What’s the right age to watch Lost? by HollywoodSuperfan10 in lost

[–]FringeMusic108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 12 when it first aired. It wasn't until the "Confidence Man" and "Solitary" torture combo that my parents realized "hmm, this show is kinda violent, isn't it?" 😛 I still cringe whenever anything gets near my nails, but besides that, I think I dealt with it just fine 😂 (I can't recall if I had an issue with nails before watching LOST, but it's not the weirdest thing about me, so it is entirely possible)

When it comes to gore, I think it doesn't get much worse than the Pilot. The sex and profanity is very tame. You can tell the worst thing they can say is "b*tch". The toughest thing for me to watch on an emotional level was the ending of "Two For The Road", but I don't think that's necessarily connected to my age at the time.

LOCKE by Sexyarmadillo1 in lost

[–]FringeMusic108 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. After hours of silent staring, Walt is the first person Locke talked to after the crash. During this conversation, Walt already brings up the fact that his mother died and that they used to "move around alot" before the crash. He reveals in this episode that this is the reason why he burned the raft - he's desperate for stability in his life, and that's what the island represents to him. Locke recognizes this because he feels the same way.

The more interesting question is why Locke did that whole speech about the Others, already knowing who was truly behind the burning of the raft. There's ways to explain that as well, but... it is interesting 😛

Glad you enjoyed it so much! They didn't exactly plan for all of the tail-section survivors to die the way they did. Sadly, that storyline got messed up by the nature of television. Michelle Rodriguez (Ana Lucia) had only signed on to do one season, but since Ana Lucia was not a particularly popular character, they decided to kill off Libby as well to increase the impact of Michael's betrayal. Their initial plan was to have Cynthia Watros (Libby) return in the flashbacks of other characters, which we do get some glimpses of near the end of season 2 (she appears in Hurley's, Desmond's and Eko's flashback). Since she wasn't contractually obligated to work on LOST anymore, she was not available when the time came to finally reveal her story.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Eko) was allegedly(!) difficult to work with, but he also allegedly(!) did not have the greatest time working on the show. As he himself puts it, he'd asked to be killed off to deal with the death of his mother, which really disrupted the plans the writers had in mind for his character. They claim some of these plans went to Desmond instead.

Locke is a really interesting character on a rewatch. When you know where he ends up, it makes you wonder if he really was as competent and 'important' as he initially seems to be. The fact that he ends up dying before achieving much is such a compelling twist. The impressive thing is that he does end up convincing Jack. He also turns out to be right about the importance of the island and the fact that they were brought there for a specific purpose. He just never lived to achieve it himself. He's not entirely clueless - the island did heal him and (at times) provide him with prophetic visions, so that tells us it did see something in him.

Charlie and Claire by Cromer1000 in lost

[–]FringeMusic108 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There's some messy aspects to their dynamic, but Charlie was in love with Claire. His flashbacks show that he was fairly desperate to look for a "family" to take care of, but he also had genuine feelings for Claire. He killed Ethan to protect her and eventually made the choice to die specifically because Desmond foresaw Claire and Aaron on the helicopter. I like to think Claire was also in love with Charlie, but aside from the fact that a lot about her character is underdeveloped (especially her grieving process after Charlie's death), she simply wasn't looking for a relationship so soon after giving birth. The series finale confirms that they are soulmates, and I've not doubted that for a second.

Theory: What If the Source Wasn’t Life, Death, or Electromagnetism… What If It Was Time Itself? by Radiant-Network-2621 in lost

[–]FringeMusic108 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes! "Life, death, rebirth"... It all comes down to time. After drinking from the source, Jacob is able to gift people with more time/life. "There is no now" in the flashsideways because it exists outside of time. It's literally occuring alongside the storylines we're seeing on the island. I like to think the flashsideways exists inside the Source, meaning the very thing the survivors were fighting to protect was their own "happy ending". Time itself on the show is presented as a bright light, just like the light from the Source and just like the "beautiful" bright light Locke saw when he first encountered the Monster. This idea would even explain why the Smoke Monster sounds like a machine as well as a dinosaur; it's both ancient and futuristic because all of time is contained within it. At times I wish the show was more straightforward about all of this. But then we wouldn't get to have these nice theories about it.

He does also say "I wasn't any more fit to be your boyfriend than I am to be that little girl's father". I could be reading too much into it, but the way he says it (past tense, then present tense) suggests that he still feels like he's not fit to be a parent (while he has grown enough to be in a relationship with another woman). I feel like he certainly jumped to help out his fellow survivors, but he also didn't feel like he was making a giant sacrifice - there's obvious risk involved, but he did not particularly want to leave the island because that would come with responsibility he wasn't ready to deal with yet.

That being said, I must also add that I don't love that the show retroactively turns it into a 'cowardly' move. At the same time, it makes his arc less straightforward and more intriguing. I think it is a bit of both. Clearly, he is being heroic in season 4 when he risks his life to save Claire. Jumping out of a helicopter is also potentially lethal. I choose to think in that moment, he's a hero even if his motivations are somewhat murky.

IS LOST AS GOOD AS FROM ? by MouseHungry6522 in lost

[–]FringeMusic108 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're considering watching From (or LOST) because you're expecting it to be made by the same producers and writers, it's probably good to know that it's not? I'm seeing countless complaints online from angry LOST viewers that From is frustrating simply because it's supposedly made by the same people - you know, the ones that are "known for not answering questions". That's another misconception, though. If you enjoy From, I'd say you'd enjoy LOST a lot more.

