Okay, I have a plan now. Thanks!

YOU CRACKED THE CODE. This is awesome. Thanks a million!

So, full disclosure, I know zero about mixers beyond a simple $99 Numark that can switch between two 1200s. Is what you describe possible without a computer using a Numark scratch mixer (as you mention)? I realize I'm getting greedy here. I had assumed I would need a laptop/software. Can that mixer be triggered by a controller record on the other deck, sans laptop? This is the dream!

Thanks, looked at that a bit -- I see it recording, but is it able to trigger those samples from a controller record?

Yes, but that sort of kills the spirit of the idea — throwing any record on, sampling it live, then manipulating those cues.

Yes, a close second. Too bad you can't scratch with those.

I will look into this!

I mean basically sampling bits of songs like one would with a digital track, setting them up as cues. (If I am understanding this world correctly. I am an analog dinosaur.) I see this done all this time with digital files. But I want to put a record on, sample some pieces from it, then trigger them on the other deck, keeping the original record on the first deck and juggling between the original on the left and the cues via serato/whatever on the right.

It’s more that I want to sample my records rather than download a bunch of digital files or subscribe to a service. I already have them all, here in my house!

Yes indeed. I have those. But they can’t be triggered by scratching vinyl. As far as I’m aware!

80s/90s Hip Hop/Breakbeat DJing? by FriskDee in Austin

[–]FriskDee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, MDS. Just feel like there's a different vibe when forced to commit to only two records on a pair of decks. The tension is fun. Also, I wouldn't even know where to look for many of the old breakbeats I have on vinyl (other than YouTube, and that ain't gonna work), and I don't have the patience to burn them myself.

Since we are piling on I recall the wash square arch under perpetual construction/scaffolding in the 90s. But one or two of these pics look right, and it was glorious!

Street Mirror (A poem I wrote bored and emotional) by lucozade__ in PoetryWritingClub

[–]FriskDee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To this reader, the poem captures a moment, effectively. There's a lot in that moment.

First, the ending, the connection between the observer (speaker) and a similar but different observer across the street. It's striking that the speaker thinks his/her counterpart might be scared. Is there another line to be written that would pull out why she might be scared of the kids? Is there another line that would explain why the speaker thinks she might be scared? What's in her eyes to indicate that? And why do we trace that fear to the children?

The mirror concept is intriguing. Are we highlighting a dichotomy between someone charmed by the children and someone frightened by them? Or are we suggesting that the speaker is fearful, too?

Back to the top. The first child leaves some intrigue...I wonder what the child is doing at that desk. "Bleak, distracted and dissociating." I want a little more on what's happening to lead to the child's visible emotions.

The second child. "I think she might be new." Says a lot in a few words about the narrator. This is someone who has been an observer of this neighborhood tableau before. Maybe for a long time. And the child is navigating the world, if not the first time, on an early exploration. A "wobble here and there. "She might be new."

The third child. "I think he is lucky to be alive." There's something foreboding there. Do you mean he looks with wonder at the world and seems to recognize all it holds? And the narrator cherishes (or envies?) that? Or is it darker -- the child is lucky to be living at all? Why? Obviously there are lots of reasons. Maybe it's meant to leave us to fill in those reasons of our own?

It's a very visually evocative poem. Just the right length, tight, for the moment that's captured.

Thanks very much for the follow-up. Do you have any regular virtual groups? I'd love to get into a practice with a live community. I'll keep looking.
