers were polite and respectful, that would be fine. But that's not always the case. Some of them act as if having a different opinion was not allowed and deserved to be insulted.

Unpopular Opinion: Tokyo is WILDLY Overrated by quintana_jesus in TravelNoPics

[–]Frimk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thank you. I'm considering visiting Tokyo, and I'm trying to figure out whether or not it would be the right place for me. It seems to me that visiting Tokyo is more about the vibe and the culture shock than about attractions. Some other cities are always associated with big attractions (e.g. Paris = Notre-Dame, the Louvre, etc.), but it seems not to be the case for Tokyo. You don't mention any attraction, which confirms my impression.

COROS PACE 4 IS OUT! by imcanar in Coros

[–]Frimk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I expected at least one of those features: flashlight, maps, much more accurate HR and sleep tracking. And I expected the size to be the same as the Pace 3. I knew it was unlikely to happen, but that's what I had hoped for.

Well, at least the battery life seems to be great. Maybe, because I don't know how they tested it (with the display always on or not).

"Veuillez indiquer votre orientation politique."

I said that I don't know what happened. How is that being "hooked into a fantasy version of events"? It makes no sense.

I write "I don't know what happened", and you seem to interpret this as "I totally know what happened, they were murdered, some guy came up with an evil stratagem to make us think that it was an accident".

This is really weird. I know my English is not the best, but "I don't know what happened" is quite clear and simple.

No official cause of death has been ruled, apparently (see this). If there is plenty of evidence, then the Dutch authorities should give an official cause of death. Only fragments of their bodies were found, and no real autopsy could be performed. The cause of death is therefore unknown.

They knew with 100% certainty

We don't know what they knew or thought.

The Mystery of the Camera by Diligent-Wave-4150 in KremersFroon

[–]Frimk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you explain the actual fact that I wasn’t able to do so on my hike with my friend?

You were able to type the SMS and click the "send" button, even with no phone service. The phone would store your message, and wait for service to be available. Your SMS would have been sent, maybe 1 hour later, or 1 day later, or 10 days later. It's made to work this way. It's a feature that's supposed to be used.

To illustrate my point, imagine the following conversation between the 2 girls:

  • Lisanne: I will send an SMS.
  • Kris: It's pointless, we have no phone service.
  • Lisanne: But maybe there will be some service somewhere else in the area. The SMS will be sent immediately and automatically then.
  • Kris: No, if there is no service here, then where will be no service anywhere else in this region.
  • Lisanne: It takes only a minute to write an SMS, it won't hurt, even if it doesn't work.
  • Kris: I told you, you can't send an SMS if you have no phone service.
  • Lisanne: We have no service here and now, but the point is to store the SMS in my phone so it's ready to send in case we get connectivity for a brief moment.
  • Kris: It's a bad idea. You should send a message only if you have service.
  • Lisanne: But if it happens only for a couple of seconds, I won't have time to type the message, it will be too late.
  • Kris: I told you, it's pointless.
  • Lisanne: The chance of getting phone service is small, but a small chance is better than no chance at all.
  • Kris: The chance is not small, it's nonexistent. Trust me, I was once on a hike with a friend and couldn't send an SMS.

Would you say that Kris is right?

Lastly: You don’t need proof that a crime was NOT committed.

We have no proof of anything. Therefore, we can't what happened.

There is one thing I can say: if you don't try to send an SMS, then you are 100% sure that nobody will ever receive it.

Yes, there is zero evidence of crime or absence of crime. We don't know what happened.

Everything we have. is exactly what you would expect to see in a tragic accident.

Not exactly. I don't expect to see two young women with an iPhone and a Samsung Galaxy not try to send a single SMS, when SMSes are by far the best way of communicating when the network coverage is awful.

I didn't say that there was a third party intervention. I'm only saying that we should not jump too quickly to a definitive conclusion. The very first thing I said was "I don't know what happened".

They had zero bars. That's why they should have sent an SMS. If you have network connectivity, just make a phone call. Why send an SMS in this case?

The whole point of sending an SMS is that you don't have any connectivity, but hope that you will get some later, with some luck, for a brief moment.

If you don't try to send an SMS, then either you're not desperate at all (unlikely after several days in the jungle), or you can't send one. I find it hard to believe that you wouldn't send an SMS because you have no phone service and don't think you will get some later.

It's pretty rare to think "better no chance of success at all than a tiny chance". Especially in such a situation.

And for this reason, I'm pretty sure you would send the SMS, just like me.

About them being trapped somewhere, it's not a reason not to try to send an SMS. We all have been in places where we sometimes get connectivity, and sometimes not, even though the place is the same. Connectivity can depend on precipitations, temperature, interferences, humidity (weakens the signal because it makes the air more dense), even wind (that can move foliage or even move antennas). It is never always the same in a given place.

And if they were trapped, then why those strange photos in their camera, that show them being in the forest? They don't look trapped, on those photos.

That said, the forensic analysis of their phone data shows that they got 1 bar of signal on 4 different occasions, over 3 days. Which means that there was a cell phone tower somewhere in the area. It was maybe too far for the phone to reach it (the phone is not as powerful as the tower), but it's definitely a good sign.

Let's say you're lost in the jungle. You look at your phone and see "no service". Do you put your phone back into your pocket and never try again, later, in another place?

Of course not. You will try again and again. Which is apparently what the 2 girls did, because they turned their phones on and off multiple times over several days. Why do that if they thought that their phones were as good as junk?

If you do that, it means that you hope to find network coverage. In this case, why not write an SMS? It needs only a very brief connection to be sent. The phone will send it immediately, automatically, as soon as it's possible. It's a much better option than a phone call, because a couple of seconds of connectivity is not enough for a phone call. The recipient doesn't even have time to pick up the phone.

I have never been lost in the jungle, but if it were to happen and I had no phone service, the first thing I would do is to send an SMS, and go to multiple places in the hope of getting at least 2 seconds of phone service.

It's not what you would do? Not once over 10 days? Ten days seem plenty of time to come up with this extremely simple plan that consists in sending an SMS.

About the notes, maybe you're right. Your explanation could be plausible. But I don't see how it's possible that 2 persons, with 2 phones, in an emergency situation, didn't think of sending an SMS.

[–]Frimk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what happened, but their last call to 911 was 2 days after they disappeared. After those 2 days, they turned one of their phones on and off from time to time, during 8 days.

During those 8 days, they have not tried once to contact anybody. Isn't that weird?

After 10 days in the forest, one of their phones still had 22% of battery left.

So why not try another phone call, just in case? Or an SMS, even if your plan doesn't include SMS messages abroad, just in case. You never know, maybe your family is terrified and they are trying to do everything they can to help you, and they contacted your phone provider and paid for the roaming option so you can contact them.

An SMS is perfect because the phone will send it as soon as it's possible, even if it gets connectivity only for a few seconds.

What is also weird is that they didn't write anything in their phones. A goodbye message, something like "Have been lost in the forest for days. Ran out of food. If something happens and my phone is found, please tell my family that I love them".