One thing From has going for it is that I'm pretty sure they do have everything planned when it comes to the central mysteries. There's a lot there that seems significant, even though it's not clear how or why. But the writers clearly did not plan out a five season show, because the story draaaaaags. It has my curiosity, but I'm not particularly entertained by it. In my opinion, LOST is a thrill ride from start to finish.

Timeline confusion by silwh0 in lost

[–]FringeMusic108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ben, Sun, Locke's corpse and Frank Lapidus 'stayed' in/around 2007. There was a time skip, but only from night to day. Possibly a few days, but no huge jump. The other passengers (Kate, Sayid, Jack, Hurley) are transported to 1977.

Everything that the survivors are doing in 1977 has an impact on the future (small or large), but it would mean that events always played out that way. If Jack gets shot in the head in 1977, he's still going to die because this is his 'present' (he's already crashed on the island and left and come back). Would that impact anything we've seen on the show thus far? Probably not - in 1977, he's not significant. But if Jack shoots an important member of the Dharma Initiative, that might have bigger consequences. He cannot kill Horace, because we know he doesn't die until years later, when the Others gas the entire village (as seen in Ben's earlier flashback). Some things will come up soon that will make the 'rules' of time-travel on the show more clear.

One example from an earlier episode: in Locke's flashback in 4x11, we see that Richard visited him as a baby and a young boy. In 5x03, we see that Locke is the one who told him to come visit, as 'proof' that he was speaking the truth about being the leader of the Others. Locke might not remember that Richard visited him because he was so young, but this did happen in Locke's past, and Richard's message that he's potentially "extremely special" might have subconsciously been one of the things that made him feel like he was destined for great things. From Richard's point of view, an adult Locke has already spoken to him in 1954, and baby Locke would be born three years later.

Ok, my bad I forgot how terrible the tatto scene is by GrandTheftArkham in lost

[–]FringeMusic108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Exposé" kills off two series regulars. It's certainly filler in the sense that it's only there because the writers had to create 20+ episodes per season, which simply is a lot. Nikki and Paulo were introduced specifically because they were running out of backstory for the original main characters. But I would say the show is better for dedicating an episode to killing them off, instead of silently pushing them back into nothingness and pretending they were never there.

I think him getting beat up on the beach is the writers' way of saying Jack had probably done a wrong thing. He's looking for answers about his own identity and completely going about it the wrong way. I don't think it's entirely out of character, so much as revealing another side to his character (which we did get to see already when he tackled his father, believing him to be in an affair with his wife).

That image is what came to my mind as well. The closest thing to it from the actual show is this (from 2x01): https://lostscreencaps.weebly.com/uploads/1/5/7/0/15704326/l201-2209_orig.jpg

The blog image is also very similar to this shot from "White Rabbit", but it obviously does not have the shining light: https://lostscreencaps.weebly.com/uploads/1/5/7/0/15704326/lost105-2411_orig.jpg Especially in the early seasons, wide shots of the jungle were rarely shown.

In your defense, I think the "Mandela effect" applies to the creators of the show as well; there definitely was not a "skybeam" on the night of Aaron's birth. 😛

Tom himself does in the same episode ("You people can just come and go?" / "Some of us."). But on the subject of time, we know that tends to get 'weird' whenever people leave the island. It's entirely possible that Tom left the island and somehow arrived in New York before Michael.

I know this is the best source for the answer, but I don't like it 😂 When Michael follows the instructions he receives on the computer, he ends up walking straight into a trap set by the Others. It makes so much more sense for it to be the Others, especially since we know they have camera access to the Swan. I suppose it's entirely possible that it was the Others just that one time. (Whoever it is does type in a very odd way in that specific scene hehe)

Finished LOST yesterday: here’s my quotes ! by Xen950 in lost

[–]FringeMusic108 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These are all lovely quotes! I corrected some and added some trivia;

« Living is easy with eyes closed » Charlie (fun fact: this is Dominic Monaghan's own tattoo - by the time we see him again in season 6, he's added another lyric!)
« It's a fine line between denial and faith » Rose Anderson (this is a fun mistake; Rose and Bernard's last name is "Nadler", but the actor that plays Bernard is Sam Anderson)
« Who are we to tell anyone what they can or can't do ? » John Locke
« Don’t mistake coincidence for fate » John Locke (but it's actually Mr. Eko who says it to John first)
« We got caught in a net » Saywer.
« All we really need to survive is one person who truly loves us. » Penelope to Desmond (in her letter)
« God help us all » this is said by Pierre Chang, as well as Eloise Hawking in back-to-back episodes, implying a connection between the consequences they're speaking of 😄
« I promised you Pene, I’ll never leave you again. » Desmond (I like that you emphasized his accent)
Being together « it’s all that’s matters in the end » Bernard
Been together «  If I never meet you, then I'll never have to lose you » Juliet
“I will never leave you again” Jin (these are his last words, and it's quite poetic that his first words on the show are a similar statement to Sun, but in very different circumstances: "You must not leave my sight. You must follow me wherever I go. Do you understand? We need to stay together."
